Natal and Neonatal Teeth: A Tertiary Care Experience.

BACKGROUND: Presence of teeth in a neonate is a rare occurrence due to the disturbance in the biological chronology of teeth. Although uncommon, these teeth if present are found to have several clinical implications. AIMS: This study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics and the treatment outcome of natal and neonatal teeth from a hospital setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was carried out by reviewing the hospital records of babies with natal or neonatal teeth in a tertiary hospital in Tamil Nadu between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2014. Babies with comp

Incidence of Natal Teeth in Sarlahi District of Nepal.

BACKGROUND: The presence of natal or neonatal teeth, which have been associated with environmental factors and hereditary syndromes, can have an impact on the psychosocial growth of children. METHODS: We aimed to estimate the incidence of natal tooth in Sarlahi district of Nepal.Live births from Sarlahi district in Nepal were assessed for natal teeth and other related factors. RESULTS: Among 28,695 live births between 2010 and 2017, we observed 7 cases of natal teeth accounting for an incidence rate of 2.44 per 10,000 (95% CI: 0.98 - 5.03). Out of 7 neonates with natal tooth, 4 were female a

Natal and neonatal teeth in relation to environmental toxicants.

Infants born to mothers heavily exposed to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) have earlier been reported to have increased prevalences of natal and neonatal teeth. Some tendency toward higher prevalence figures of natal and neonatal teeth can be seen in the literature in normal child populations during the last 40 y. We therefore decided to determine the present prevalence of these teeth in a Finnish population and to evaluate whether infants with natal and neonatal teeth are more exposed to PCBs, PCDFs, and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) than infants on aver

A study of natal teeth in Hong Kong Chinese.

The purpose of this study was to review cases of natal teeth in babies born between January 1984 and December 1988 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Hong Kong. There were 53678 births at the hospital during this period and 48 babies had natal teeth, a prevalence of 1:1118. The 48 babies had 72 natal teeth, all mandibular central incisors. The natal teeth in two babies were supernumerary teeth of a predeciduous dentition. Twenty nine natal teeth were extracted because they were hypermobile, three were extracted because they traumatized the ventral surface of the babies's tongue, and 16 were not e

Natal and neonatal teeth: early diagnosis and management.

The eruption of teeth in newborns is a rare disorder of the oral cavity and are called 'natal teeth' when they are present at birth or 'neonatal teeth' when they erupt within the first month of life. In most of these cases, they are prematurely erupted deciduous teeth or supernumerary teeth. Supportive management should be given, to facilitate child's feeding and to prevent further complications, such as aspiration as the tooth could be mobile. This study describes a series of cases that were reported to our department, involving teeth located in the mandibular anterior region either at birth

Natal and neonatal teeth: a review and case series.

Natal and neonatal teeth are a relatively rare but well-documented phenomenon, with the majority being prematurely erupted teeth of the normal primary dentition. Related complications include feeding issues, traumatic lingual ulceration and risk of aspiration. We present three clinical cases referred to the Paediatric Dentistry Department at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and their management. Treatment choice is based on individual assessment of each patient and options include monitoring, smoothing of the teeth or extraction. General dental practitioners should be able to diagnose

A survey of natal and neonatal teeth in newborn infants.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Since there is no comprehensive research of natal and neonatal teeth in Taiwan, careful investigation of natal or neonatal teeth is worthy of being studied. This retrospective study investigated the prevalence and clinical characteristics of natal or neonatal teeth in a hospital setting, and analyzed the possible relationships between investigated variables of the natal or neonatal teeth. METHODS: All of the 12,019 infants born at an assigned hospital between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2014 were investigated for natal or neonatal teeth. The identified individuals wer

Root Resurgence: An Unexpected Twist After Natal Teeth Extractions.

