INTRODUCTION: Although there are some studies regarding the clinical characteristics and outcome of nasopharyngeal tumors, one such study from Iran has not been reported to date. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical features, treatment, and consequences of nasopharyngeal lesions.
METHODS: In this cross sectional study, we conducted a retrospective review of patients who were diagnosed with nasopharyngeal pathologies and treated at Shahid Sadoughi Hospital and Shahid Ramazanzadeh Radiotherapy Center in Yazd, Iran, over a period of 10 years (from 2005 to 2014). The variables in the study w

It is now well established that human papillomavirus (HPV) is an important causative factor in a subgroup of head and neck cancer. In the head and neck, while HPV is strongly associated with squamous cell carcinoma arising in the oropharynx, there is a growing interest in HPV-associated neoplasms of non-oropharyngeal origin including those which arise within sinonasal and nasopharyngeal mucosa. This article reviews current literature on the association of HPV with Scheiderian papillomas, sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma, sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma, carcinoma with adenoid cystic-like

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) of the larynx is a rare neoplasm; with a review of the literature having disclosed only 34 documented cases. This neoplasm seems to behave in a fashion reminiscent of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. In contrast to nasopharyngeal carcinoma, most cases have not been associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The diagnosis often requires immunohistochemistry or electron microscopy for confirmation. We describe a case of this tumor involving the supraglottis. The patient was treated with supraglottic laryngectomy and bilateral modified neck dissection. The histopathologic

Nasopharyngeal chordoma is a rare type of malignant neoplasm that originates in the remnants of the notochord, a primitive tissue of embryonic origin preserved outside the axial skeleton. Approximately one-third of chordomas are located in the base of the skull, in the midline of the body. The slow growth rate of the tumor, which gradually fills the nasopharyngeal cavity, contributes to a delayed oncological diagnosis. Among its isolated and non-specific symptoms, the obstruction of the nasopharynx is dominant, thus, sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) may occur. The current study presents the ca

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal angiofibromas are typically considered benign vascular neoplasms, with descriptions of high-grade sarcomatous change found only in lesions with prior radiotherapy.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We describe the first reported case of high-grade malignant change in a nasopharyngeal angiofibroma naive to radiation. A 45-year-old man presented with left-sided nasal congestion and fullness and was found to have a left-sided nasopharyngeal mass with intracranial extension on CT scan. A biopsy of the mass revealed nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. The patient opted for MRI surveillance,

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma occurs with great frequency in Asia. It is an infiltrative tumor that often produces no symptoms early in its course. However, the proximity of the nasopharynx to the nasal cavity, eustachian tubes, masticatory muscles, and cranial nerves can allow extension of the lesion into these structures, resulting in numerous maxillofacial abnormalities. Computed tomography is effective in imaging the development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma in the nasopharynx as well as the subsequent spread of the neoplasm to adjacent areas. Four cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma are presented

RATIONALE: Primary nasopharyngeal papillary adenocarcinoma is a rare nasopharyngeal neoplasm with a good prognosis and a low propensity for regional recurrence. To date, only few cases of primary nasopharyngeal papillary adenocarcinoma have been reported in the literature.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 24-year-old female patient presented with intermittent hemoptysis and blood tinge nasal discharge.
DIAGNOSIS: An exophytic and pedunculated mass over the roof of the nasopharynx was found on nasopharyngoscope. Biopsy was done and the pathology confirmed well-differentiated primary nasopharyngeal papilla

This article gives an overview about the main nasopharyngeal pathologies and incidental findings, which a radiologist could be confronted with in daily practice. These include nasopharyngeal cysts, lymphoid hyperplasia, juvenile angiofibroma, carcinomas and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Typical radiological findings, possibilities for making a specific diagnosis, differential diagnosis and description of the spread of a neoplasm are the central points. Investigation techniques and clinical signs are briefly summarized.

