Nasal carriage of 200 patients with nasal bone fracture in Korea.

BACKGROUND: Pathogens in the nasal cavity during nasal surgery could lead to a systemic infectious condition, such as bacteremia, nosocomial infection, or toxic shock syndrome. However, there is no research about the prevalence of nasal carriage in patients with nasal bone fracture. METHODS: This was a prospective, double-blind, randomized study about the rate of nasal carriage in 200 patients with nasal bone fracture in Korea. Nasal secretions were taken from both the middle nasal meatus and colonized. All analyses were carried out using SPSS software. RESULTS: Pathogens were identified in

Trend analysis of nasal bone fracture.

BACKGROUND: Nasal bone fractures occur frequently because the nasal bone is located at the forefront of the face. The goal of this study was to examine the cause, change in severity, change in incidence, and demographics of nasal bone fracture according to today's lifestyle. METHODS: A total of 2,092 patients diagnosed as having nasal bone fractures at our department between 2002 and 2017 were included in this study. We retrospectively examined patients' medical records to extract information regarding age, sex, cause of injury, combined facial bone fractures, and related injuries such as sku

Olfactory Dysfunction in Nasal Bone Fracture.

BACKGROUND: All nasal bone fractures have the potential for worsening of olfactory function. However, few studies have studied the olfactory outcomes following reduction of nasal bone fractures. This study evaluates posttraumatic olfactory dysfunction in patients with nasal bone fracture before and after closed reduction. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted for all patients presenting with nasal bone fracture (n=97). Each patient consenting to the study underwent the Korean version of Sniffin' Sticks test (KVSS II) before operation and at 6 month after closed reduction. The nasal fract

Current updates in nasal bone reshaping.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent studies on nasal osseocartilaginous anatomy, osteotomy techniques and contemporary methods of nasal bone reshaping carried out under direct vision. RECENT FINDINGS: Current cadaver studies on osseocartilaginous vault anatomy, osteotomy techniques provide valuable information that can reduce outcome variability and increase reliability of osteotomies. Nevertheless, osteotomes have limitations and contemporary approaches - namely, piezoelectric instrumentations, osteoectomy, and osteotomy carried out under direct vision - can provide valuable solutions to cer

Convex bone deformity after closed reduction of nasal bone fracture.

BACKGROUND: Nasal fracture is the most common type of facial fracture treated by plastic surgeons. Here, we clarify the postoperative deformities that frequently remain after closed reduction of fresh nasal bone fracture by three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT). METHODS: Hundred consecutive cases of fresh nasal bone fracture in patients treated between May 2010 and January 2016 were examined. After closed reduction, the overall appearance of the arch formed by the nasal bone and maxillary process was evaluated as 'Excellent', 'Good' or 'Fair'. Patients were also asked about their over

Postoperative effects of anterior nasal spine bone harvesting on overall nasal shape.

AIM: Bone harvesting from the anterior nasal spine (ANS) is frequently used to correct peri-implant bone defects, particularly during implant placement in the anterior maxilla. However, many clinicians are concerned about the postoperative effect of removing the ANS on the nasal outline, as the ANS is integral to supporting the nose. This study aimed to describe the technique of ANS bone grafting and to investigate postoperative effects of bone harvesting from the ANS on the overall nasal shape. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen patients with single maxillary first incisal rehabilitation using de

The tolerance of the nasal bone to blunt impact.

The nasal bone is among the most frequently broken facial bone due to all types of trauma and is the most frequently fractured facial bone due to motor vehicle collisions. This study reports the results of anterior-posterior impacts performed on male cadavers using a free-falling impactor with a flat impacting surface. The force at fracture onset was determined using an acoustic emission sensor. These non-censored data were utilized in parametric and non-parametric techniques to determine a relationship between applied force and fracture risk. Based on these analyses a 50% risk of fracture cor

Hemangioma of the nasal bone: a case report.

Hemangiomas of the bone account for 0.7% of all bone tumors. The craniofacial region is a rare site of involvement, with the mandible, zygoma, and maxilla being the most frequently affected areas. Hemangioma of the nasal bone is very rare. A 60-year-old male patient presented with complaints of difficult breathing through the nasal airway and a slowly growing hard mass at the nasion with a history of 10 years. Computed tomography demonstrated a round mass involving the left nasal bone with submucosal extension. An en bloc excision of the mass and its extension was performed. Histopathological

Lateral nasal wall abscess following manipulation of fractured nasal bones.

Nasal fracture accounts for over 50% of facial fractures and is a frequent presentation to ear, nose and throat emergency clinics. Optimal management of nasal injuries with deformity is by manipulation under anaesthetic and should be offered when appropriate. A healthy 27-year-old woman presented with a lateral nasal wall mass with purulent discharge 1 month following manipulation. CT imaging revealed a mass arising from fragments of the nasal bone, consistent with an abscess. Bone fragments and purulent material were initially debrided, with a subsequent formal excision of a persistent granul

Cosmetic rhinoseptoplasty in acute nasal bone fracture.

OBJECTIVE: Traditionally, rhinoseptoplasty for nasal bone fracture is only considered after an unsatisfactory outcome from initial closed reduction. However, better surgical outcomes may be achieved if rhinoseptoplasty is performed at the same time as the nasal bone fracture reduction. This study investigated the surgical outcomes of patients who underwent rhinoseptoplasty concomitantly with nasal bone fracture reduction according to their computed tomography image-based nasal bone fracture classifications. STUDY DESIGN: Case series with chart review. SETTING: Academic tertiary care medical

Nasal bone in prenatal trisomy 21 screening.

UNLABELLED: The definitive diagnosis of fetal chromosomal abnormalities is only accomplished through tests that sample fetal tissue. These procedures--amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling and cordocentesis--are invasive and carry with them the risks of bleeding, rupture of membranes, and even pregnancy loss. Current recommendations from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists state that all women should be offered screening, regardless of maternal age. However, the exact screening test to apply to pregnant women is still a matter of debate. The goal of any screening method

Foreign body mimicking a nasal bone fracture.

Nasal foreign bodies are common in young children and are typically the result of intranasal placement by the child. The authors report a case of an extranasal foreign body in an adult, which presented as a nasal fracture following trauma to the nose. This uncommon presentation, previously unreported in the literature, highlights the importance of careful history taking in cases of nasal trauma and of thorough wound exploration if any penetrative injury is found.

Septal fracture in simple nasal bone fracture.

Nasal bone fractures are the most common type of facial fractures. Previous studies have shown that most nasal fractures involve the septum, which can provide an obstacle to the successful reduction of nasal bone fractures. In particular, septal fractures in combination with simple nasal bone fractures are usually unrecognized and untreated at the time of injury. Furthermore, systemized treatment protocols and diagnostic tools for septal fractures in the case of simple nasal bone fracture have not previously been presented. In this study, the clinical findings of septal fractures in cases of s
