The unique anatomy of the ethmoid sinuses makes it difficult to interpret "soft-tissue clouding," especially on plain films. The clinical significance of isolated or generalized soft-tissue disease within ethmoid cells is unclear, and the patterns of bone erosion or remodeling must be relied on in establishing a specific differential diagnosis. Of 400 patients studied, 186 had inflammatory disease and 214 had tumors. Squamous cell carcinomas, metastases, and a few aggressive sarcomas were found almost exclusively to have bone destruction, while 94% of the remaining neoplasms were characterized

Plasma cell neoplasms are characterized by a neoplastic plasma cell lineage which produces a monoclonal immunoglobulin. These neoplasms can present as a single lesion (solitary plasmacytoma) or as multiple lesions (multiple myeloma). Solitary plasmacytomas most frequently occur in bone (plasmacytomas of bone), but can also be found outside bone in soft tissues (extramedullary plasmacytomas).

Three cases of periosteal ganglia of long bones are presented. These lesions are produced by mucoid degeneration and cyst formation of the periosteum to produce external cortical erosion and reactive periosteal new bone. They are not associated with a soft tissue ganglion or an intraosseous lesion. They may radiologically mimic other periosteal lesions or soft tissue neoplasms which erode bone.

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant bone neoplasm in young people. Presentation in non-bone tissues comprises 2 to 5% of all osteosarcomas and less than 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas. On rare occasions it presents as a superficial tumor, making it necessary to make a differential diagnosis with benign entities, such as pyogenic granuloma ossificans, and malignant neoplasms, with sarcomatoid differentiation such as carcinosarcoma and dedifferentiated melanoma. Accurate diagnosis requires correlation of the histological, macroscopic and imaging characteristics of the n

During the last 11 years, 144 nonlymphoreticular neoplasms were diagnosed in exfoliative cytology specimens obtained from patients younger than 17 years of age. Neuroblastoma was the single most common neoplasm (30 cases). Other categories of malignant neoplasms were primary bone tumors (30 cases), soft-tissue sarcomas (25 cases), brain tumors (25 cases) and epithelial neoplasms (7 cases). Of the 780 cytologic specimens, 335 were positive for malignant cells. Serous effusions provided most of the positive specimens from patients with neuroblastoma, germ-cell tumors and bone sarcomas. Exfoliate

PROBLEM: Temporal bone tumours are rare head and neck cancers that may involve both the parotid and the neck. In cases with concomitant temporal bone and parotid tissue involvement, tumour origin determination can be challenging. A tumour with parotid and temporal bone involvement is usually of temporal origin. The tumour may also be a rare parotid neoplasm with intratemporal invasion through the facial nerve, such as adenoid cystic carcinoma. These are slow-growing, yet locally aggressive tumours marked by late-stage distant metastases.
CASE REPORT: We describe a case of parotid adenoid cyst

Bone volume restoration is of particular importance when planning orthopedic treatment based on dental implants. Bone deficiency resulting from tooth loss, injuries, jaw neoplasms, or inflammatory diseases excludes the possibility of implant placement without special preparation. Autograft is the "gold standard" of osteoplastic material, but the limited volume and additional traumatization make it difficult to use. Prospects for the restoration of bone defects are opened by a 3D tissue-engineered osteograft obtained by direct differentiation from a chondrograft in an osteogenic medium in vitro

We report 2 primary renal sarcomas demonstrating BCOR-CCNB3 gene fusions that have recently been identified in undifferentiated round cell sarcomas of bone and soft tissue. These neoplasms occurred in male children aged 11 and 12 years, and both were cystic as a result of entrapment and dilatation of native renal tubules. Both cases were composed of variably cellular bland spindle cells with fine chromatin set in myxoid stroma and separated by a branching capillary vasculature. Both neoplasms demonstrated immunoreactivity for BCOR, cyclin D1, TLE1, and SATB2 in the spindle neoplastic cells and

PURPOSE: Because of their relative rarity, bone and soft tissue lesions of the head and neck region can present a diagnostic challenge to anatomic pathologists who practice in a general surgical pathology model-while novel lesions may be unfamiliar to subspecialty head and neck pathologists.
METHODS: This review focuses on a diagnostically confounding neoplasm that arises in the bone (primary intraosseous rhabdomyosarcoma / FUS::TFCP2-rearranged spindle cell rhabdomyosarcoma) and soft tissue (trans-/de-/undifferentiated melanoma) of the head and neck region-each of which can easily be mistake

OBJECTIVE: The "penumbra sign" on unenhanced T1-weighted MR sequences is thought to be helpful for discriminating subacute osteomyelitis from bone neoplasm. We sought to quantify the sensitivity and specificity of this sign for bone and soft tissue infection in a general referral population.
DESIGN: Clinical coding was used to identify patients admitted to Middlemore Hospital (Auckland, New Zealand) between January 2000 and November 2003 with a diagnosis of either infection or neoplasm of the upper or lower limb who had undergone an MRI scan. One hundred and eighty-three patients were include

