Geochemistry at a Karst Spring Reveals Complex Stormflow Dynamics in an Eogenetic Karst Aquifer.

The Floridan Aquifer System (FAS) is a triple porosity, eogenetic karst aquifer that contains extensive phreatic cave networks embedded in a high permeability carbonate matrix. These unique characteristics create complex flow dynamics that impact residence time distributions within the FAS, which are important to constrain for implementing effective water resource strategies. The impacts of eogenetic karst characteristics on seasonal and longer term hydrological dynamics have been previously evaluated; however, stormflow remains understudied. Our study explores stormflow dynamics at a karst sp

Fluoride levels in water sources inside the crater of Furnas volcano: Potential health implications for local communities and tourists.

Fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral, is widely recognized for its dual role in human health. At optimal concentrations, it provides dental benefits; however, excessive fluoride can lead to dental and skeletal fluorosis. Volcanic regions are known for their geothermal water sources that contain elevated levels of fluoride, raising concerns about potential health impacts on local populations. This study focuses on the Furnas volcano region at the Island of São Miguel, Azores, where natural springs are promoted for their therapeutic and medicinal properties. However, these springs also raise

Isolation and molecular identification of Acanthamoeba spp. from hot springs in Mazandaran province, northern Iran.

Acanthamoeba is a free-living protozoan that can be found in natural and artificial environments such as hot tubs, surface water and springs and can cause severe diseases including amoebic keratitis and granulomatous amoebic encephalitis. The present study was conducted owing to the lack of research regarding genotypes of Acanthamoeba in hot springs of Mazandaran province in northern Iran. Twenty-four water samples were collected from all hot springs in Mazandaran province. After filtration through nitrocellulose membrane, samples were cultured on non-nutrient agar medium enriched with TYIS-33

Carbon-dioxide Thermo-saline Springs in the Light of Modern Research.

Investigations on the influence of natural Nauheim standing and running effervescent CO(2) thermo-saline baths on the subcutaneous CO(2) and O(2) tension in gas under the skin in rabbits showed a decrease of the CO(2) tension in all experiments. The O(2) tension increased in 50 per cent. of the experiments, in the others it remained unaffected. The results are interpreted as due to an increase in ventilation and an increase in peripheral blood-flow, the peripheral blood-vessels being dilated. Plain water baths of the same temperature and duration did not show this effect on the peripheral circ

Environmental investigation of a hepatitis A outbreak associated with spring water consumption in an Anabaptist community: Kentucky, 2018-2019.

In 2019, a hepatitis A outbreak in an Anabaptist community was reported to the Kentucky Department for Public Health. Epidemiological data suggested untreated spring water as a potential outbreak exposure. An environmental investigation was conducted to evaluate this less common hepatitis A virus (HAV) exposure source. We collected water samples from the main spring used for drinking and produce irrigation by the primary household where cases were identified, from springs feeding the main spring, and from the household's gray water discharge and human waste systems. Samples were tested for HAV

Mechanisms underlying tolerance of severe hypoxia in sulfide spring fish.

Isolating the causative effects of single sources of selection in nature is challenging because environments are often complex with different selective pressures covarying along environmental gradients. For instance, sulfide springs are characterized by high levels of toxic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and low levels of oxygen in comparison to nearby non-sulfidic streams, which are normoxic. Previous studies on Poecilia mexicana in these sulfide spring systems have focused on the effects of H2S on gene expression, but hypoxia could also impact gene expression. We compared hypoxia tolerance, baseline

Functional consequences of phenotypic variation between locally adapted populations: Swimming performance and ventilation in extremophile fish.

Natural selection drives the evolution of traits to optimize organismal performance, but optimization of one aspect of performance can influence other aspects of performance. Here, we asked how phenotypic variation between locally adapted fish populations affects locomotion and ventilation, testing for functional trade-offs and trait-performance correlations. Specifically, we investigated two populations of livebearing fish (Poecilia mexicana) that inhabit distinct habitat types (hydrogen-sulphide-rich springs and adjacent nonsulphidic streams). For each individual, we quantified different met

Development of a pre-clinical experimental simulation model of the natural porcine knee with appropriate ligamentous constraints.

A robust and stratified pre-clinical natural knee model, which has the capability to more appropriately simulate the biomechanical environment in vivo, will deliver more efficient and reliable assessment of soft tissue interventions before clinical studies. In order to simulate the biomechanical function of the natural knee without the natural ligaments in place, there is a requirement to develop appropriate spring constraints for the natural knee model. Therefore, this study was to investigate the effect of spring constraints on the function and output of the natural porcine knee model, and d

Epigenetic inheritance of DNA methylation changes in fish living in hydrogen sulfide-rich springs.

Environmental factors can promote phenotypic variation through alterations in the epigenome and facilitate adaptation of an organism to the environment. Although hydrogen sulfide is toxic to most organisms, the fish Poecilia mexicana has adapted to survive in environments with high levels that exceed toxicity thresholds by orders of magnitude. Epigenetic changes in response to this environmental stressor were examined by assessing DNA methylation alterations in red blood cells, which are nucleated in fish. Males and females were sampled from sulfidic and nonsulfidic natural environments; indiv

A Rare Cause of Hemoptysis: Oropharyngeal Leech.

