Trait narcissism is characterized by significant heterogeneity across individuals. Despite advances in the conceptualization of narcissism, including the increasing recognition that narcissism is a multidimensional construct, the sources of this heterogeneity remain poorly understood. Here, we used a neural trait approach to help better understand "how," and shed light on "why," individuals vary in facets of trait narcissism. Participants (N = 58) first completed personality measures, including the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI), and then in a second session sat passively while resti

This review documents two themes of emphasis found in phenotypic descriptions of pathological narcissism across clinical theory, social/personality psychology, and psychiatric diagnosis. Clinical theories of narcissism spanning 35 years consistently describe variations in the expression of pathological narcissism that emphasize either grandiosity or vulnerable affects and self-states. Recent research in social/personality psychology examining the structure of narcissistic personality traits consistently finds two broad factors representing Grandiosity-Exhibitionism and Vulnerability-Sensitivit

OBJECTIVES: Based on previous research, it has been proposed that the development of depressive disorders is related to altered functioning of the serotonergic systems as well as the personality style, including narcissism. However, it is unclear to date how personality style, especially narcissism, depressive disorders and serotonergic activity are related.
METHODS: We included 74 patients with a depressive disorder (DP) and 74 healthy controls (HC) in the study. All participants completed the Personality Style and Disorder Inventory (PSDI) and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI II). Moreove

Narcissists are prone to risky decision-making, but why? This study tested-via behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) measures-two accounts: deficiencies in error monitoring and deficiencies in action updating. High and low narcissists were engaged in a monetary gambling task by choosing between a high-risk and a low-risk option while the electroencephalogram (EEG) was being recorded. Two ERP components relevant to outcome evaluation-feedback-related negativity (FRN) and P3-were analyzed, with the FRN serving as an index of error monitoring and the P3 as an index of action updating. Narcissism is one of the oldest personality constructs, and yet debates about its definition and structure have been a topic of intense debate over the past decade. Recent independent reviews of the literature have proposed conceptually identical triarchic structural models of individual differences in pathological narcissism. In each model entitlement serves as the core of the construct, and its expression is moderated by basic personality/temperament to manifest in exhibitionism or vulnerability. However, the clinical observation that individuals high in pathological narcissism vacillate bet

In this article, we test psychodynamic assumptions about envy and narcissism by examining malicious envy in the context of narcissistic grandiosity and vulnerability. In Study 1, students (N = 192) and community adults (N = 161) completed trait measures of narcissism, envy, and schadenfreude. In Study 2 (N = 121), participants relived an episode of envy, and cognitive-affective components of envy were examined in the context of both self- and informant reports of their envy and narcissism. In Study 3 (N = 69), narcissism was linked to reports of envy covertly induced in the laboratory. Vulnera

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the associations between eating pathology and narcissism in an eating-disordered group. Narcissism was conceptualized in terms of both its core element (entitlement, grandiosity) and the narcissistic defenses that are used to maintain self-esteem.
METHOD: Seventy non-clinical and 84 eating-disordered patients completed a measure of the different elements of narcissism, and a standardized measure of eating pathology.
RESULTS: The eating-disordered group scored higher than the non-clinical women on the measures of core narcissism and of the narcissistically abuse

Northern Ontario is the largest and least populated region of the Canadian province of Ontario. Like other rural, remote, and northern regions, Northern Ontario has been disproportionately impacted by the opioid crisis, with an opioid-related mortality rate more than twice that of the province as a whole. Social exclusion is a predictor of drug use, and the urban core-hinterland periphery socioeconomic relationship that undergirds Northern Ontario's economy results in social degradation and economic marginalization. Along with deindustrialization and increased employment precarity, lack of acc

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) has a high prevalence (20%-40%) in patients obtaining cosmetic surgeries and interventions, compared with around 4% to 8% in the general population. At its core, narcissistic pathology is the result of poor identity formation (sense of self) and poor self-esteem. Patients with NPD tend to use idealization and devaluation in their interactions with others, have difficulty with empathy, and are highly sensitive to criticism or perceived threat to self. As a result, they tend to evoke a variety of emotional reactions in the physicians who treat them. Recogn

