Multi-scale habitat modeling framework for predicting the potential distribution of sheep gastrointestinal nematodes across Iran's three distinct climatic zones: a MaxEnt machine-learning algorithm.

Ecological niche models (ENMs) serve as valuable tools in assessing the potential species distribution, identifying crucial habitat components for species associations, and facilitating conservation efforts. The current study aimed to investigate the gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) infection in sheep, predict and analyze their ecological niches and ranges, and identify the key bioclimatic variables influencing their distribution across three distinct climatic regions in Iran. In a cross-sectional study, a total of 2140 fecal samples were collected from semi-arid (n = 800), arid (n = 500), an

Fasciola hepatica infection and association with gastrointestinal parasites in Creole goats from western Argentina.

Goats, called “the cow of the poor”, are the livestock species with the most significant population growth worldwide in recent years. Gastrointestinal parasitism constitutes one of the main constraints to its outdoor and extensive breeding in temperate and tropical countries. Despite a Creole goat population of nearly 4 million heads, local reports on parasitological prevalence are scarce, and while Fasciola hepatica infection is spread all over Argentina, the goat is usually neglected as a reservoir and economic losses are not considered. To evaluate gastrointestinal parasitism prevalence and

New parasitological findings for pre-Hispanic camelids.

Paleoparasitological examination provides information of parasite-host associations in the past, shedding light on the geographical origin of some parasites, on the possible dispersal routes and on some of the processes that modelled the parasitic communities. The aim of the present study was to examine parasite remains present in camelid coprolites collected from the archaeological site Alero Destacamento Guardaparque, Patagonia and to discuss the paleoparasitological findings in a biogeographical and paleoecological context. Coprolites were collected from different stratified layers dating f

Gastrointestinal nematodes of moose (Alces alces) in relation to supplementary feeding.

Winter supplementary feeding of wildlife is controversial because it may promote parasite and disease transmission by host aggregation. We investigated the effect of winter supplemental feeding of Scandinavian moose (Alces alces) on gastrointestinal (GI) parasite infection in two counties of southern Norway by comparing fecal egg counts of moose using, and not using, feeding stations between January 2007 and March 2010. We identified three different GI nematodes based on egg morphology. All three were found in Hedmark county while in Telemark county we found only Trichuris sp. (prevalence 33%)

On the survival of overwintering bovine gastrointestinal nematode larvae during the subsequent grazing season.

Large numbers of overwintering Nematodirus helvetianus were shown to survive on Maritime marshland pastures throughout the ensuing grazing season, while the numbers of Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora declined rapidly after the first few weeks. It was concluded that pastures carrying heavy overwintering residual infections, particularly of N. helvetianus, may be unsafe for susceptible cattle at any time during the following grazing season.

Gastrointestinal parasites of domestic sheep from Patagonia throughout historical times: A paleoparasitological approach.

Sheep husbandry in Patagonia, Argentina, started at the beginning of the 20th century from European settlers. Sanitary management is minimal, which has serious implications for the sheep health. Sheep can be infested by diverse parasites, with well over 150 species of internal and external parasites reported worldwide. Gastrointestinal parasitism is one of the most common and important infections in sheep concerning the health status, and is the cause of significant morbidity and mortality, which generates considerable production losses. The present work is the first paleoparasitological study

Naturally acquired ovine-adapted nematode infections in young cattle and their treatment with eprinomectin 5% w/v extended-release injection.

The objective of this controlled study was to determine the anthelmintic efficacy of eprinomectin 5% w/v extended-release injection (Eprinomectin ERI; LONGRANGE®, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health) against primarily ovine-adapted gastrointestinal strongylid nematode (GIN) parasites in naturally infected young cattle. Eighteen calves which grazed on a sheep-dominated mixed sheep-cattle farm were randomly allocated into two equal groups (saline [control] or Eprinomectin ERI, administered each at 1 mL/50 kg body weight once subcutaneously), treated and euthanized 14 days thereafter for a differe

Gastrointestinal parasites as a possible threat to an endangered autochthonous Portuguese sheep breed.

