Jellyfish venom proteins and their pharmacological potentials: A review.

Several research in the organisms of marine invertebrates to assess the medicinal ability of its bio-active molecules have yielded very positive results in recent times. Jellyfish secreted venoms are rich sources of toxins intended to catch prey or deter predators among invertebrate species, but they may also have harmful effects on humans. The nematocyst, a complex intracellular system that injects a venomous mixture into prey or predators that come into contact with the tentacles or other parts of the body of cnidarians, determines the venomous existence of cnidarians. Nematocyst venoms are

Treatment of Atlantic cnidarian envenomations.

Envenomation syndromes induced by Atlantic cnidaria have been tabulated and their therapy discussed. The pharmacokinetics of the venom has been emphasized. Pain occurs instantly and reaches a zenith rapidly in the surf. The nematocysts have already penetrated the dermis and disease proceeds before help can arrive. This fact plus the relative impermeability of human epidermis hampers the efficacy of topical agents. Oral analgesics, the agents of choice, are seldom offered and systemic administration of these drugs is usually not necessary. The use of hot or cold applications has not been settle

Jellyfish envenomation syndromes updated.

Jellyfish venoms are mixtures of toxic and/or antigenic polypeptides and enzymes pathogenic to human beings. As newer therapeutic agents become available to treat the various reactions to stings caused by these animals, an accurate diagnosis of the type of reaction the patient experiences and of the offending species will be necessary. Fatal reactions may be caused either by anaphylaxis or by the action of toxins in the venom on the heart, respiratory center, or kidneys. Cutaneous eruptions after envenomation may be local, generalized, exaggerated, recurrent, delayed, persistent, or occur at s

Anaphylaxis after contact with a jellyfish.

We report a case of an anaphylactic reaction to a jellyfish sting. The episode was manifested by hypotension and bronchospasm. The patient's basophils released histamine in response to nematocyst venom from the Chesapeake Bay sea nettle; this sensitivity could be passively transferred by a heat labile serum factor. This appears to be the first case report of such a reaction.

Millepora species (Fire Coral) Sting: A Case Report and Review of Recommended Management.

Fire corals (Millepora spp) are the second most common reef-forming organisms and are frequently found in tropical and subtropical waters. Fire corals are not true corals but rather hydrozoans more closely related to jellyfish and sea nettles. Rigidly affixed to the reef and with a branching structure, each fire coral is a colony of numerous individual hydrozoans forming a collective symbiotic organism. It is common for divers to accidentally make contact with fire corals. Fire coral contact is characterized by the immediate onset of burning pain caused by venom discharge from numerous tiny ne

Dermatitis due to Olindias sambaquiensis: a case report.

Olindias sambaquiensis, Muller 1861 (Hydrozoa: Limnomedusae: Olindiidae) is a neritic jellyfish endemic in the Blanca Bay area (South of Buenos Aires, Argentina). In this paper we describe the first report of a dermatitis caused by this jellyfish in a thirty-four-year-old marine biologist who presented with an erythematous vesicular eruption after contact with Olindias sambaquiensis. Some preliminary ultramicroscopic observations on the nematocysts of this jellyfish are also reported.

Seabather's eruption: report of fourteen cases.

Seabather's eruption is a papulo-pruritic dermatitis caused by the nematocysts of the larvae of the jellyfish Linuche unguiculata retained in the clothing fibers. Previously reported in Brazil, this work describes fourteen cases that occurred in the State of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. The new cases observed over a short period of time (the first half of January, 2012), at the height of the summer season, should alert health teams to possible epidemics on the coast of the state of Santa Catarina.

Evolution of complex organelles in ocelloid-bearing dinoflagellates.

Warnowiid dinoflagellates are known for possessing two of the most complex structures known in single cells: multiprojectile nematocysts and the camera eye-like ocelloid. The rarity of warnowiids and their intractability in culture have stymied efforts to understand the function and role of these structures. Recent single-cell transcriptome sequencing efforts revealed that the plastid within the ocelloid complex (analogous to the retina in an animal eye) may have lost photosystem II (PSII), while retaining photosystem I as a putative light-sensing mechanism. However, this finding was produced

A Case of Cellulitis Associated with Coral Injury.

Corals are the marine organism that belongs to the phylum Cnidaria, and are one of the common causes of superficial injury in the marine environment. In addition to acute reactions such as burning or stinging pain and erythema, coral injuries may present with complications such as foreign body reactions, bacterial infections, and/or localized eczematous reactions. A 23-year-old male presented with an erythematous edematous tender patch with centrally grouped vesicles on the left ankle; the injury had occurred during skin-scuba diving 2 days before. A biopsy of the lesion treated with hematoxyl

Health issues for surfers.