Primary tumors of the spine are relatively infrequent lesions compared with metastatic disease, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma. However, when a solitary lesion of the spine occurs, these neoplasms represent an important group of entities for diagnostic consideration. A wide variety of benign neoplasms can involve the spine, including osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, aneurysmal bone cyst, giant cell tumor, enostosis, and osteochondroma. Common primary nonlymphoproliferative malignant neoplasms of the spine include chordoma, chondrosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma or primitive neuroectodermal tumor, and os

We report a 31-year-old woman with a history of low-grade, undifferentiated spindle cell sarcoma of the hand diagnosed at 10 years of age and subsequently amputated. The patient remained under surveillance without recurrence for over 20 years before she presented with multiple new masses in the skin of the head and neck. Biopsies confirmed recurrent sarcoma. Imaging studies revealed metastases within the lungs and peri-pancreatic tissue. Molecular analysis of these lesions showed a TPM3::NTRK1 fusion, and the patient started treatment on larotrectinib, on which she now remains, relapse and rec

A 65-year-old male patient initially presented with a penile tumour, identified as myeloid sarcoma. Subsequent bone marrow investigation revealed the presence of a synchronous plasma cell myeloma, without any evidence of a bone marrow-based myeloproliferative disorder. Although the course of both neoplasms was progressive, with increasing bone marrow involvement by the plasma cell myeloma and cutaneous dissemination of the myeloid sarcoma, both neoplasms remained confined to their original tissue compartments. Different biology of both tumours, including markedly divergent response to therapie

Plasma cell neoplasms have been classified as multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma and extramedullary plasmacytoma. They are usually considered as osteolytic lesions of bone except for the rare occurrence of osteosclerotic lesions. This paper describes the first reported osteosclerotic plasmacytoma of the maxillary bone and orbital floor. The difficulties in establishing a diagnosis and the relationship to other plasma cell neoplasms are discussed. Osteosclerotic plasmacytomas are a rare variant of plasma cell tumors which usually produce osteolytic lesions rather than bony sclerosis. Sixty

Metastatic cancer is among the most frequent causes of skeletal pain associated with a destructive bone lesion or pathologic fracture in adults. Patients with a known primary carcinoma should undergo systematic evaluation and monitoring to determine the extent of skeletal disease and risk of pathologic fracture. Patients without a known primary carcinoma who have symptoms consistent with metastatic disease of the skeleton present a diagnostic dilemma. Plain radiographs may not reveal a metastatic lesion until extensive marrow replacement has occurred. Bone scans are more sensitive than radiogr

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac neoplasms are rare and the vast majority are metastatic in origin. Symptoms of cardiac neoplasms (primary or metastatic) usually appear late in the course of the disease and are often ignored because of the more severe effects of the primary malignant disorder or its therapy. Consequently, cardiac neoplasms, especially metastatic ones, are often not discovered until autopsy.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the incidence of cardiac neoplasms at autopsy and to determine the sites of origins of metastatic cardiac neoplasms.
METHODS: The pathology records from consecutive autopsies p

T-lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma is a malignant neoplasm derived from T-cell precursors. These neoplasms can present initially as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) involving bone marrow or lymphoblastic lymphoma (LBL) involving lymph nodes, mediastinum or other extramedullary sites. Bone marrow and extramedullary tissue involvement frequently coexist. In this review, we begin with a short review of the clinical and morphologic features of ALL/LBL. We then focus on the immunophenotypic features of T-ALL/LBL. We delineate lineage-defining T-cell markers and immaturity-associated markers for th

The histology of sauropod long bones often appears uniform and conservative along their evolutionary tree. One of the main aspects of their bone histology is to exhibit a fibrolamellar complex in the cortex of their long bones. Here, we report another bone tissue, the radial fibrolamellar bone (RFB), in the outer cortex of the humeri of a young adult cf. Isanosaurus (Early to Late Jurassic, Thailand) and an adult Spinophorosaurus nigerensis (Early to Middle Jurassic, Niger) that do not exhibit any pathological feature on the bone surface. Its location within the cortex is unexpected, because R

Plasma cell neoplasms may present in the bone as monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance, solitary plasmacytoma of bone, multifocal plasma cell neoplasm of bones known as multiple myeloma (MM) and in soft tissues as extramedullary plasmacytoma. MM is a malignant disease of atypical plasma cells characterized by their multifocal proliferation and production of monoclonal immunoglobulins. Often, the initial clinical feature of this disease is subtle and requires trained primary health-care providers to identify this illness and put together a suitable treatment plan. This case report