OBJECTIVE: Increasing attention has been paid to the distinction between the dimensions of narcissistic grandiosity and vulnerability. We examine the degree to which basic traits underlie vulnerable narcissism, with a particular emphasis on the importance of Neuroticism and Agreeableness.
METHOD: Across four samples (undergraduate, online community, clinical-community), we conduct dominance analyses to partition the variance predicted in vulnerable narcissism by the Five-Factor Model personality domains, as well as compare the empirical profiles generated by vulnerable narcissism and Neurotic

This article introduces a special issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychology: In Session focused on the conceptualization and treatment of narcissism. Obscured by an ongoing debate about how best to define pathological narcissism, clinicians have often lost sight of the fact that narcissistic investment in the self is a normal developmental trend that can be disturbed to varying degrees by environmental stresses and failures of nurturing. Using case presentations, contributing authors demonstrate the following: the importance of understanding the closely interrelated grandiosity and vulnerabi

Many have posited that narcissistic individuals are sensitive to insults and prone to react to such criticism with anger and hostility. Given that such anger is provoked by criticism from others, it was hypothesized that narcissistic traits which relate to perceived position of authority or superiority and an inflated sense of entitlement would make it easier for someone to perceive a remark as threatening and feel angry. It was hypothesized that these aspects of narcissism, as measured by the subscales of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory by Raskin and Hall would correlate differentially

Narcissism can be conceived hierarchically at three levels: as a global construct (Level 1), as two dimensions (Level 2; grandiosity and vulnerability), and as a trifurcated model with three underlying dimensions: interpersonal antagonism, narcissistic neuroticism, and agentic extraversion (Level 3). The aim of the study was to examine how narcissism dimensions across the three levels differ in their associations with various forms of interpersonal functioning. The authors assessed multiple domains of interpersonal functioning using data collected from 447 MTurk workers, 606 students, and 365

Despite putative gender differences in the expression of narcissism, prominent theories have virtually dismissed the role of females in the development and manifestation of narcissism. The contention that narcissism is a pathology of the self that may partly differ in males and females is further evident in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The DSM-5 reports that up to 75% of those diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) are men. Such figures suggest that the representation of narcissism as codified in the DSM-5 may only be marginally applicable

The Trifurcated Model of Narcissism (TriMN) has received growing attention in the scientific study of narcissistic traits, as it provides a clear and clinically useful distinction of the three core elements of narcissistic personalities: agentic extraversion (AE), narcissistic antagonism (NA), and narcissistic neuroticism (NN). So far, the Five-Factor Narcissism Inventory (FFNI) and its abbreviations-for example, the recently introduced brief form (FFNI-BF)-represent the only measures that allow for a direct and simultaneous assessment of these traits. Distinct parts of the TriMN have also bee

Personality characteristics and situational factors are known to influence performance on behavioral decision making tasks; however, variability exists in the relationship between narcissism and decision making. In addition, recent research suggests that the presence of acute pain can negatively affect decisions, and even the threat of pain can also cause changes in decision making. Narcissists are known to experience social pain differently than non-narcissists, but relatively little is known about how physical pain is experienced. The present study examined the influence of both pain and nar

Problem drinking and gambling are addictive behaviours experienced by young adults and commonly occur with narcissism. Research has acknowledged two distinct forms of narcissism: grandiose and vulnerable. There has been work that has examined the relationship between grandiose and vulnerable narcissism and addictive behaviours, but it has been limited, particularly with vulnerable narcissism. Evidence suggests vulnerable narcissism, but not grandiose narcissism, is associated with greater negative affect. Accordingly, shame, a potent social emotion could be a mediator in the narcissism-addicti

We review the literature on the relation between narcissism and consumer behavior. Consumer behavior is sometimes guided by self-related motives (e.g., self-enhancement) rather than by rational economic considerations. Narcissism is a case in point. This personality trait reflects a self-centered, self-aggrandizing, dominant, and manipulative orientation. Narcissists are characterized by exhibitionism and vanity, and they see themselves as superior and entitled. To validate their grandiose self-image, narcissists purchase high-prestige products (i.e., luxurious, exclusive, flashy), show greate
