Integrative Medicine for Cancer-Related Pain: A Narrative Review.

Cancer-related pain (C-RP) is a prevalent and debilitating concern among patients with cancer, with conventional treatments limited in their ability to provide adequate relief, and by the adverse effects associated with their use. Complementary and integrative medicine (CIM) modalities have been shown to be potentially effective and safe for the treatment of pain and related symptoms, when used in conjunction with conventional medications and under medical supervision. An increasing number of oncology centers provide CIM within their conventional supportive and palliative care service, in an "

The Impact of the Aging Workforce on Occupational Medicine: A Narrative Review.

Population aging is changing the workforce and the practice of occupational medicine. Older workers bring experience, judgment, and knowledge. But they may also have wider differences in physical reserve, sensory function, sleep tolerance, chronic disease, and recovery after illness or injury. This review examines the effects of these changes on work ability, fitness-for-work assessment, injury prevention, health surveillance, sickness absence, return to work, and workplace accommodation. We conducted a narrative review of PubMed-indexed, English-language human studies from database inception

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Narrative Medicine Intervention in a Burn Center.

Psychosocialsequelae from burn injuries may be significant for both patients and caregivers, affecting functional recovery. Narrative medicine, one aspect of medical humanities, uses guided reading, discussion, and writing to allow persons to feel seen and heard, and to reflect and express themselves. This low-cost, non-pharmacological intervention may benefit persons recovering from a burn injury, as well as caregivers. A prospective, uncontrolled, feasibility and acceptability trial was carried out in a 12-bed regional burn center with 6 patients and 6 caregivers (not dyadic pairs). Feasibil

Managing sepsis in the era of precision medicine: a narrative review.

For decades, the management of sepsis has adopted protocolized care bundles. However, the plateau in global survival rates suggests that the "one-size-fits-all" paradigm exemplified by early goal-directed therapy has reached its limits. The physiological and biological heterogeneity of sepsis necessitates a fundamental shift toward precision medicine. This review examines the transition from empirical resuscitation to individualized care across four critical domains. First, fluid strategy is evolving from aggressive loading to dynamic stewardship. Current evidence favors balanced crystalloids

Parent-authored memoirs: Lessons in the practice of narrative medicine.

Healthcare professionals, including practitioners of medical genetics and genetic counseling, have much to learn about the experiences of parents who are raising and caring for a child with a rare disease or developmental disability. Knowledge and understanding of the challenges in the care of a child with conditions such as Down syndrome and Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome are at the core of the practice of genetic medicine. Insights into this experience can come from active listening to stories and from deep reading of memoirs and narratives authored by parents of children having these challenges.

Narrative Medicine: Crossing Health Humanities Cultures in China, France, and Italy.

Narrative medicine and narrative-based medicine emerged at the turn of the millennium and have since matured into rigorous disciplines of the health humanities. Originating at King's College London and Columbia University in New York, these practices examined the healthcare implications of the narrativist turn occurring in the early 1990s in response to theory upheavals of the late twentieth century. Narrative medicine joins health humanities to bring humanities, the arts, and qualitative social sciences to bear on the narrative, rhetorical, linguistic, metaphorical, and relational dimensions
