Infundibulocystic basal cell carcinoma: a newly described variant.

A report by Tozawa and Ackerman (Am J Dermatopathol 9(6):474, 1987) upon a distinctive type of basal cell carcinoma with a particular type of follicular differentiation has stimulated lively correspondence in the literature of dermatopathology. The lesion in question presents itself clinically as a basal cell carcinoma on the face and histopathologically as a neoplasm typified by small size, sharp circumscription, and a unique combination of kinds of follicular differentiation, namely, follicular germs and infundibula. The principal point of contention concerning this neoplasm has been whether

Fine-needle aspiration of secondary neoplasms involving the salivary glands. A report of 36 cases.

Metastases or secondary deposits account for 16% of the malignant neoplasms involving the major salivary glands. A correct diagnosis of a secondary neoplasm is important to avoid unnecessary radical surgery and to guide further therapy. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is an excellent noninvasive diagnostic tool for evaluating salivary gland lesions. We reviewed 36 secondary malignant salivary gland neoplasms evaluated by FNAB. Ancillary studies were performed in selected cases. Follow-up included clinical correlation and review of histologic material. For 4 adenocarcinomas, 4 squamous cel

Basal Cell Carcinoma With Calcification: Case Report of Calcifying Basal Cell Carcinoma and Review of Calcinosis Cutis Associated With Basal Cell Carcinoma.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common cutaneous neoplasm. Calcinosis cutis is the deposition of calcium within the dermis. An 80-year-old man presented with a pearly nodule on his left nasal ala; a shave biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of a nodular basal cell carcinoma with calcinosis cutis, which was removed with Mohs micrographic surgery. The incidence of basal cell carcinoma with calcinosis cutis as well as the classification, identification, and potential origin of calcium deposits in basal cell carcinoma are discussed. Basal cell carcinoma can be associated with calcinosis cutis; indeed,

Acrochordon-like basal cell carcinomas in patients with basal cell nevus syndrome.

Basal cell nevus syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by multiple basal cell carcinomas, along with numerous other documented clinical features. Acrochordons (or skin tags) are common benign neoplasms that are appropriately left untreated in most patients. We describe two patients with known BCNS who were found to have multiple BCCs that clinically resembled acrochordons. Our findings support the biopsy of acrochordon-like growths in patients with basal cell nevus syndrome to rule out basal cell carcinoma.

[Hexadactyly of hand and feet in a patient with basal cell nevus syndrome].

A 35-year-old male patient with hexadactyly on the right hand and both feet presented with multiple basal cell carcinomas of the skin. The results of further investigations led to the diagnosis of basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS). The basal cell nevus syndrome (Gorlin-Goltz syndrome) characterized by multiple basal cell carcinomas, odontogenic cysts, skeletal abnormalities and associated neoplasms belongs to the group of genodermatoses. Reviewing the current literature we discuss aspects of the pathogenesis of the basal cell nevus syndrome as well as diagnosis criteria and treatment options.

Multiple metastatic basal cell carcinoma with concurrent metastatic pleomorphic sarcoma in chronic lymphedema area--case report.

Chronic lymphedema presents as interstitial fluid retention due to a failure in the lymphatic system drainage. The affected region becomes more vulnerable immunologically and predisposed to the onset of neoplasms. Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common sort of neoplasm, nevertheless it rarely metastisizes. Sarcomas are malignant mesenchymal neoplasms, locally aggressive, which can spread. Here is reported an infrequent case of multiple basal cell carcinoma, synchronous to a poorly differentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, both spreading to lymph nodes and arising from tissue compromised by chronic

Immunohistochemical expression of ΔNp63 versus pan-p63 in normal and neoplastic feline tissues.

ΔNp63 is an isoform of p63 that plays an essential role in the development and growth of some epithelial tissues. In this study, we investigated the expression of ΔNp63 in normal and neoplastic tissues of cats and compared the results with the expression of pan-p63. Immunohistochemistry for ΔNp63 and pan-p63 was performed in normal tissues from 2 adult cats and in 10 cases each of 22 different types of feline neoplasms. In normal tissues, there was nuclear ΔNp63 immunolabeling in basal cells of stratified squamous, transitional, and pseudostratified columnar epithelia; basal cells of sebaceous

Dermoscopy is useful for the recognition of benign-malignant compound tumours.

The association of two different neoplasms in the same lesion is uncommon and has been reported as collision or compound tumours in the medical literature. In cases where a malignant neoplasm exists in association with a benign lesion it is important to make an accurate diagnosis in order to treat the lesions correctly. Dermoscopy is an in vivo, noninvasive technique that improves the clinical accuracy in diagnosing melanoma and other pigmented skin lesions. We describe the dermoscopic characteristics of various collision or compound tumours that were composed of benign and malignant neoplasms

Nucleolar organizer regions in cutaneous tumours.

A silver colloid technique to identify nucleolar organizer region associated protein (AgNOR) has been applied to 68 cutaneous tumours. Basal cell carcinomas, eccrine tumours, apocrine tumours, and hair follicle tumours had differences in their numbers of AgNORs; these appeared as small black dots in their nuclei. Dermatofibromas and squamous cell carcinomas showed a degree of variability in the number of AgNORs depending on the cellularity of the former and differentiation of the latter. Basal cell carcinomas possessed significantly many more AgNORs per nucleus than the other neoplasms. It is

Descriptive epidemiology of skin cancer in the Swiss Canton of Vaud.

