Second primary neoplasms in 633,964 cancer patients in Sweden, 1958-1996.

The Swedish Family-Cancer Database was used to analyze concordant (same site) and discordant (different site) second primary neoplasms in 633,964 cancer patients diagnosed from 1958 to 1996. Cases of second malignant neoplasms were extracted from the Database if the diagnosis date of the first and second cancer differed by at least 1 month. The expected numbers of cancers were obtained by applying site-, sex-, age-, period-, residence- and socioeconomic level-specific rates in the corresponding population in the Database to the appropriate person-years at risk. The standardized incidence ratio

Cartilaginous choristoma on the lateral surface of the tongue: a case report.

A cartilaginous choristoma is a nonneoplastic nodular growth of histologically normal cartilage in an abnormal site. This report describes a case of a cartilaginous choristoma on the lateral surface of the tongue in a 65-year-old woman. The entire lesion was excised, and histologic examination revealed mature cartilaginous tissue surrounded by dense connective tissue. Choristomas are rare findings in the oral cavity, easily confused with proliferative processes or soft tissue neoplasms. Nevertheless, choristomas may be part of the differential diagnosis for lesions similar to the one described

Esthetic management of mucogingival defects after total excision in a case of pyogenic granuloma.

PURPOSE: Pyogenic granuloma is a relatively rare hyperplastic lesion of the oral tissues. Clinically it is heterogeneous and can be similar to malignant epithelial and mesenchymal neoplasms. The treatment of choice is the surgical excision of the lesion. This approach often results in unpleasant gingival defects, especially when the pyogenic granuloma is located in the esthetic zone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This report describes the clinical and histological findings of pyogenic granuloma diagnosed in the maxilla of a 24-year-old female, as well as the successful treatment of the mucogingival

[Endoscopic electroexcision of benign urethral tumors in children].

Endoscopic treatment was performed in 17 boys aged 4 months-16 years with benign new growths of the posterior urethra: false polyps (n = 11), fibroepithelial polyps (congenital--4, acquired--1), fetal rabdomyoma of the urethra and urinary bladder (n = 1). Acquired fibroepithelial polyp was detected in a patient who previously had resection and urethral anastomosis for posttraumatic stricture and long-term preventive catheterization. A leading symptom of the disease in 8 patients was infravesical obstruction. Most complete diagnostic information was provided by urethroscopy. All the patients we

Thymic carcinoma presenting with overlap polyarthritis and myositis: A rare paraneoplastic syndrome in childhood.

Thymic tumors are very rare neoplasms in children and account for less than 1% of mediastinal tumors in pediatric patients. One-third of the pediatric patients present with symptoms related to the compression of the tumor mass on the surrounding anatomic structures, and paraneoplastic syndromes such as myasthenia gravis, pure red cell aplasia, acquired hypogammaglobulinemia, and connective tissue disorders, which rarely occur in children with thymic tumors. Herein, we report a case of thymic carcinoma mimicking the symptoms of a connective tissue disease with symmetrical polyarthritis accompan

Fibroepithelial Polyp of the Vagina in Pregnancy: A Case Report.

Fibroepithelial polyps of the Vagina (FEPV) are mucosal polypoid lesions with a connective tissue core covered by a benign squamous epithelium. They are thought to be rare as only a few cases are reported in the literature. Fibroepithelial stromal polyps are mesenchymal neoplasms that can occur in the vagina, vulva, and even on the cervix. These fibroepithelial stromal polyps have also been reported in rare sites such as breast and labia.

Stereological study of tissue compartments of the human spleen.

Morphometric reports on animal and human spleen are very few and no studies have been carried out using stereological methods to investigate all of the tissue compartments of the human spleen. Eighteen samples of spleens, which were either surgically removed after traumatic injury or during treatment for early stage carcinoma or gastric ulcer, were investigated. The point-counting method was used to study the volume densities of the following tissue compartments: red pulp, perifollicular zone, white pulp (this tissue compartment was divided in two subcompartments: follicles and periarteriolar

Sonographic findings of a large vulvar lipoma.

