Use of nasal mucosa graft in tympanoplasty.

INTRODUCTION: Tympanoplasty techniques with different types of graft have been used to close tympanic perforations since the 19th century. Tragal cartilage and temporalis fascia are the most frequently used types of graft. They lead to similar functional and morphological results in most cases. Although little published evidence is present, nasal mucosa has also been shown to be a good alternative graft. OBJECTIVE: Surgical and audiological outcomes at the six-month follow-up in type I tympanoplasty using nasal mucosa and temporalis fascia grafts were analyzed. METHODS: A total of 40 candida

Prion infection of oral and nasal mucosa.

Centrifugal spread of the prion agent to peripheral tissues is postulated to occur by axonal transport along nerve fibers. This study investigated the distribution of the pathological isoform of the protein (PrP(Sc)) in the tongues and nasal cavities of hamsters following intracerebral inoculation of the HY strain of the transmissible mink encephalopathy (TME) agent. We report that PrP(Sc) deposition was found in the lamina propria, taste buds, and stratified squamous epithelium of fungiform papillae in the tongue, as well as in skeletal muscle cells. Using laser scanning confocal microscopy,

[Nasal mucosa in patients with diabetes mellitus].

Diabetes mellitus is the most common endocrinologic disease all over the world. 150 million people suffer from this disease, in Poland about 2 million. The disease on the basis of the onset and pathophysiology may be divided into type I and type II. Pathophysiologic changes include diabetic microangiopathy, macroangiopathy and neuropathy. The most common presentations in head and neck are otitis externa, hypoacusis, vertigo, disequilibrium, xerostomia, dysphagia, fungal and recurrent infections. The changes in nasal mucosa are not very well known. Only few papers concerned the problem. The mai

Complement activation in the nasal mucosa following nasal ragweed-allergen challenge.

The aim of this study was to explore complement activation in the nasal lavage following a nasal ragweed-allergen challenge. The study was carried out with 15 adolescents who were allergic to ragweed and with six non-allergic healthy volunteers. Following the baseline measurement after the symptoms were registered, subjects were given increasing doses of ragweed allergen. Lavage fluid was collected and tested for a complement-activation product (C3bBbP). The allergic patients responded to allergen provocation with an increase in C3bBbP formation compared to the initial lavage (p = 0.001). The

Cystic fibrosis: ultrastructural changes of nasal mucosa.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited multisystemic disorder that results in a generalized dysfunction of exocrine glands. Besides chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, chronic sinusitis, nasal polyposis and hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates with nasal airway obstruction are typical signs. Tissue samples of the inferior turbinates and nasal polyps were taken during nasal surgery from 21 children, ranging from 3 to 16 years of age. Light- and electron microscopical examination were carried out. Furthermore, specimens of nasal mucosa of patients without chronic inflammation as controls and

[hBD-2 gene expression in nasal mucosa].

BACKGROUND: Chronic sinusitis is one of the frequent inflammatory diseases and has a complex pathogenesis. A substantial factor seems to be recurrent bacterial infections. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) frequently can be found in nasal smears of patients with persistent sinus symptoms after sinus surgery. Lately a new antimicrobial peptide of epithelial origin, human Beta-Defensin-2 (hBD-2), with a strong antibacterial effect against PA could be identified within lesional skin scales of patients suffering psoriasis. Aim of this study was to investigate hBD-2-mRNA expression in nasal cells and tis

Dehydration affects drug transport over nasal mucosa.

Formulations for nasal drug delivery often rely on water sorption to adhere to the mucosa, which also causes a higher water gradient over the tissue and subsequent dehydration. The primary aim of this study was therefore to evaluate mucosal response to dehydration and resolve the hypothesis that mucoadhesion achieved through water sorption could also be a constraint for drug absorption via the nasal route. The effect of altering water activity of the vehicle on Xylometazoline HCl and 51Cr-EDTA uptake was studied separately ex vivo using flow through diffusion cells and excised porcine mucosa.

The human respiratory nasal mucosa in nasal syphilis. An ultra-microscopic study.

The fine structure of the human tertiary syphilitic nasal mucosa was studied in 5 patients. The epithelium showed variations in thickness, loss of cilia, irregular cell contours, widened intercellular spaces, rare goblet cells. The seromucinous glands were in three forms. The arterioles and capillaries varied in relation to the pathology of the surrounding tissue. The venules were least affected. The stroma was infiltrated by macrophages, plasma cells with some areas having excessive fibrosis and others partially necrotic. These findings were correlated to the histochemical reactions.
