Gnathostomiasis: a rare nematode infection.

Gnathostoma, primarily an animal nematode, can infect human by the third stage larva by consumption of undercooked or raw fish, poultry, or pork. In Bangladesh gnathostomiasis is a very rare condition. The first case, an ocular infection by gnathostoma was reported in 2001 from Rangpur, a northern district. This is the second case report of gnathostomiasis which also is an ocular infection, occurred in an area of greater district of Rangpur. A female patient of 32 year of age of the northern district, Nilphamari has got infected with a species of Gnathostoma, manifested by the appearance of a

The immunological consequences of nematode infection.

Nematode infections in the gut induce a strong immune response which is rapidly detected parenterally. The response is thymus-dependent and long-lasting and involves both antibodies and cell-mediated reactions. The immunological response to unrelated antigens, tumours and other infectious organisms is altered in animals infected with nematodes. Both antibodies and sensitized lymphocytes participate in the immune response which affects the nematodes themselves, and characteristically the lymphocyte-dependent step cannot act in lactating animals and is neither induced nor able to act in young an

The Immune Response to Nematode Infection.

Nematode infection is a major threat to the health of humans, domestic animals and wildlife. Nematodes vary in their effect on the host and in the mechanisms underlying immunity but the general features are becoming clear. There is considerable variation among individuals in resistance to infection and much of this variation is due to genetic variation in the immune response. The major histocompatibility complex has a strong influence on resistance to infection but other genes are collectively more important. Resistant individuals produce more IgA, eosinophils, IgE and mast cells than suscepti

Relationship of nematode cholinesterase activity and nematode burdens to the development of resistance to trichostrongyle infections in sheep.

The changes in nematode cholinesterase (ChE) activities were examined in relation to the development of resistance in (1) a flock of young grazing sheep, (2) grazing and penned sheep treated with dexamethasone and (3) penned sheep receiving a single mixed infection. Nematodes from grazing sheep with high faecal egg counts (FECs) had higher ChE activities than those from sheep with low FECs. Female nematodes tended to have higher ChE activities than males, and ChE activities in both tended to decline with increasing age of the sheep. The decline in female Trichostrongylus colubriformis ChE acti

Human intestinal nematode infections in Sri Lanka: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Sri Lanka, an island located in South Asia, once experienced a notable prevalence of human intestinal nematode infections (HINIs). With the implementation of control programs, infection prevalence was reduced. Detailed information on prevalence, distribution and temporal trends of HINIs is limited. This review aims to explore Sri Lanka's HINI distribution, trends, diagnostics, control and challenges. METHODOLOGY: We reviewed published information on HINIs in Sri Lanka in electronic databases, local journals and grey literature from inception to September 2022. Based on the Preferr

Nematode infections are risk factors for staphylococcal infection in children.

Nematode infection may be a risk factor for pyogenic liver abscess in children and we hypothesized that the immunomodulation induced by those parasites would be a risk factor for any staphylococcal infection in children. The present study was designed to compare, within the same hospital, the frequency of intestinal nematodes and Toxocara infection in children with and without staphylococcal infections. From October 1997 to February 1998, 80 children with staphylococcal infection and 110 children with other diseases were submitted to fecal examination, serology for Toxocara sp., evaluation of

Persistent efficacy of doramectin against experimental nematode infections in calves.

Three studies were conducted involving cattle exposed to experimental nematode infections. These studies were designed to investigate the prophylactic activity of a single subcutaneous treatment of doramectin at 200 micrograms kg-1 body weight against infections of Ostertagia ostertagi, Cooperia oncophora and Dictyocaulus viviparus. For each study, parasite-naive calves were randomly allocated to either a treated or a matched control group. One group received doramectin and the other received doramectin and the other received either no treatment or an injection of saline at 1 ml per 50 kg body

Treatment of soil-transmitted nematode infections in children with mebendazole.

