Implementation of the National Health Service Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Program in England.

The National Health Service Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Program (NAAASP) has been introduced after research and analysis of data from a number of randomized trials and existing local screening programs in England that showed a reduction in aneurysm-related mortality when men aged ≥ 65 years were offered ultrasound screening. The evidence was assessed by the United Kingdom National Screening Committee against a set of internationally recognized criteria that confirmed that screening all men aged ≥ 65 years saves lives. The introduction of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening to men

Developing a national HIV/AIDS Prevention Program through state health departments.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) shaped the basic development and direction of the HIV/AIDS Prevention Program through technical support and financial assistance for State and local health departments and other organizations. Through this provision of support, CDC has responded to the course of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic by creating programs to preserve the safety of the blood supply, by developing counseling and testing centers, by promoting "safer sex," by promoting health education and risk reduction, by evaluating existing

Office spirometry for lung health assessment in adults: A consensus statement from the National Lung Health Education Program.

COPD is easily detected in its preclinical phase using spirometry, and successful smoking cessation (a cost-effective intervention) prevents further disease progression. This consensus statement recommends the widespread use of office spirometry by primary-care providers for patients >/= 45 years old who smoke cigarettes. Discussion of the spirometry results with current smokers should be accompanied by strong advice to quit smoking and referral to local smoking cessation resources. Spirometry also is recommended for patients with respiratory symptoms such as chronic cough, episodic wheezing,

Decarbonizing Health Care: Measuring the Carbon Footprint Impact of a National VA Telehealth Program.

Health care systems are increasingly recognizing the environmental harms generated by medical care and are seeking to reduce their carbon footprints. They can accomplish measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining high quality and even improving care by pursuing cobenefits - programs that simultaneously reduce environmental harm and benefit patients' health. The authors describe Advanced Comprehensive Diabetes Care (ACDC), an evidence-based telehealth program for diabetes patients in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) system that has concurrently improved pati

The Japanese national health screening and intervention program aimed at preventing worsening of the metabolic syndrome.

Similar to the healthcare systems in other industrialized countries, the Japanese healthcare system is facing the problem of increasing medical expenditure. In Japan, this situation may be primarily attributed to advanced technological developments, an aging population, and increasing patient demand. Japan also faces the problem of a declining youth population due to a low birth rate. Taken together, these problems present the healthcare system with a very difficult financial situation. Several reforms have been undertaken to contain medical expenditure, such as increasing employee copayment f

Fifty Years of the National Rabies Control Program in Brazil under the One Health Perspective.

In 1973, the National Rabies Program was created in Brazil through an agreement between the Ministry of Health and Agriculture. Since its beginning, it developed integrated action through access to free post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for people at risk, dog vaccination campaigns, a joint surveillance system, and awareness. This study aims to describe human rabies in Brazil under the One Health perspective in recent decades, including achievements in the control of dog-mediated cases and challenges in human cases transmitted by wild animals. This paper also explores possible drivers of human r

Modeling the Public Health Impact of Introducing 4CMenB Vaccination for Infants in the Brazilian National Immunization Program.

INTRODUCTION: Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) caused by meningococcal serogroup B (MenB) is a rare but serious illness with potentially life-threatening outcomes, particularly in infants. In Brazil, IMD is endemic, with the highest incidence in infants and most cases being due to MenB. The four-component MenB vaccine (4CMenB), with potential cross-protection against other meningococcal serogroups, is approved in Brazil for active immunization of individuals aged 2 months to 50 years. This modeling study assessed the public health impact on all age groups in Brazil of introducing routine v