Lipomas of the vulva are rare benign tumors that consist of mature fat cells often interspersed with strands of fibrous connective tissue. They arise from the vulvar fatty pads and present as soft, multilobulated subcutaneous neoplasms. Histological examination reveals a thin capsule surrounding a lobular proliferation of lipocytes. Liposarcomas of the vulva have been described rarely. We present the sonographic findings of a large lipoma of the vulva, and demonstrate the contribution of topical application of a high-frequency transvaginal transducer in depicting lobular structural features, c

Fibroepithelial Stromal Polyp of the Vulva: Case Report and Review of Potential Histologic Mimickers.

Vulvar tumors arising from submucosal connective tissue, some of which exhibit hormonal responsiveness, have many clinical and histologic overlapping characteristics. We present a case of a fibroepithelial stromal polyp arising from the vulva of a 22-year-old female. We review the differential diagnosis with an emphasis on distinguishing features of these uncommon neoplasms. Accurate diagnosis is essential as the extent of surgical resection and risk of local recurrence varies for these tumors.

Risk of second cancer after lymphohematopoietic neoplasm.

People living with lymphohematopoietic neoplasms (LHNs) are known to have increased risks of second cancer; however, the incidence of second cancers after LHNs has not been studied extensively in Australia. The Australian Cancer Database was used to analyze site-specific risk of second primary cancer after LHNs in 127,707 patients diagnosed between 1983 and 2005. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) were calculated using population rates. Overall, patients with an LHN had nearly twice the risk of developing a second cancer compared to the Australian population. Among 40,321 patients with non-H

Diagnostic histochemistry of soft tissue lesions.

Histochemical methods (HM) were, at one time, extensively used in all facets of anatomic pathology, including analysis of soft tissue lesions. That situation has changed with the advent of other adjunctive procedures, but HM still do contribute meaningfully to the evaluation of several tumefactive conditions in the soft tissue. This brief review considers selected neoplastic, quasineoplastic, and pseudoneoplastic lesions in that category, with emphasis on their histochemical properties.

Essential thrombocythemia and aortic dissection, causal or incidental association?

Only few cases of vascular dissection and essential thrombocythemia association have been reported. To the best of our knowledge, we reported the second case of aortic dissection and essential thrombocythemia association in a 60-year-old man with positive JAK2V617F mutation who had no history of hypertension or connective tissue disorders. Through this case, we discussed the eventual existence of a causal relationship between the two conditions. We also suggested the use of hydroxyurea as a prevention treatment of thrombosis in myeloproliferative neoplasms.

Establishment, characterization and functional testing of two novel ex vivo extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMC) cell models.

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (EMC) is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm of uncertain differentiation as classified by the WHO Classification of Tumours 2020. Although often associated with pronlonged survival, EMC has high rates of distant recurrences and disease-associated death. EMCs are translocation sarcomas and harbor in > 90% of the cases an NR4A3 rearrangement. The molecular consequences of the NR4A3 gene fusions are not yet fully elucidated as well-characterized ex vivo cell models for EMC are lacking. Patient-derived ex vivo models are important and essential tools for investiga

Extraskeletal cartilaginous, osseous, and chordoid tumors in children and adolescents.

Extraskeletal cartilaginous, osseous, and chordoid tumors are extraordinarily rare in children and adolescents. These lesions are diagnostically challenging due to their rarity and their overlap with metastatic osteosarcoma, reactive or metabolic calcifying and bone-forming masses, various pseudosarcomatous proliferations such as myositis ossificans, and other rare genetic or metabolic disorders. This article reviews the clinicopathologic features and differential diagnosis of extraskeletal cartilaginous, osseous, and chordoid neoplasms in the first two decades of life and highlights the use o

Rare solitary fibrous tumor of the stomach: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumors are rare soft tissue tumors of submesothelial origin and variable malignant potential. The most common localization is pleural, whereas only 0.6% are of extrapleural localization. Solitary fibrous tumor of the peritoneum, especially of gastric serosa is an extremely rare form of this tumor. CASE REPORT: We presented a 65-year-old female patient with solitary fibrous tumor of the stomach. Histopathological analysis of removed tissue showed the presence of tumor tissue built of spindle cells, elongated nuclei with moderately abundant cytoplasm. Cells were i