Treatment of soil-transmitted nematodes with mebendazole was carried out in 137 children aged 6--15 years in Thailand. There were 100 cases of hookworm infection, 37 of ascariasis, 16 of trichuriasis and 32 of strongyloidiasis. Mebendazole was given at 100 mg twice daily for three consecutive days irrespective of age or weight. The reduction rates as seen by mean egg counts four weeks after treatment were 94.9% for hookworm infection, 100% for ascariasis and 93.9% for trichuriasis; the reduction rates of the mean larval count in 15 cases of strongyloidiasis was 82.1%. No side-effects were obse

Coproantigen Detection Augments Diagnosis of Common Nematode Infections in Dogs.

Microscopic methods which employ active or passive flotation have been used to detect parasite diagnostic stages in the feces of companion animals for many years. More recently, coproantigen ELISAs for the detection of excretory/secretory products from intestinal nematodes have been introduced. These assays can identify the presence of parasites when eggs are not recovered by flotation (e.g. prepatent infection or intermittent egg shedding). The study was designed to assess the added benefit of these coproantigen tests in canine fecal diagnostics. The work was performed at 3 separate sites whe

Advances in metabolic profiling of experimental nematode and trematode infections.

Metabonomics, which is the combination of metabolic profiling of biological samples using spectroscopic methods, together with multivariate data analysis, is a powerful approach for biomarker recovery. Moreover, metabonomics holds promise to enhance our understanding of host-parasite interactions at the metabolic level, and therefore provides a framework for discovery of novel targets for diagnostics, drugs and vaccines. In this review, we summarise progress made to date with metabolic profiling strategies applied to different host-parasite models in the laboratory. First, we emphasise the app

Advancing a multivalent 'Pan-anthelmintic' vaccine against soil-transmitted nematode infections.

The Sabin Vaccine Institute Product Development Partnership is developing a Pan-anthelmintic vaccine that simultaneously targets the major soil-transmitted nematode infections, in other words, ascariasis, trichuriasis and hookworm infection. The approach builds off the current bivalent Human Hookworm Vaccine now in clinical development and would ultimately add both a larval Ascaris lumbricoides antigen and an adult-stage Trichuris trichiura antigen from the parasite stichosome. Each selected antigen would partially reproduce the protective immunity afforded by UV-attenuated Ascaris eggs and Tr

Parasitism by Oestrus ovis: influence of sheep breed and nematode infections.

Previous studies showed that Santa Ines (SI) hair sheep were more resistant to gastrointestinal nematode infections (GIN) than Ile de France (IF) sheep. The present experiment aimed to evaluate if that reported resistance difference against GIN also occurred against Oestrus ovis infestation and also to evaluate the influence of O. ovis infestation on the gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) infections. SI (n=12) and IF (n=12) young male lambs were weaned at 2 months of age and moved to a paddock (0.3 ha) with Brachiaria decumbens grass, where they also received concentrate ration. The animals were

Epidemiology of soil-transmitted nematode infections in Ha Nam Province, Vietnam.

Baseline epidemiological data are presented from a parasitological survey conducted in Thuy Loi commune, Ha Nam province, Vietnam; a farming community where night soil is routinely used as fertilizer for crops. 177 households were visited and 543 individuals (aged 1-88 years) recruited to the study. Helminth infection intensity was assessed by Kato-Katz to determine the density of parasite eggs per gram of stool (epg). Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura and hookworm infections were the only species detected. 83% of individuals were infected with A. lumbricoides (mean epg = 11,971), 94%

Vaccine research and development for the prevention of filarial nematode infections.

The development of vaccines for the prevention of filarial nematode infections is in a state of relative infancy in comparison to vaccines for other parasitic diseases, such as schistosomiasis and malaria. There are many reasons for this slow start. Some of the principal problems are: (1) the lengthy and complex life cycle of these organisms with attendant complex immune responses, (2) the unique characteristics associated with a relatively large number of different pathogens, (3) the lack of suitable model systems for study of medically important infections, (4) the paucity of parasite materi