OBJECTIVE: Epistaxis is extremely common in children. Although rare, the presence of an intranasal mass as a cause of bleeding should be ruled out in patients with recurrent or massive epistaxis. We present a patient whose recurrent nose-bleeding had been due to a nasopharyngeal mass.
METHODS: Case report with relevant literature review.
RESULTS: A 15-year-old girl with a history of sudden posterior nasal bleeding was diagnosed with thyroid-like low-grade nasopharyngeal papillary adenocarcinoma of the nasopharynx. A type II nasopharyngeal endoscopic resection was performed with an excellent

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal tissue hyperplasia is generally associated with adenoids in childhood. In adults, nasopharyngeal masses are occasionally found, but data on symptoms, clinical findings, and histologic results are limited.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 10-year retrospective study was conducted, analyzing data from adult patients who underwent nasopharyngeal biopsies. The study included information on case history, preoperative suspected diagnosis, and histology type. Statistical analysis was performed.
RESULTS: Two hundred and fifty-five patients were included, most of them complaining of

Twelve adult patients with serous otitis media have been seen in a five-year-period. Five of seven patients with nasopharyngeal neoplasm have died, and one case of polyarteritis nodosa has also terminated fatally. The remaining four patients had benign pathology in the nasopharynx, including one case of branchial cyst. A group of patients with chronic nasopharyngitis but without otological involvement is also reviewed.

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma (LEC) is an entity mostly frequent in the nasopharynx, which represents 40% of all neoplasms. The incidence's not exclusive of a geographic area; however, it has an endemic distribution in Southeast Asia and Eskimos. LEC is not exclusive of the nasopharynx, has also been reported in other anatomical areas, such as the sinonasal tract, nasolacrimal duct, oral cavity, oropharynx, salivary glands, thymus, hypopharynx, oesophagus, stomach, trachea, lung and others. Non-nasopharyngeal and nasopharyngeal LEC have the same microscopic features, but the nasopharyngeal is mor

Non-nasopharyngeal Lymphoepithelioma is a tumor of undifferentiated non-keratinizing cells enclosed in an lymphocytic stroma. The lymphoid tissue does not participate in the tumor process. Its tendency is to precociously spreading in the lymph nodes and viscera, but shows a good radiotherapeutic response. Unlike the nasopharyngeal lymphoepithelioma there is no etiological relationship with the Epstein-Barr virus, in spite of the histological similitudes, therefore the pathogenesis must be different in each. Discrimination between lymphoepithelioma and other neoplasms of the epithelial lineage

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the larynx, hypopharynx, and trachea is a rare neoplasm composed of large, poorly differentiated, nonkeratinized cells intermingled with small nonneoplastic lymphocytes and plasma cells. It is histologically similar to its more common counterpart occurring in the nasopharynx. In contrast to nasopharyngeal carcinoma, most cases have not been associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), although rare cases have been reported to be EBV-positive. The diagnosis often requires immunohistochemistry or electron microscopy for confirmation. The neoplasm seems to behave in a f

Nasopharyngeal involvement by Hodgkin's Disease is rare and may result in deafness, headaches, nasal obstructions and other symptoms. Compression of the pituitary gland with resultant panhypopituitarism has not been reported in nasopharyngeal Hodgkin's Disease. This paper documents a patient in whom Hodgkin's Disease of the nasopharynx eroded the bony sella turcica and compressed the pituitary gland causing anterior pituitary insufficiency. The patient presented with a skull x-ray and history compatible with a pituitary neoplasm. The diagnosis was established only by surgical exploration.

BACKGROUND: Warthin tumor is the second most common benign salivary gland neoplasm after pleomorphic adenoma. Warthin tumors occur almost exclusively in the parotid gland and periparotid lymph nodes, extraparotid localization is rare.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We describe a case of a patient presenting with a synchronous unilateral parotid gland and nasopharyngeal Warthin tumor.
CONCLUSION: We propose that, although this occurrence of a synchronous parotid gland and nasopharyngeal Warthin tumor may be coincidental, it is more likely to be an effect of a systemic factor.

We retrospectively studied biopsy specimens obtained from 16 patients who had carcinoma of the tonsil or nasopharynx. Polymerase chain reaction testing detected the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in 13 samples (81.3%)--six tonsillar and seven nasopharyngeal. Eleven of the 13 positive samples (84.6%) contained HPV subtype 31. We believe that this is the first report of the presence of HPV subtype 31 in these carcinomas. In addition to the significant association between tonsillar and nasopharyngeal cancer and HPV, our analysis of descriptive variables confirmed the association between t

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous human pathogen that usually maintains a harmonious relationship with its host. Rarely, this host-virus balance is perturbed, causing a diverse group of malignancies in both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients. In addition to its role in hematologic malignancies (Burkitt lymphoma, subsets of Hodgkin and T-cell lymphomas, posttransplant lymphomas), EBV has been implicated in both epithelial (undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma, a subset of gastric adenocarcinomas) and mesenchymal (EBV-associated smooth muscle tumor, inflammatory pseudotumo