Helminth and protozoan infections are responsible for important diseases in grazing sheep, which can be especially threatening in an autochthonous breed at risk of extinction like the Churra Galega Mirandesa Portuguese sheep breed. The aim of the present study was to determine the diversity, prevalence and burden of gastrointestinal parasites in these sheep and to assess the effects of deworming practices, cohabiting animals on the farm and feed management. Coprological qualitative and quantitative analysis (flotation, natural sedimentation and McMaster method) were used to identify and quanti

Association between variation in faecal egg count for a mixed field-challenge of nematode parasites and IGHA gene polymorphism.

Research has shown that variation in ovine immunoglobulin A (IgA) levels are associated with reduced faecal egg counts (FECs) in sheep hosting gastro-intestinal (GI) parasites. Variation in the constant region of the ovine IgA heavy alpha chain gene (IGHA) may result in structurally and functionally different IgA molecules and may consequently lead to variation in the IgA response to parasitisation. This study involved three sheep breeds (Merino, Polwarth and Corriedale) and a total of 2098 lambs from eight New Zealand farms that underwent a mixed field-challenge of nematode parasites. Faecal

Gastrointestinal nematodes and anthelmintic resistance in Danish goat herds.

The prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in Danish goats and the presence of anthelmintic resistance (AR) in 10 selected herds were investigated during April-September 2012. All Danish herds (n = 137) with 10 or more adult goats were invited to participate, and of these 27 herds met the inclusion criterion of more than 10 young kids never treated with anthelmintics. Questionnaire data on management were collected, and faecal samples from 252 kids were analysed by the McMaster technique. From all herds with a mean faecal egg count (FEC) above 300 eggs per g of faeces, pooled samples were st

Evaluation of OvaCyte for the detection of gastrointestinal parasites in ovine and bovine animals: comparison with traditional flotation techniques.

This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic and analytical performance of OvaCyte, an automated image-based system for the detection of gastrointestinal parasites in ruminants, against traditional flotation techniques. OvaCyte is available in two versions: OvaCyte Plus, which automates egg detection and quantification, and OvaCyte Premium, which incorporates enhanced analysis to differentiate parasite families, genera, and species within strongyles (e.g., Trichostrongylidae, Haemonchus contortus, and Nematodirus spp.). Coccidia are also classified as standard or type B, with the latter specifi

Multiscale epidemiology of gastrointestinal nematode infections in small ruminants: field evidence from Inner Mongolia and a national meta-analysis in China.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) are among the most important parasites constraining small-ruminant production. However, epidemiological evidence in China remains fragmented because existing studies differ substantially in geographic coverage, host species, sampling periods, diagnostic approaches, and ecological settings. METHODS: We applied a multiscale framework integrating a regional survey in Inner Mongolia with a national systematic review and meta-analysis. In the regional survey, 2,084 fecal samples were collected from sheep aged 6-12 months in Ulanqab, Alxa, and Ordos fro

Parasitic control in intensive vs. non-intensive systems--ruminants.

The acquisition and intensity of infection with gastrointestinal nematodes and with Oestrus ovis are compared over 2 years in sheep grazed intensively (26-36 sheep ha-1) or non-intensively (12 sheep ha-1) in the winter rainfall Overberg region of South Africa. Sheep grazing intensively on grass/legume pastures, spray irrigated in summer, acquired massive mixed infections of Trichostrongylus, Haemonchus and Teladorsagia. Infections were fatal for sucking lambs. Lambs from ewes grazed non-intensively on dry land lucerne in winter became infected with Nematodirus and then with Teladorsagia and Tr

Parasites in grizzly bears from the central Canadian Arctic.

Standardized flotation techniques were used to survey 56 grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) fecal samples for parasites. The samples were collected during the spring and autumn of 1995 and 1996 in the central Arctic of the Northwest Territories (Canada). Parasites of the genera Nematodirus, gastrointestinal coccidia, and an unidentified first stage protostrongylid larva are reported for the first time from grizzly bear feces in North America. Parasites of the genera Diphyllobothrium and Baylisascaris also were collected. Prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites were significantly different between th

A comparison of worm burdens in grazing merino sheep and angora goats.

The worm burdens of Angora and Merino wethers grazing with their own species or in a mixed flock were compared over a 4 month period. Based on faecal egg counts and larval differentiation, all animals had similar levels and types of infection at the beginning of the experiment when they were 15 months old. Although the initial infection in sheep and goats was similar, sheep subsequently developed a stronger resistance to worms. Therefore, at the termination of the experiment the sheep had significantly fewer worms of all species, except Nematodirus, than did the goats. There was no significant
