Occupation May Influence Risk of Cancer Mortality.

Based on data from the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics, researchers have found that occupation may influence the risk of cancer mortality among working adults, ages 20 to 64. Broadly speaking, men working in construction and extraction-for instance, roofers and mining machine operators-and women working in transportation had the highest mortality rates. Numerous factors beyond carcinogen exposure, such as job stressors leading to tobacco and alcohol use, inconsistent income, and limited health-care access could explain why.

Trends in Anthropometric Measures Among US Children 6 to 23 Months, 1976-2014.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The surveillance of children's growth reflects a population's nutritional status and risk for adverse outcomes. This study aimed to describe trends in length-for-age, weight-for-age, weight-for-length, and early childhood weight gain among US children aged 6 to 23 months. METHODS: We analyzed NHANES data from 1976-1980, 1988-1994, 1999-2002, 2003-2006, 2007-2010, and 2011-2014. We estimated z scores < -2 (low) and ≥+2 (high) in comparison with World Health Organization growth standards for each indicator. Weight gain (relative to sex-age-specific medians) from birth

Electronic fetal monitoring in relation to cesarean section delivery, for live births and stillbirths in the U.S., 1980.

In the 1980 National Natality and Fetal Mortality Surveys, information about fetal monitoring and type of delivery was obtained from hospitals for a sample of 9,941 live births and 6,386 fetal deaths of 28 weeks' gestation or more. Data in this analysis are weighted to provide national estimates of live births and late fetal deaths that occurred in U.S. hospitals during 1980. Electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) was used for 47.7 percent of live births; 27.2 percent were monitored by Doppler ultrasound only, 10.2 percent by scalp electrode only, 6.3 percent by Doppler ultrasound and scalp electro

Heavy Drinking Among U.S. Adults, 2018.

Heavy drinking is defined as the average consumption of more than 7 drinks per week for women and more than 14 drinks per week for men in the past year (1). Heavy drinking is associated with an increased risk of alcohol use disorders, suicide, interpersonal violence, traffic injuries, liver disease, certain cancers and infectious diseases, and adverse birth outcomes in pregnant women (1,2). This report describes adult alcohol use in the United States and presents the prevalence of heavy drinking by demographic characteristics, select mental health indicators, and select measures of health care

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in the United States, 1979-1994: using national mortality data to assess the possible occurrence of variant cases.

After a cluster of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) cases among unusually young patients was reported recently from the United Kingdom, we examined trends and the current incidence of CJD in the United States. We found that the age-adjusted CJD death rate in the United States is similar to published estimates of the crude incidence of CJD worldwide and has continued to be stable from 1979 through 1994. The number of CJD deaths in persons

National Survey of Family Growth: design, estimation, and inference.

The purpose of this report is to document the procedures used in the 1988 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) to select the sample, weight the data to produce national estimates, impute missing data, and estimate sampling errors. Therefore, this report necessarily contains a great deal of technical detail. For readers who do not need this level of detail, this summary briefly describes the procedures used. The National Survey of Family Growth is conducted every few years by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The pur

Epidemiology of hypertension in African American women.

To describe the epidemiology of hypertension in U.S. African American women and to highlight priority areas for future research, data from the nationwide surveys of the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics, from selected multicenter studies of the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, as well as from selected other population-based studies, were reviewed. In 1988 through 1991, an estimated 3 million African American women aged 18 and older had hypertension. Compared with that in U.S. whites, hypertension in black women is characterized by higher incidence, earlier onset, longer

Sex differences in peptic ulcer disease.

As recently as 1968, twice as many men as women had peptic ulcer disease in the United States. To determine the current pattern of ulcer disease frequency in men and women, we examined data from the National Center for Health Statistics. These data show that the male predominance in peptic ulcer disease has changed. The male to female ratio is now 1.0 for self-reported period prevalence, and 1.3 for hospitalization and mortality. Ulcer prevalence rates for women have increased whereas rates for men have decreased. For hospitalizations and mortality, the changing sex ratios are primarily due to

Suicide rates in relation to health care access in the United States: an ecological study.

OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that suicide rates in the United States are associated with indicators of access to health care services. METHOD: With an ecological study design, we compared age-adjusted suicide rates for men and women with demographic, socioeconomic, and other indices of access to health care, by state (N = 51, including the District of Columbia). The most recently available information from the National Statistics Reports at the U.S. Census Bureau, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Health Statistics, and the American Board of Medica

The 1980 National Natality Survey and National Fetal Mortality Survey--methods used and PHS agency participation.

Seven Public Health Service agencies collaborated with the National Center for Health Statistics in designing, funding, and analyzing the 1980 National Natality Survey (NNS) and 1980 National Fetal Mortality Survey (NFMS). The 1980 NNS-NFMS were nationally representative surveys based on samples of 9,941 live birth vital records and 6,386 fetal death vital records, which were weighted up to reflect U.S. estimates of 3,612,258 live births and 19,202 fetal deaths at 28 weeks' gestation or more. Four types of potential respondents who were associated with the sampled deliveries (married mothers,

Optimal birth weight percentile cut-offs in defining small- or large-for-gestational-age.

AIMS: It remains questionable what birth weight for gestational age percentile cut-offs should be used in defining clinically important poor or excessive foetal growth. We aimed to evaluate the optimal birth weight percentile cut-offs for defining small- or large-for-gestational-age (SGA or LGA). METHODS: In a birth cohort-based analysis of 17 979 120 non-malformation singleton live births, U.S. 1995-2001, we assessed the optimal birth weight percentile cut-offs for defining SGA and LGA. The 25th-75th percentile group served as the reference. Primary outcomes are the risk ratios (RR) of neona

Increased mortality in African Americans with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is a progressive disorder that usually culminates in right ventricular failure and death without treatment. OBJECTIVE: To assess mortality trends by race and gender for idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension in the United States from 1994-1998. METHODS: The U.S. National Center for Health Statistics data for the years 1994-1998 was reviewed for deaths in which the underlying cause was primary pulmonary hypertension (ICD-9 code 416.0), now known as IPAH. The age, gender, race and state of residence of the deceased were abstract