Incidence registration and survival data for non-melanocytic skin neoplasms and cutaneous melanoma have been abstracted from the population-based system of the Cancer Registry of the Swiss Canton of Vaud, which has been operating in a particularly favourable environment, since the large majority of cutaneous lesions resected in the area are examined by a pathologist. Among the 5,712 cases registered, 66.7% were basal-cell carcinomas, 20.6% squamous-cell cancers, 9.3% cutaneous melanomas and 3.4% other miscellaneous histological types. The distribution by histological type did not differ apprec

Dermoscopy of tumours arising in naevus sebaceous: a morphological study of 58 cases.

BACKGROUND: Naevus sebaceous is a congenital hamartoma commonly associated with the development of secondary neoplasms. There are sparse data relating to the dermoscopy of tumours arising in naevus sebaceous. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the dermoscopic features of a large series of neoplasms arising in naevus sebaceous. METHODS: Digital dermoscopic images of 58 histopathologically confirmed cases of secondary neoplasms arising in naevus sebaceous collected from 11 hospitals in Spain, France, Italy and Austria were evaluated for the presence of dermoscopic structures and patterns. RESULTS: The m

Cutaneous collision tumors. An analysis of 69 cases and review of the literature.

The association of two different neoplasms in the same biopsy specimen is not uncommon and has been reported by numerous authors. Some associations may result from involvement of related cell types, however, most are serendipitous. Our study attempted to investigate the nature and types of contiguous or "collision" tumors seen in our dermatopathology service. A retrospective evaluation of approximately 40,000 cutaneous biopsies was performed, yielding 69 examples of collision tumors. Excluded were biphasic lesions of the same cell type (e.g., basosquamous carcinomas or combined nevi). Results

Delayed reconstruction following Mohs' chemosurgery for skin cancers of the head and neck.

The case records of 52 patients with 55 cutaneous neoplasms treated by Mohs' chemosurgery and subsequently reconstructed by plastic surgeons were reviewed to determine if delay between resection and reconstruction adversely affected the outcome of reconstruction. Reconstruction was performed from 5 to 61 days after Mohs' chemosurgery for 45 basal cell carcinomas and 10 other cutaneous neoplasms. There were no complications during the interval between resection and reconstruction. Following reconstruction, minor wound complications occurred in 6% of patients; there were no major complications.

[From gene to disease: basal cell naevus syndrome].

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS, basal cell naevus syndrome, Gorlin syndrome) is an autosomal dominant disorder, caused by mutations in the PTCH gene mapped to chromosome 9q22.3. It is characterised by multiple basal cell carcinomas, keratocysts of the jaws, palmar and plantar pits, cerebral ectopic calcification and several skeletal anomalies. Occasionally, patients with NBCCS develop other neoplasms, particularly medulloblastomas and ovarian fibromas, indicating that the PTCH gene is a tumor-suppressor gene. Early recognition and careful follow-up are needed. Guidelines for manag

Proliferation, apoptosis, and survivin expression in keratinocytic neoplasms and hyperplasias.

The dysregulation of apoptosis occurs in many cutaneous disease states. Several apoptosis inhibitors have been shown elevated in neoplasms and in some inflammatory conditions, but their relation to proliferative and apoptotic states has not been defined. We examined the expression of the apoptosis inhibitor survivin in a panel of keratinocytic neoplasms and hyperproliferative skin lesions using both immunohistochemistry and a newly developed in situ hybridization technique. Proliferation and apoptotic indices were also assessed by immunohistochemical staining for proliferating cell nuclear ant

Cytodiagnosis of Basal Cell Adenoma of Parotid Gland: A Rare Case Report.

Basal cell adenoma is a rare benign neoplastic lesion of the parotid gland, therefore it is rarely diagnosed in preoperative work-up by fine needle aspiration cytology. This distinctive entity being regarded as one of the scarce salivary neoplasms is predominantly perceived in the female population, but is uncommon in young adults. It is extremely challenging to diagnose basaloid tumors predominantly basal cell adenoma of the salivary gland on cytopathology. Therefore present case report describes the fine needle aspiration cytology diagnosis of basal cell adenoma in the left parotid gland in

A case of multiple atypical nevi with co-localized Basal cell carcinomas on the scalp: insight into the pathogenesis.

The authors report a case of a 29-year-old female with multiple lesions on the scalp containing an atypical nevus and a co-localized basal cell carcinoma (BCC) in the same specimen. This is the first description of such a case in the literature. The peculiar co-existence of these 2 neoplasms in the same specimen in multiple skin lesions raises the possibility of an unknown mutation(s) that increases the risk of developing both conditions; and this case illustrates that the signaling pathways mediating the development of atypical nevi may interact with those associated with BCCs. Additionally,

Skin Biopsy in Pediatric Oncology/Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Patients.

The aim of this study was to review the dermatopathological findings in skin biopsy specimens from pediatric oncology and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation patients over a 20-year period. Three hundred fifty-two skin biopsies from 240 patients were reviewed, and the findings were grouped into 6 categories: index neoplasms, nonindex neoplasms, infections, graft-versus-host disease, other treatment complications, and others. Among the index neoplasms identified on skin biopsy, the most common conditions were Langerhans cell histiocytosis (14 patients) and melanoma (7 patients), with other
