In a four-year study of penetrating injuries potentially contaminated with blood among health care personnel, the majority of cases occurred amongst nurses (65%). The wards were the commonest place for injury to occur (39%) which questions whether difficult practical procedures should be performed there. Injuries occurred most commonly during the afternoons (63%). Although needles were the most frequent implement (79%) causing injury, very few cases (7%) were related to the re-sheathing of cannulae. The commonest injured area (46%) was the palmar surface of the distal forefinger of the non-dom

Objective: After a needlestick injury (NSI) with contaminated blood, there is a risk of seroconversion. Statutory accident insurance (SAI) claims data were used to determine the numbers of seroconversions for hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV, HCV) and for HIV. Materials and methods: Cases of HBV, HCV or HIV infection recognised as occupational diseases between 2006 and 2015 were selected from the BGW (Berufsgenossenschaft für Gesundheitsdienst und Wohlfahrtspflege) database. Cases where an NSI was reported to the accident insurer before the diagnosis of the infectious disease was made were inclu

We report a case of monkeypox in a physician after an occupational needlestick injury from a pustule. This case highlights risk for occupational transmission and manifestations of the disease after percutaneous transmission: a short incubation period, followed by a solitary lesion at the injured site and later by systemic symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Clinical students, like health workers, are at risk of sharp/needle stick injuries and potential percutaneous exposure to blood and body fluids. They acquire infections like Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) through injuries. This study determined the prevalence and factors associated with sharp injuries among clinical students at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital.
METHODS: Across sectional study was carried out at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, a teaching hospital located along Pallisa road, Mbale City, Eastern Uganda. Ethical approval was obtained,

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Needlestick and sharp injuries (NSIs) are prevalent among registered nurses and nursing students. Although NSIs are a multifactorial phenomenon, the relationship between sleep problems and NSIs remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to examine the association between sleep-related problems and NSIs among nursing students.
METHODOLOGY: Cross-sectional study of n = 584 nursing students from two Ecuadorian universities. Sociodemographic and academic data as well as information on NSIs in the previous three months were obtained through an online questionnaire. Self-

BACKGROUND: Physicians, nurses, and others are at risk of needlesticks, yet little national information is available regarding incidence across demographic and occupational categories.
METHODS: Analysis was conducted on national data on occupational injuries for 1992-2003 from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Because BLS data were limited to cases with 1 or more days of work loss, and reasons related to reporting of incidents, the data only reflected a subset of all needlesticks. Nevertheless, the data were internally consistent across categories so that relative magnitudes were reliable

BACKGROUND: Needlestick injuries among healthcare professionals continue to be an occupational hazard, frequently and incorrectly regarded as low-risk, and exacerbated by underreporting. We aimed to investigate rates of needlestick injury, reasons for underreporting, and how explicit announcements that patients are "high-risk" (i.e., human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis, or intravenous drug abuse history) might affect the actions of those at risk of sustaining an injury.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was administered to medical students (MS), nursing students (NS), and residents.

BACKGROUND: Needlestick injuries (NSIs) are a major occupational hazard for healthcare workers, but evidence on acupuncture-related NSIs remains limited.
METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional survey was conducted among acupuncture physicians, students, and nurses across 10 provinces in China from February to July 2025. Past-year and lifetime NSI prevalence, severe NSI prevalence, and blood-exposure NSI prevalence were estimated. Incidence density was calculated as the number of injuries per 1000 person-years. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with past

Occupational transmission of hepatitis C (HCV) is rare but has been repeatedly described in the published literature. Early diagnosis and therapy of acute hepatitis C is associated with an excellent chance of permanent HCV elimination. The majority of chronic HCV infections, however, lead to a slowly progressive hepatitis with associated morbidity and risk of liver cirrhosis. For this reason the need for antiviral therapy has to be evaluated immediately.

BACKGROUND: Needlestick injuries (NSIs) are a major occupational hazard among healthcare workers and expose them to serious blood-borne infections such as hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and human immunodeficiency virus. Healthcare workers in teaching hospitals, particularly interns and residents, are at increased risk due to limited experience, high workload, and frequent involvement in invasive procedures. Despite the availability of universal precautions, NSIs continue to occur and are often underreported.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to assess the knowledge, attitud

BACKGROUND: Hospital cleaners frequently get needle stick and sharps injuries (NSSIs), which are described as unintentional injuries brought on by various sharp objects, needles, scalpels, and glass slides, cutting through the skin while providing cleaning and managing medical care. However, there are fewer studies among these marginalized working groups than among other healthcare staffs. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess NSSIs, associated factors among hospital cleaners and preventive implications in eight selected tertiary public hospitals of eastern part of Ethiopia. METHODS: A hospital

BACKGROUND: Needlestick injuries (NSIs) among healthcare workers (HCWs) represent a major occupational risk. While the underreporting of NSI is well-acknowledged, there are limited data on its magnitude. The objective was to estimate the incidence of NSIs and the degree of underreporting among HCWs and their influencing factors.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out at a large tertiary care hospital. The study targeted clinical HCWs who were directly involved in patient care in different departments/units. Non-clinical HCWs and students/trainees were excluded. Data were collected u
