Drug-induced myopathies.

The most common drugs currently in use that may cause myopathies were reviewed using the Medline database (U.S. National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Maryland). Our review included results from epidemiologic and database surveys, clinical trials, and case reports. The clinical spectrum is wide, and presentations range from asymptomatic elevations in serum creatine phosphokinase levels to severe life-threatening rhabdomyolysis. Management of suspected drug-induced myopathy should include immediate discontinuation of the offending agent, as well as supportive care when needed. Earlier diagnosi

History of medicine: the metamorphosis of scientific medicine in the ever-present past.

Hippocrates (460-370 BCE), the father of medicine, developed principles for medical diagnosis and treatment together with a code of ethics. When the first Ptolemy ruled Egypt, he created a great library of 700,000 rolls at Alexandria, which became a repository for the works of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Hippocrates, and all the writings of the known world, but it was destroyed by a great fire. Galen of Pergamum (129-216), who lived 500 years after Hippocrates, was well educated and studied anatomy, surgery, drugs and Hippocratic medicine. His ideas influenced medical thinking for the next 150

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss: A Review.

The objective of this review is to present and evaluate the current views on sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is an otolaryngology emergency requiring immediate diagnosis and treatment. The etiology of the majority of cases is unknown. The etiology can be classified into various categories such as autoimmune diseases, infections, functional, metabolic disorders, vascular disorders, traumatic causes, due to toxins, and neurological disorders. We searched the U.S. National Library of Medicine's PubMed database using the terms "sudden S.N.H.L.," "virus and ssnh

Common Data Elements for Radiological Imaging of Patients with Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Proposal of a Multidisciplinary Research Group.

INTRODUCTION: Lack of homogeneous definitions for imaging data and consensus on their relevance in the setting of subarachnoid hemorrhage and unruptured intracranial aneurysms lead to a difficulty of data pooling and lack of robust data. The aim of the National Institute of Health/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysm (UIA) and Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH) Common Data Elements (CDE) Project was to standardize data elements to ultimately facilitate data pooling and establish a more robust data quality in future neurovascular research on UIA a

[Daylight therapy in intensive care units: a review].

BACKGROUND: As a neuropsychiatric syndrome, delirium worsens the prognosis of critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Risk factors such as sleep deprivation increase the incidence of delirium. Targeted light exposure influences the circadian rhythm, and daylight interventions can help to restore the natural daily rhythm. To date, a review of daylight therapy for German-speaking countries is lacking. OBJECTIVE: This work aims to provide an overview of the currently available evidence on the use of daylight therapy in critically ill patients on the ICU, with a medical focus on

Conversion coefficients based on the VIP-Man anatomical model and EGS4.

A new set of conversion coefficients from kerma free-in-air to absorbed dose and kerma free-in-air to "effective VIP-Man dose" has been calculated for external monoenergetic photon beams from 10 keV to 10 MeV using an image-based whole-body anatomical model. This model, called VIP-Man, was recently developed at Rensselaer from the high-resolution color images of the National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project. An EGS4-based Monte Carlo user code, named EGS4-VLSI, was developed to efficiently process the extremely large image data in VIP-Man. Irradiation conditions include anterior-pos

Detailed anatomy of the abdomen and pelvis of the visible human female.

We report on a virtual anatomical preparation of the abdomen and pelvis of the Visible Human Female (VHF) for laparoscopic surgery training. The detailed cross-sectional image data set from the U.S. National Library of Medicine was used as the basis to build an exemplary model of the female abdomen and pelvis. Segmentation software was developed to delineate organ outlines and more than 300 structures of interest, including organs, blood vessels, bones, muscles, and ligaments, have been segmented and three-dimensionally reconstructed. Analyzing the normal anatomy we found several variations an

The role of sex hormones in women with multiple sclerosis: From puberty to assisted reproductive techniques.

BACKGROUND: Multiple Sclerosis is a multifactorial chronic autoimmune disease, affecting predominantly females in the fertile age. Sex hormones changes during a woman's life, from puberty to menopause, including pregnancy and puerperium, may influence the onset and course of Multiple Sclerosis. The effect of estrogen levels on immune, clinical and radiological aspects of Multiple Sclerosis, also stimulated investigation on the effect of sexual hormones therapies, such as oral contraceptives and assisted reproductive technique, on the Multiple Sclerosis course. Publication bias in clinical trials in cataract therapies: implications for evidence-based decision-making.

Evidence-based decision-making is generally based on published evidence. Therefore, if the published evidence is biased, so will the decision-making. One possible bias is the "positive-results" publication bias. This study attempts to characterize this phenomenon in cataract therapy trials. Studies were categorized as "positive" if their results were congruent with the hypothesis and "negative" if not. Secondary outcomes included the influence of funding source and differences in publication metrics between "positive" and "negative" publications. The U.S. National Library of Medicine Clinical

Representation of Hispanic Patients in Clinical Trials for Respiratory Failure: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVES: Hispanic individuals comprise one-fifth of the U.S. population and Hispanic patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure (AHRF) experience higher odds of death compared with non-Hispanic White patients. Representation of Hispanic patients in clinical trials for respiratory failure is critical to address this inequity. We conducted a systematic review to examine the inclusion of Hispanic patients in randomized controlled trials for AHRF and assessed language as a potential barrier to enrollment. Automated Chest X-Ray Screening: Can Lung Region Symmetry Help Detect Pulmonary Abnormalities?

Our primary motivator is the need for screening HIV+ populations in resource-constrained regions for exposure to Tuberculosis, using posteroanterior chest radiographs (CXRs). The proposed method is motivated by the observation that radiological examinations routinely conduct bilateral comparisons of the lung field. In addition, the abnormal CXRs tend to exhibit changes in the lung shape, size, and content (textures), and in overall, reflection symmetry between them. We analyze the lung region symmetry using multi-scale shape features, and edge plus texture features. Shape features exploit loca

Chronic Post-Traumatic Aortic Isthmus Pseudoaneurysm After Conservative Management of Grade II Injury: Why Is Continuous Follow-Up Mandatory?

Background: Grade I-II blunt traumatic aortic injuries (BTAIs) are typically managed conservatively, but their long-term progression is poorly understood. Chronic pseudoaneurysms may develop years after the injury, often remaining asymptomatic and being incidentally diagnosed. Methods: Two cases of post-traumatic aortic pseudoaneurysms, detected 20 and 25 years following conservatively managed BTAIs, are reported. Additionally, a comprehensive review of all post-traumatic pseudoaneurysms reported in the MedLine (PubMed.gov, U.S. National Library of Medicine, National Institute of Health) datab