The presence of natal and neonatal teeth is a rare anomaly that can lead to various complications. This case report aims to highlight the potential delayed sequelae that can arise following the extraction of natal teeth. A boy aged three years and two months was referred for pain and an abscess on his lower anterior teeth. He had two natal teeth at birth, which were extracted on the second day of life due to excessive mobility and profound discomfort to the mother during breastfeeding. Surprisingly, he presented with pain in the same area where the teeth were extracted previously. Upon examina

Congenital hydrocephalus associated with congenital glaucoma and natal teeth.

We report the first described association of natal teeth with congenital hydrocephalus and congenital glaucoma, anterior segment dysgenesis with non-attachment of the retina. The clinical findings support a diagnosis of Walker-Warburg syndrome. The forkhead 7 transcription factor gene is proposed as a candidate gene for this syndrome.

Natal teeth and steatocystoma multiplex: a newly recognized syndrome.

A Chinese family is reported in which five generations have exhibited natal teeth and generalized multiple steatocystomas. This autosomal dominant condition is not similar to the two reported types of pachyonychia congenita, because nail lesions, palmoplantar keratosis and hyperhidrosis, follicular keratosis, and oral leukokeratosis were not observed. Therefore, it is suggested that this family exhibits a newly recognized syndrome.

Natal teeth in monozygotic twins with Van der Woude syndrome.

The second monozygotic twin pair concordant for Van der Woude syndrome is reported. Clinical manifestations of this autosomal dominant clefting syndrome included bilateral lower lip pits, cleft lip, and cleft palate. Both sibs were found to have a natal tooth. No other cases of Van der Woude syndrome with this feature have been described previously. It is uncertain whether the presence of a natal tooth in this instance represents a low-frequency association of this disorder. However, it appears more likely that its occurrence was incidental, since natal teeth have been reported before in twin

Natal and neonatal teeth in newborns and infants: a case-control study.

This study focused on the clinical characteristics and management of natal and neonatal teeth. It included an interview (questions about birth, parental health, pregnancy) as well as a clinical examination (appearance of teeth according to Hebling's classification and their mobility according to Miller's classification as well the assessment of soft tissues). Of the 52 children, natal teeth were found in 38 (73.8%) and neonatal ones in 14 (26.92%). All those teeth were mandibular central incisors. The crowns were normal (46.5%) and shell-shaped with enamel hypoplasia (20.9%). In 14 (26.9%) pat

Size, ultrastructure, and microhardness of natal teeth with agenesis of permanent successors.

OBJECTIVE: Natal and neonatal teeth may occur in conjunction with other oral anomalies, including anomalous development of succedaneous teeth. Our purpose was to examine the size, ultrastructure, and microhardness of two natal teeth without permanent successor germs, and compare them with the characteristics of normal primary teeth. DESIGN: The dimensions of two natal mandibular incisors extracted from a healthy 7-year-old child were measured with a digital sliding caliper. The crown dimensions of normal primary mandibular central incisors were established from dental casts of 102 children. S

Prevalence of natal/neonatal teeth in cleft lip and palate infants.

In the daily routine of the Hospital for Research and Rehabilitation of Cleft Lip and Palate, a high frequency of natal/neonatal teeth was observed. Therefore, this retrospective study was conducted to determine the prevalence of this anomaly in 692 patients with complete unilateral and 327 bilateral cleft lip and palate, who were less than 3 months old, without prior surgery, and registered at the Hospital from 1989 to 1994. A higher prevalence of such teeth was found in the complete bilateral cleft group (10.6%), than in the complete unilateral cleft group (2.02%). Both, however, were higher

Anencephalic infant with cleft palate and natal teeth: a case report.

Natal/neonatal teeth are very common in children with complete unilateral and bilateral cleft lip and palate. This article outlines a patient with intrauterine growth retardation, anencephaly, atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, two maxillary first natal incisor teeth, cleft palate, short neck, low-set ears, hypertelorism, retrognathia, and simian-line on the right hand. There is no conclusive evidence of a correlation between these findings and a known syndrome, suggesting that this case may be a hitherto undefined clinical combination with neonatal teeth.
