The nasopharyngeal microbiome.

Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is an autoimmune connective tissue disease characterised by an enhanced lymphoproliferative status, with a greater risk of hesitating in malignant lymphoma. The pathological hallmark of pSS is the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) arising in chronically inflamed tissues, mainly in salivary glands (SG), where inflammation, autoimmunity and lymphoproliferation coexist. In the microenvironment of MALT, the B lymphocyte activating factor (BAFF or BLys) is one of the main actors contributing to B cell survival and hyperactivity in pSS. Due to such a lymphopro

Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis.

Today, the opportunity to see tuberculosis is decreasing. Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is a rare entity, even in endemic tuberculosis areas. A case of nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is described. A 28-year-old woman presented with a sore throat. Irregular mucosal thickening was seen in the nasopharynx. Staining for acid-fast bacilli was positive (Gaffky 1), and the PCR test was positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis from pharyngeal mucus. Computed tomography showed mucosal thickening in the pharynx and old pulmonary tuberculosis in the right upper lobe. Multiple anti-tuberculosis drug therapy was

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal angiofibromas are uncommon neoplasms, which are histologically benign but locally invasive and destructive. They mostly affect the nose and nasopharynx, but may extend to the adjacent structures. The first choice of treatment is surgery. This paper presents our experience in the management of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 13 patients of nasopharyngeal angiofibroma attending the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Taipei Veterans General Hospital (VGH-TPE) from 1979 to 1999. Two patients recurred after surgery at other hospitals a

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma represents a morphologic spectrum of neoplasms localized to the nasopharynx and arising from nasopharyngeal epithelium. Nasopharyngeal carcinomas have rather unique clinical, epidemiologic, pathologic, and biologic features. The morphologic spectrum of nasopharyngeal carcinoma includes keratinizing, nonkeratinizing, and undifferentiated subtypes. The separation of these morphologic types is not an academic exercise, but has practical importance relative to differential diagnosis, management, and prognosis. A similar morphologic classification applies to carcinomas aris

Nasopharyngeal cancer.

The current standards of treatment for nasopharyngeal cancer include 1. In early disease (stage I and stage II), radiotherapy is the treatment of choice, and the chance for cure is usually high. 2. In locally advanced disease (stage III and stage IV) combination chemotherapy and radiation therapy is indicated. Further clinical trials are warranted, which may include the newer active chemotherapeutic agents. 3. Patients with distant metastases may be treated with chemotherapy alone or other palliative measures.

Nasopharyngeal actinomycosis.

Nasopharyngeal actinomycosis is a rarely encountered bacterial infection which usually occurs after nasal trauma or surgery. In some clinical cases, nasopharyngeal actinomycosis has appeared in patients without prior trauma, making diagnosis difficult. Here we present three such cases successfully treated with appropriate dosages of penicillin. One 16-year-old boy with no previous medical antecedents showed an important thickening of the posterior wall of the nasopharynx. A similar nasopharyngeal thickening was found in a 42-year-old woman exhibiting poor dental hygiene. In another 42-year-old

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a tumor arising from the epithelial cells that cover the surface and line the nasopharynx. The annual incidence of NPC in the UK is 0.3 per million at age 0-14 years, and 1 to 2 per million at age 15-19 years. Incidence is higher in the Chinese and Tunisian populations. Although rare, NPC accounts for about one third of childhood nasopharyngeal neoplasms. Three subtypes of NPC are recognized in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification: 1) squamous cell carcinoma, typically found in the older adult population; 2) non-keratinizing carcinoma; 3) undiffe

Nasopharyngeal amyloidosis.

PURPOSE: To discuss the presentation of localized amyloidosis affecting the nasopharynx and discuss the management options. Amyloidosis in the head and neck is a rare and benign condition that usually takes the form of localized amyloidosis. Because systemic amyloidosis markedly shortens life expectancy owing to its involvement with vital organs, rectal biopsy or fat aspiration of the anterior abdominal wall must be carried out to exclude systemic involvement. Localized amyloidosis in the head and neck can involve the orbit, sinuses, nasopharynx, oral cavity, salivary glands, and larynx. METH

Nasopharyngeal teratocarcinosarcoma.

