Biomass Valorization through Catalytic Pyrolysis Using Metal-Impregnated Natural Zeolites: From Waste to Resources.

Catalytic biomass pyrolysis is one of the most promising routes for obtaining bio-sustainable products that replace petroleum derivatives. This study evaluates the production of aromatic compounds (benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX)) from the catalytic pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass (Pinus radiata (PR) and Eucalyptus globulus (EG)). Chilean natural zeolite (NZ) was used as a catalyst for pyrolysis reactions, which was modified by double ion exchange (H2NZ) and transition metals impregnation (Cu5H2NZ and Ni5H2NZ). The catalysts were characterized by nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction

Revisiting the relationship between natural resources and environmental quality- can ICT break the "resource curse" in the environment?

Despite the prevalence of discussions on the "resource curse", the impact of natural resources on environmental quality for better or for worse has not been clearly answered, this study aims to answer the question by introducing the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). To that end, by using the Instrumental Variable Generalized Method of Moments (IV GMM) estimator and a sample of 102 developing and emerging economies from 2006 to 2016, this paper studies the impact of ICT on the relationship between natural resources and environmental quality. Specially, the Environmental

Sustainable Discovery of Natural Anti-Aging Bioactives from Food Resources: Current Status and Machine Learning Perspectives.

Existing anti-aging drugs are often limited by toxicity and resistance. In contrast, natural substances derived from food resources, edible plants, and agricultural by-products offer advantages such as low toxicity and suitability for dietary intake. Utilizing these resources aligns with sustainable development goals by promoting the valorization of food waste and functional food development; however, their complex composition makes traditional discovery inefficient and resource-intensive. Machine learning (ML) provides a powerful, sustainable in silico solution. By analyzing vast datasets, co

The relative importance of resources and natural enemies in determining herbivore abundance: thistles, tephritids and parasitoids.

1. The relative importance of host-plant resources and natural enemies in influencing the abundance of insect herbivores was investigated in potted plant and natural population experiments, using tephritid (Diptera: Tephritidae) flies, their host plant, creeping thistle Cirsium arvense, and their Hymenoptera parasitoids. 2. Experimental manipulation of host-plant quality (i.e. levels of host-plant nutrients) and resource availability (i.e. the number of buds) increased tephritid abundance. There was no evidence that the seed-feeding tephritid fly Xyphosia miliaria preferentially oviposited on

Extracellular Vesicles Derived from Natural Biological Resources and Their Potential to Facilitate Skin Regeneration and Rejuvenation.

The skin, the largest organ in the human body, serves as a crucial barrier against external stimuli. With the acceleration of social industrialization and the worsening of global climate change, the risk of physical, chemical and biological damage to the skin has significantly increased. Among these, surgical wounds, accidental injuries, diabetic wounds, and ultraviolet (UV)-radiation-induced photoaging are particularly common. Cutaneous wound healing is a complex and dynamic process that requires precise coordination of numerous molecular events to effectively repair damaged skin. Skin photoa

A structured elicitation method to identify key direct risk factors for the management of natural resources.

The high level of uncertainty inherent in natural resource management requires planners to apply comprehensive risk analyses, often in situations where there are few resources. In this paper, we demonstrate a broadly applicable, novel and structured elicitation approach to identify important direct risk factors. This new approach combines expert calibration and fuzzy based mathematics to capture and aggregate subjective expert estimates of the likelihood that a set of direct risk factors will cause management failure. A specific case study is used to demonstrate the approach; however, the desc

A haploid wild yeast resource for exploring the natural ecology of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae occurs predominantly in the diploid state in nature, limiting genetic analyses of wild populations. Here, we establish a haploid collection from 32 Taiwanese S. cerevisiae isolates through targeted HO disruption. This resource spans predomesticated Asian wild lineages and enables the investigation of reproductive isolation and ecological trait variation. Although all pairwise hybridizations formed zygotes, many yielded reduced spore viability, revealing strong postzygotic barriers. Genome analyses associated reduced hybrid fertility with lineage-specific structural var

Candida albicans natural diversity: a resource to dissect fungal commensalism and pathogenesis.

Candida albicans is a ubiquitous fungus of humans. It is not only a component of the oral and intestinal microbiota of most healthy adults but also a major cause of mucosal disorders and life-threatening disseminated infections. Until recently, research on the biology and pathogenesis of the fungus was largely based on a single clinical isolate. We review investigations that have started to dissect a diverse set of C. albicans strains. Using different approaches to leverage the species' phenotypic and/or genetic diversity, these studies illuminate the wide range of interactions between fungus

The Ninapro database: A resource for sEMG naturally controlled robotic hand prosthetics.

The dexterous natural control of robotic prosthetic hands with non-invasive techniques is still a challenge: surface electromyography gives some control capabilities but these are limited, often not natural and require long training times; the application of pattern recognition techniques recently started to be applied in practice. While results in the scientific literature are promising they have to be improved to reach the real needs. The Ninapro database aims to improve the field of naturally controlled robotic hand prosthetics by permitting to worldwide research groups to develop and test

PCSK9-Mediated Inflammation in Foam Cell Formation and Exploring the Biologically Active Compounds Derived From Natural Resources.

Atherosclerosis develops as a persistent inflammatory condition that gradually alters the vascular structure and condition, in which the formation of macrophage-derived foam cells plays a central role in disease initiation and progression. Although proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) is widely recognised for its involvement in low-density lipoprotein receptor regulation and systemic lipid homeostasis, growing evidence indicates that PCSK9 also exerts a direct influence on macrophage inflammatory responses and intracellular lipid metabolism. Within atherosclerotic lesions, PCS
