[Soft tissue injuries of the neck].

Thirty five patients were examined. All had soft tissue spinal cord injury and were not treated in a hospital. Complete diagnostic and therapeutical protocol was carried out only for 13 patients. The goal was to compare their initial condition with condition after the control examination after the therapy. Results showed that 8 patients (23%) suffered from pain in the neck, 25 (72%) had limited neck mobility, and 17 (49%) manifested neurological symptoms. Signs of osteochondrosis at isolated spinal levels and dyscoligamental instability were noted in one fifth of the observed patients. In 24 p

Neck injuries among the elderly in Sweden.

Neck injuries are some of the most important injuries as they have the potential to influence the spinal cord. A previous national survey of neck injuries in Sweden revealed that injury incidence was increasing for the population over 65 years of age, although it was decreasing for the population as a whole. The aim of this study was therefore to further clarify the magnitude, severity, and external causes of neck injuries in the elderly people in Sweden. A national incidence study, with focus on the age group above 65 years, was undertaken with data from the injury surveillance program at the

Head and neck injuries in young athletes.

Careful study of the pathophysiology and epidemiology of sports-related spine injuries brings to light many common features. The incidence increases as the sport becomes increasingly violent and aggressive. Poor conditioning and lack of knowledge of the proper techniques of the sport put the athlete at significant risk for head and spine injury. Improper helmet fit and the use of the head as an offensive weapon also are common features of injury. Although recognition of these features has resulted in a dramatic reduction in catastrophic neurological injury, the athlete remains at risk for less

Rehabilitation of neck and low back injuries.

Sports-related mechanisms of cervical and lumbar spine injury and their clinical presentations have been discussed. The keys to treatment of these injuries in the athlete include rehabilitation of the injured area, recognition of the mechanism of injury, and correction of any technical faults that may have contributed thereto. Criteria for return to sport are a critical part of the rehabilitation of the injured athlete. Most importantly, the practitioner can anticipate potential areas of injury and can recommend prehabilitation exercises to avert many of these injuries.

Football head and neck injuries--an update.

In the last 5 years there has been a dramatic decrease in the deaths directly related to football participation. The incidence of serious spinal cord injuries, however, appears to be increasing. The number of quadriplegic athletes varies from an estimated 1 per 7,000 to 1 per 58,000 participants per year in different areas of the country. The majority of catastrophic head and neck injuries occurs while tackling or blocking, and defensive players are much more liable to sustain these injuries than offensive players. In addition to permanent and irreversible spinal cord damage, football players

Trends in Pediatric Neck Injuries During Sporting Activities.

Background: Although neck injuries secondary to sporting activities in the pediatric demographic presenting to the emergency department (ED) are common, predictors of needing higher-level care (HLC) outside immediate treatment and release are not clear. The aim of this study was to describe how these neck injuries present in the United States (US) and identify predictors of HLC. Methods: We interrogated the US National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database for presentations to the ED of pediatric patients (aged 6-18 years old) whose primary complaint was neck injury in the set

[Tracheobronchoscopy in injuries of the thorax and neck].

The results of examination and treatment of patients with penetrating wounds of the thorax and the neck are analysed. Diagnostic potential abilities of roentgenography and tracheobronchoscopy are evaluated comparatively. High diagnostic and curative effectiveness of tracheobronchoscopy is detected, which is indicated in diagnosis of the wounds of the larynx and the trachea as well as in cases of technical difficulties during endotracheal intubation. Besides, tracheobronchoscopy is indicated in postoperative period for sanation of the tracheobronchial tree under visual control for prevention of

Neurological sequelae of minor head and neck injuries.

The objective was to determine why some people who are involved in minor motor vehicle accidents, without loss of consciousness, have persisting headaches and neckache, and to suggest management of these symptoms. Between 1954 and 1994, over 4400 cases were referred for medico-legal opinions. A group has been selected for discussion. During the period 1954-1966, 414 cases following closed head injuries were seen with varying periods of post traumatic amnesia (PTA) from nil to greater than 72 h. The average time between the accident and the examination was 21 months. The shortest period was 3 m

[Bite injuries in the head and neck area].

In Germany about 8500 dog-bite injuries in the face occur every year; more than 50% of the victims are infants and schoolchildren. Besides dogs, other animals such as cats or horses may be responsible for these accidents. Even human bites are reported. The predominant areas are the nose and the auricles. The tissue defects may be superficial, but they can even cause amputations, including severe vascular and nerve or bony destruction. Systemic antibiotic therapy is needed when the wound is infected. The surgical approach to bite injuries includes local wound cleansing, careful excision of necr