Congenital germ cell tumors are uncommon. The most common site of origin is in the saccrococygeal region. Teratomas arising from the head and neck comprise a small proportion of this entity, and of these, nasopharyngeal lesions are rare. Also known by various synonyms such as hamartoma and hairy polyp, the teratoma is a well-recognized, and generally benign, clinical and histopathological entity. We present a case of a nasopharyngeal teratocarcinosarcoma associated with a cleft palate and the congenital replacement or absence of the ipsilateral Eustachian tube.

Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis.

Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis used to be a common disease in the upper aerodigestive system. Before 1920, 1.4 and 6.5 per cent of all adenoids and tonsils removed from asymptomatic patients were infected by tuberculosis. After the introduction of antituberculous chemotherapy and BCG vaccination, this disease was considered uncommon and sporadic cases were reported in the medical literature. Recently, tuberculosis has begun to increase again due to the high global HIV-infected rate and antituberculous drug resistance among these people. To describe and highlight the clinical features of this cond

Nasopharyngeal cryptococcosis.

Naturally occurring cryptococcosis in five cats, a dog and a koala is described. Involvement of the nasopharynx was documented in all patients, and nasopharyngeal mass lesions accounted for the major presenting complaints in four. Signs referable to nasopharyngeal disease included snoring, stertor, inspiratory dyspnoea and aerophagia. Diagnoses were made by caudal rhinoscopy using a retroverted flexible endoscope, vigorous orthograde flushing with saline, or at necropsy. Concurrent cryptococcal rhinitis was present in all cases, although involvement appeared limited to the caudal nasal cavity

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Based on this patient's history and the imaging studies, all the consultants agree that they are dealing with a juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. They agree that a biopsy is not necessary. However, angiography would be obtained by 2 physicians (Drs. Seid and Weber). When treating an extensive JNA, the consultants differ in their approaches. One favors a lateral infratemporal fossa approach (Dr. Gantz), but the others favor a combined approach (Drs. Seid and Weber). In this particular case, 2 experts favor resection (Drs. Gantz and Weber), but one would irradiate (Dr. Seid). There is also d

Longitudinal Response to Epipharyngeal Abrasive Therapy (EAT) in Chronic Nasopharyngitis With Outcome Redefinition and Stratified Analysis by Tissue Type and Baseline Severity.

Objective This study aimed to evaluate longitudinal changes in nasopharyngeal findings in patients undergoing epipharyngeal abrasive therapy (EAT) and to examine differences in treatment responsiveness according to macroscopic tissue type and baseline severity. In addition, outcome definitions were reconstructed using reproducible criteria based on EAT and bleeding scores, and factors associated with complete resolution were investigated. Methods A total of 546 patients undergoing EAT with nasopharyngeal evaluations from baseline up to 12 months were retrospectively analyzed. Inflammation and

Is acetaminophen as effective as an antihistamine-decongestant-acetaminophen combination in relieving symptoms of acute nasopharyngitis in children? A randomised, controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficiency of drugs, which include antihistaminic-decongestant-acetaminophen agents versus only acetaminophen in symptomatic treatment of acute nasopharyngitis in children. METHODS: This clinical, randomized, controlled, single blind drug efficacy comparison research was conducted in 148 patients with acute nasopharyngitis between ages 2 and 12 years. After randomization, Group-1 consisted of cases (n: 86), which used OTC drugs [acetaminophen+diphenhydramine+pseudoephedrin] and Group-2 consisted of cases (n: 62), which used only acetaminophen. After receiving nasa

A Rare Case of a Nasopharyngeal Pleomorphic Adenoma Mimicking a Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign pathology of the major salivary gland but rare in the minor salivary gland, especially in the nasopharynx, with only a few cases reported in the literature. A 76-year-old lady presented with bilateral nasal blockage for one year secondary to a nasopharyngeal mass. Histopathological examination reported it to be nasopharyngeal carcinoma, but the mass persisted after a course of chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy. Upon repeat biopsy, the mass was found to be a pleomorphic adenoma. The patient underwent nasopharyngectomy without complications and