Surfers are prone to acute injuries as well as conditions resulting from chronic environmental exposure. Sprains, lacerations, strains, and fractures are the most common types of trauma. Injury from the rider's own surfboard may be the prevailing mechanism. Minor wound infections can be treated on an outpatient basis with ciprofloxacin or trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Jellyfish stings are common and may be treated with heat application. Other treatment regimens have had mixed results. Marine and Other Aquatic Dermatoses.

Occupational and recreational aquatic activity predisposes our population to a wide variety of dermatoses. Sunburn, urticaria, jellyfish stings, and contact dermatitis to rubber equipment are common allergies that are encountered in the aquatic environment. Among the infections, tinea versicolor, intertrigo, and verruca vulgaris are widespread. Swimmer's itch may occur due to skin penetration by schistosome cercariae, while free-floating nematocysts of marine coelenterates may precipitate seabather's eruption. Thiol-induced discharge of acontial nematocytes.

The discharge of nematocytes, the stinging cells of Coelenterata, is a poorly understood phenomenon. In particular, little is known about the chemical stimuli that trigger the discharge. In this paper, we show that thiols are able to initiate the nematocyst discharge in isolated nematocytes. Among the thiols tested, reduced glutathione and cysteine were found to be the most effective. The effect of glutathione was likely two-fold: it formed mixed disulfides with membrane thiols, as shown by the ability of the mercapto-blocking reagent iodoacetamide to abolish its action; and it bound to the me

Shared antigenicity between the polar filaments of myxosporeans and other Cnidaria.

Nematocysts containing coiled polar filaments are a distinguishing feature of members of the phylum Cnidaria. As a first step to characterizing the molecular structure of polar filaments, a polyclonal antiserum was raised in rabbits against a cyanogen bromide-resistant protein extract of mature cysts containing spores of Myxobolus pendula. The antiserum reacted only with proteins associated with extruded polar filaments. Western blot and whole-mount immunohistochemical analyses indicated a conservation of polar filament epitopes between M. pendula and 2 related cnidarians, i.e., the anthozoan,

Intracerebral hemorrhage and death after envenoming by the jellyfish Carukia barnesi.

INTRODUCTION: Irukandji syndrome is because of envenoming by a number of small jellyfish. It results in a delayed onset of generalized pain, sweating hypertension, and tachycardia. There is no antivenom. CASE REPORT: A 44-year-old healthy male was stung while swimming in NE Australia. He rapidly developed Irukandji syndrome. He had a rapid deterioration in conscious level because of an intracerebral hemorrhage. He developed left ventricular failure with an elevated troponin (34 mcg/L, N < 0.4) requiring inotropic support. He progressed to brain death and died on day 13 poststing. Nematocysts

Effects of cnidarian biofouling on salmon gill health and development of amoebic gill disease.

This study examines the potential implications of biofouling management on the development of an infectious disease in Norwegian farmed salmon. The hydroid Ectopleura larynx frequently colonises cage nets at high densities (thousands of colonies per m2) and is released into the water during regular in-situ net cleaning. Contact with the hydroids' nematocysts has the potential to cause irritation and pathological damage to salmon gills. Amoebic gill disease (AGD), caused by the amoeba Paramoeba perurans, is an increasingly international health challenge in Atlantic salmon farming. AGD often occ

Isolation and characterization of a novel protein toxin from the Hawaiian box jellyfish (sea wasp) Carybdea alata.

The box jellyfish (sea wasp) Carybdea alata Reynaud, 1830 (Cubozoa) is distributed widely in the tropics. The sting of C. alata causes severe pain and cutaneous inflammation in humans. We successfully isolated C. alata toxin-A (CaTX-A, 43 kDa) and -B (CaTX-B, 45 kDa) for the first time from the tentacle of C. alata collected at a site along the Hawaiian shore. The experimental results showed that CaTX-A, but not CaTX-B, is present in the nematocyst, the organ responsible for stinging. Both CaTX-A and -B showed potent hemolytic activity, with CaTX-A being lethally toxic to crayfish when adminis

Jellyfish sting injury to the cornea.

A 25-year-old woman presented to the emergency room 2 hours after a jellyfish sting to the left eye. Centrally located linear epithelial defects were observed on slit-lamp evaluation. The epithelial defects improved but did not heal totally after meticulous patching with antibiotic ointment and cycloplegic drops. Small, subepithelial negative staining areas within the epithelial defects were observed on day 3. Confocal microscopy was performed and revealed thread-like hyperreflective structures, mainly located at the basal epithelial layer. Following debridement of the traumatized areas, the c
