OBJECTIVE: Currently, there is an intensive discussion about enhancing and expanding outpatient rhinosurgical procedures. Many questions about how to stratify into out- and inpatient procedures are still not sufficiently clarified. Particularly, the use of nasal packing materials is not adequately discussed.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a Germany-wide survey among otorhinolaryngologists regarding the use of nasal packing materials in sinonasal surgery. Additionally, we asked for any complication in relation to nasal packing.
RESULTS: In 85,6% nasal packing was used for septal and turbi

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in medicine and expenditures associated in treatment of nasal airway obstruction, 25-50% of patients undergoing nasal surgeries complain of persistent obstructive symptoms. Our objective is to develop a "stepwise virtual surgery" method that optimizes surgical outcomes for treatment of nasal airway obstruction.
METHODS: Pre-surgery radiographic images of two subjects with nasal airway obstruction were imported into Mimics imaging software package for three-dimension reconstruction of the airway. A hierarchical stepwise approach was used to create seven virtual sur

Although most surgical procedures of the head are technically easier to perform with the horse under general anesthesia, other factors will influence whether a surgical procedure is performed with the horse standing or recumbent under the influence of general anesthesia. The accessibility of the head lends itself to many standing surgical procedures if the proper combination of analgesia and physical and chemical restraint is used. Traumatic injuries of the head (lacerations, facial bone fractures, and oral fractures) may involve vital structures, and a thorough examination is indicated. Failu

In recent years, the research hotspot of rhinology is looking forward to effective method for changing the anatomical structure of nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. And it will build up the optimal relationship between airflow field and biological effects in rhinology surgency. Now in precise medical treatment, we are eager to find a more reasonable and optimized surgical method before operation, with the help of information technology and big data science. It will not only achieve the greatest biological effect, but also maximize the protection of the lateral wall of the nasal cavity, in orde

OBJECTIVE: Partial resection of the caudal part of the inferior turbinate including the head is still performed in rhinosurgery ("stripe conchotomy"). However, extensive resections of the turbinate affect nasal airflow and intranasal conditioning. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of partial resection of the inferior turbinate including its head on intranasal air flow as well as warming and humidification of the inspired air by means of computational fluid dynamics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A bilateral, realistic nasal model was created based on the CT scan of a patient. A unila

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the acquisition of surgical skills by otolaryngology residents and established the minimum number of dissections of a lamb's model to be performed before practicing on human patients.
METHODS: Nineteen second-year otolaryngology residents performed ten dissections each, five on each nasal cavity, always practicing the same three surgical procedures on the lamb model. Each student's training lasted 2-months, and the entire training intervention lasted 4-years, over four generations of residents. All dissections were recorded and were selected at random for examination b

The twisted nose is a challenging procedure in rhinoplasty. The goal of surgery is to realign the nasal skeleton to create symmetry in the face and restore nasal patency. Key in the surgical procedure is that all structures of the nasal skeleton be dissected free, mobilized, repositioned, and stabilized. Important surgical steps are intermediate osteotomies on the contralateral side of the deviation for the upper nasal third; for the mid nasal third, a unilateral spreader graft or splint on the nondeviated side, and for the lower nasal third, fixation of the caudal septum to the anterior nasal

<p>Background: Surgical interventions for nasal obstruction represent a significant proportion of everyday rhinology practice. Failure to improve patients' symptoms may be due to incomplete assessment of co-morbidities, low sensitivity for nasal airflow, and inadequate therapeutic approaches. This narrative review summarizes the evidence on studies assessing the results of nasal obstruction surgery in relation to trigeminal function measurements. Focus was given to specific procedures such as septoplasty, endoscopic sinus surgery, and surgery of inferior turbinates. Summary: Current literature

Patients who underwent cleft lip surgery in childhood may develop nasal malformation later in life. Various procedures have been described to correct these malformations. This study aims to describe our surgical approach and assess the morphometric outcomes of secondary cleft-lip rhinoplasty performed at the plastic surgery department in Marseille between 2002 and 2022. We conducted an analysis of surgical procedures and nasal morphometrics results by measuring pre- and postoperative images. Both surgical procedures and nasal morphometric analyses have been performed. This study included 43 pa

Background: Oro-nasal fistula formation remains one of the most common complications following primary palatoplasty, while the influence of surgical technique on fistula incidence and characteristics remains controversial. This study aimed to compare the occurrence and features of oro-nasal fistulas after two primary palatal repair techniques. Methods: A retrospective comparative analysis was conducted in patients undergoing one-stage primary palatoplasty using either closed intravelar palatoplasty or a modified Veau-Wardill-Kilner pushback technique. Oro-nasal fistulas were evaluated accordin

INTRODUCTION: Antrochoanal polyp is a benign tumor of the maxillary sinus mucosa passing through the sinus ostium into the nasal cavity. Nasal obstruction is the most common symptom in all patients.
CASE REPORT: The authors present a case of a 28-year old female who was admitted to hospital with breathing difficulty, unilateral nasal secretion, headache and deformity of the nasal pyramid. Computerized tomography examination of the nose and paranasal sinuses indicated a possibility of giant antrochoanal polyp. The antrochoanal polyp was extirpated completely using forceps, under general endotr

BACKGROUND: Inferior turbinate hypertrophy is one of the leading causes of chronic nasal obstruction and represents a frequent challenge in nasal surgical practice. Surgical management of this condition should aim not only to improve airflow but also to preserve nasal physiological function and minimize the risk of iatrogenic complications, particularly empty nose syndrome-an entity that can significantly impair patients' quality of life. Although traditionally addressed within otolaryngology, turbinate management is highly relevant in plastic surgery, particularly in rhinoplasty and septal pr