We report the case of a 33-year-old patient who presented with dyspnea and hemoptysis due to an oropharyngeal leech infestation. The patient was a shepherd and his detailed history revealed that he had been drinking water from natural springs. In the examination, a vivid dark green colored foreign body moving towards the nasopharynx and hypopharynx was detected in the oropharynx. The leech was removed under local anesthesia by gently grasping with the help of a long clamp. It should be noted that leeches are common in rural water sources and they can cause severe morbidity and even mortalities

Sequence types diversity of Legionella pneumophila isolates from environmental water sources in Guangzhou and Jiangmen, China.

In this study, 159 Legionella pneumophila strains isolated from various natural and artificial water sources in Guangzhou and Jiangmen, China, were subjected to genotyping by the sequence-based typing (SBT) scheme. These isolates were assigned into 53 sequence types (STs) (50 STs with seven loci data and three unidentified STs with incomplete loci profiles) with ST1 as the dominant one (14.5%), and the index of diversity (IOD) was 0.950. Eight new alleles and 34 new STs were reported here. Notably, most of the newly identified STs with seven loci data (24/34) contained no new allele, implying

Fungi dominate eukaryotic microbial assemblages in hot spring biofilms of East and Southeast Asia.

Terrestrial hot springs are globally distributed extreme environments, and these systems have long served as natural laboratories for studying microbial life under thermal stress. While much of the research to date has focused on thermophilic bacteria and archaea, there is a growing appreciation for the diversity and ecological significance of eukaryotic microorganisms in these habitats. In this study, we used metagenomic sequencing to assess inter-domain microbial diversity in biofilms from 47 circumneutral hot springs across East and Southeast Asia, with a specific focus on resolving eukaryo

Spinal deformity in triploid grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella (Valenciennes).

From mid-2004 to mid-2005, several grass carp, Ctenophayngodon idella (Valenciennes), showing evidence of spinal deformity were presented to the Aquatic Animal Health Program, Cornell University. The carp were from three separate locations in New York State. The first case involved several fish from a natural body of water in the Catskill Mountain region of south-eastern New York State. The second was a single affected individual from a private pond in the Fingerlakes region of Central New York State. The third was a single individual from the Cold Springs Harbor Fish Hatchery, Cold Springs Ha

Epidemiologic potentials and correlational analysis of Vibrio species and virulence toxins from water sources in greater Bushenyi districts, Uganda.

Adequate water supply is one of the public health issues among the population living in low-income settings. Vibriosis remain a significant health challenge drawing the attention of both healthcare planners and researchers in South West districts of Uganda. Intending to clamp down the disease cases in the safest water deprive locality, we investigated the virulent toxins as contaminants and epidemiologic potentials of Vibrio species recovered from surface waters in greater Bushenyi districts, Uganda. Surface water sources within 46 villages located in the study districts were obtained between

Three-Dimensional Calvarial Growth in Spring-Assisted Cranioplasty for Correction of Sagittal Synostosis.

Spring-assisted cranioplasty (SAC) is a minimally invasive technique for treating sagittal synostosis in young infants. Yet, follow-up data on cranial growth in patients who have undergone SAC are lacking. This project aimed to understand how the cranial shape develops during the postoperative period, from spring insertion to removal. 3D head scans of 30 consecutive infants undergoing SAC for sagittal synostosis were acquired using a handheld scanner pre-operatively, immediately postoperatively, at follow-up and at spring removal; 3D scans of 41 age-matched control subjects were also acquired.

microRNA expression variation as a potential molecular mechanism contributing to adaptation to hydrogen sulphide.

microRNAs (miRNAs) are post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression and can play an important role in modulating organismal development and physiology in response to environmental stress. However, the role of miRNAs in mediating adaptation to diverse environments in natural study systems remains largely unexplored. Here, we characterized miRNAs and their expression in Poecilia mexicana, a species of small fish that inhabits both normal streams and extreme environments in the form of springs rich in toxic hydrogen sulphide (H2 S). We found that P. mexicana has a similar number of miRNA ge

Groundwater antibiotic pollution and its relationship with dissolved organic matter: Identification and environmental implications.

The occurrence of veterinary antibiotics and hydro-chemical parameters in eleven natural springs in a livestock production area is evaluated, jointly with the characterization of their DOM fingerprint by Orbitrap HRMS. Tetracycline and sulfonamide antibiotics were ubiquitous in all sites, and they were detected at low ng L-1 concentrations, except for doxycycline, that was present at μg L-1 in one location. DOM analysis revealed that most molecular formulas were CHO compounds (49 %-68 %), with a remarkable percentage containing nitrogen and sulphur (16 %-23 % and 11 %-24 %, respectively). Majo

Surviving Naegleria fowleri infections: A successful case report and novel therapeutic approach.

Naegleria fowleri is a deadly human pathogen recognized as the causative agent of Primary Amoebic Meningitis (PAM). N. fowleri is commonly found in warm freshwater environments such as natural or man-made lakes, hot springs, and resort spas frequented by tourists. PAM infections have a mortality rate between 95 and 99% with minimal progress being made toward a successful treatment therapy. We report the case of a 12-year old American female who survived a PAM infection and propose a new drug therapy which includes the antimicrobial drug Miltefosine.
