A Muscle Variant of the Lateral Neck Region: The Cleido-Vertebral Muscle.

INTRODUCTION: Anatomical variations of the neck muscles have previously been reported, involving in particular the omohyoid and sternothyroid muscles. We herein report a novel variant neck muscle found during a routine surgical procedure. CASE REPORT: A 63-year-old women underwent a pelvi-mandibulectomy with bilateral neck dissection for a squamous cell carcinoma of the floor of mouth pT3N1. On the right neck dissection, the present peculiar muscle was discovered. It was located in the lateral region of the neck, deeply to the sternocleidomastoid muscle and caudally to the hyoid bone. It took

Predictive Contribution of the Superficial Neck Muscles to Short-Latency Rate of Force Development of the Head and Neck.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the contribution of splenius capitis, sternocleidomastoid, and upper fibers of trapezius activation to the gains in rate of force development (RFD) of the head and neck during maximum voluntary ballistic contractions. METHODS: RFD gain was facilitated by a single-session intervention for maximum voluntary ballistic contractions in the anterior direction, oriented at 45° to the midsagittal plane, which require active restraint of axial rotation. Muscle activation for the agonist (sternocleidomastoid) and 2 antagonists (splenius capitis and upper fibers of trapezius) was ev

Balance alterations are associated with neck pain and neck muscle endurance in migraine.

BACKGROUND: Migraine patients may present with both cervical and balance dysfunctions. The neck plays an important role in balance by providing substantial proprioceptive input, which is integrated in the central nervous system and influences the balance control systems. Whether balance and neck dysfunctions are associated in patients with migraine is still to be explored. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the association between the sensory organization test of balance with neck pain features, cervical strength, endurance, and range of motion in patients with migraine. METHODS: Sixty-f

Quantitative comparison of three thyroidectomy approaches in neck muscles, voice, and swallowing functions.

OBJECTIVE: This study compares endoscopic thyroidectomy by gasless unilateral axillary approach (ETGUA) and sternocleidomastoid leading-edge approach (SLEA) with conventional open thyroidectomy (COT) in hemithyroidectomy. The main focus is on the protection of neck muscles (sternocleidomastoid, omohyoid, sternothyroid) and the postoperative function of voice and swallowing yielded through these common approaches. METHODS: A total of 302 patients who underwent hemithyroidectomy were enrolled and divided into three groups: ETGUA (n = 101), SLEA (n = 100), and COT (n = 101). Ultrasound was used

Sonographic Guide for Botulinum Toxin Injections of the Neck Muscles in Cervical Dystonia.

Intramuscular botulinum toxin (BoTX) injection is the first-line treatment of cervical dystonia. Poor treatment outcomes and some side effects, however, have been reported after BoTX applications. One of the most important reasons is incorrect localization of the needle during toxin injections. Without imaging, it is impossible to verify precise needle positioning in the proper muscle. Ultrasound has been recommended because of its high capability in illustrating most of the neck muscles. This review article discusses how ultrasound imaging can be used to scan/access neck muscles, mainly from

Musculotendon and fascicle strains in anterior and posterior neck muscles during whiplash injury.

STUDY DESIGN: A biomechanical neck model combined with subject-specific kinematic and electromyographic data were used to calculate neck muscle strains during whiplash. OBJECTIVES: To calculate the musculotendon and fascicle strains during whiplash and to compare these strains to published muscle injury thresholds. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Previous work has shown potentially injurious musculotendon strains in sternocleidomastoid (SCM) during whiplash, but neither the musculotendon strains in posterior cervical muscles nor the fascicle strains in either muscle group have been examined. [Selective denervation of neck muscles in the treatment of spasmodic torticollis. Preliminary results].

The authors present a review of the methods of surgical treatment of spasmodic torticollis, particularly the selective denervation of cervical muscles. Based on the literature and own experience cases treated by means of this method are described. Using selective ramisectomy it is possible to attain permanent improvement in most patients suffering from spasmodic torticollis, with very low complication rate. Our preliminary cases indicates that this method of treatment allows to acquire improvement of quality of life in patients with this particular type of dystonia.

Electromyographic fatigue in neck/shoulder muscles and endurance in women with repetitive work.

EMG was recorded with surface electrodes from the trapezius and deltoid muscles during a static endurance test at approximately 20% of maximal voluntary contraction. Objective parameters for localized muscular fatigue were derived from the time course of the root mean square (RMS) and mean power frequency (MPF) of the EMG recordings. Isotonic regression is introduced as a tool for assessment of such parameters. The most pronounced sign of fatigue for trapezius was an increase in the RMS values, while for deltoid it was a decrease in the MPF values. This could be explained by the different func

Chemoradiation (CCRT) Effects on Head and Neck Muscles: Insights Into CCRT-Induced Dysphagia.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) is an effective treatment for various head and neck cancers; however, CCRT can result in significant swallowing impairment, presumably due largely to dysfunction of the muscles of swallowing, which are within the field of radiation. This translational study examines the mechanisms underlying CCRT-induced muscle dysfunction using (1) a rat model of CCRT and (2) analysis of archival human specimens. METHODS: 131 Sprague Dawley rats were divided into experimental and control groups. Experimental rats received cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil

Dystonic neck muscles show a shift in relative autospectral power during isometric contractions.

OBJECTIVE: To identify effects of a deviant motor drive in the autospectral power of dystonic muscles during voluntary contraction in cervical dystonia patients. METHODS: Submaximal (20%) isometric head-neck tasks were performed with the head fixed, measuring surface EMG of the sternocleidomastoid, splenius capitis and semispinalis capitis in CD patients and controls. Autospectral power of muscle activity, and head forces was analyzed using cumulative distribution functions (CDF). A downward shift between the theta/low alpha-band (3-10Hz) and the high alpha/beta-band (10-30Hz) was detected us

Possible effects of pramipexole on neck muscles in a patient with Parkinson's disease.

Recent case reports suggest a possible causal correlation between antecollis and pramipexole. Here, we report the case of a 62-year-old Italian man with a 2-year history of Parkinson's disease (PD) and cervical spondylosis for which he was treated with pramipexole. He developed severe neck rigidity immediately after an inguinal hernia operation but several months after introduction of pramipexole. He was initially treated with painkillers and physiotherapy with no significant improvement. His condition deteriorated presenting disproportionate rigidity between anterior and posterior neck muscle

Investigation of passive tone and viscoelasticity in neck muscles in pre-symptomatic neck flexion abnormality in Parkinson's disease: Observational study.

BACKGROUND: Forward neck flexion (FNF) is a common postural abnormality in Parkinson's disease (PD), which disturbs the overall body alignment and can lead to more severe deformities through both central nervous system control and biomechanical compensation. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the biomechanical and viscoelastic properties of forward neck muscles related to FNF in individuals with PD, both with and without FNF, in comparison to age-matched individuals with normal posture. METHODS: Hand-held myotonometry (Myoton Pro®) was conducted to determine the biomechanical

Effect of neck flexion angles on neck muscle activity among smartphone users with and without neck pain.

This study examined the differences in neck muscle activity at various neck flexion angles in smartphone users with and without neck pain. Forty-four participants performed texting tasks for 1 min and 30 s. Neck muscle activity and pain in the neck were measured at different neck flexion angles. There was a difference in neck muscle activity for each of the neck flexion angles; the Cervical Erector Spinae (CES) muscle activity increased while the Upper Trapezius (UT) muscle activity decreased when at increased neck flexion angles. At neck flexion angle of 0°-15°, the activity of both CES and U
