Cartilaginous choristoma on the lateral surface of the tongue: a case report.

A cartilaginous choristoma is a nonneoplastic nodular growth of histologically normal cartilage in an abnormal site. This report describes a case of a cartilaginous choristoma on the lateral surface of the tongue in a 65-year-old woman. The entire lesion was excised, and histologic examination revealed mature cartilaginous tissue surrounded by dense connective tissue. Choristomas are rare findings in the oral cavity, easily confused with proliferative processes or soft tissue neoplasms. Nevertheless, choristomas may be part of the differential diagnosis for lesions similar to the one described

Endobronchial solitary fibrous tumors: An enigma for diagnosis.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms constituting less than 2% of all soft tissue tumors. They typically originate in the thoracic cavity, mainly in the pleura, but can also occur in other various sites such as lung parenchyma, pericardium, and bronchus. In this study, a 49-year-old non-smoking female with a history of allergies presented to our pulmonary clinic with a chronic cough. An explorative bronchoscopy revealed an intrabronchial mass in the left superior bronchi, and a 68 Ga-DOTATOC positron emission computed tomography suggested a carcinoid tumor. Subsequent

Diagnostic histochemistry of soft tissue lesions.

Histochemical methods (HM) were, at one time, extensively used in all facets of anatomic pathology, including analysis of soft tissue lesions. That situation has changed with the advent of other adjunctive procedures, but HM still do contribute meaningfully to the evaluation of several tumefactive conditions in the soft tissue. This brief review considers selected neoplastic, quasineoplastic, and pseudoneoplastic lesions in that category, with emphasis on their histochemical properties.

Immunohistochemical identification of tumours of adipocytic differentiation using an antibody to aP2 protein.

AIM: To determine whether aP2 expression is a useful diagnostic marker in soft tissue tumour pathology. METHODS: A polyclonal antibody to aP2 was used to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of this protein in benign and malignant tumours of adipocytic differentiation and a wide variety of other neoplasms. RESULTS: aP2 was only expressed by lipoblasts (in all types of liposarcoma and in lipoblastomatosis) and by brown fat cells (in both hibernomas and normal periadrenal fetal fat). Other benign adipose tissue tumours and malignant connective tissue or epithelial tumours were distin

GLI1-Altered Mesenchymal Tumors With ACTB or PTCH1 Fusion: A Molecular and Clinicopathologic Analysis.

Mesenchymal tumors with GLI1 fusions or amplifications have recently emerged as a distinctive group of neoplasms. The terms GLI1-altered mesenchymal tumor or GLI1-altered soft tissue tumor serve as a nosological category, although the exact boundaries/criteria require further elucidation. We examined 16 tumors affecting predominantly adults (median age: 40 years), without sex predilection. Several patients had tumors of longstanding duration (>10 years). The most common primary site was soft tissue (n = 9); other sites included epidural tissue (n = 1), vertebra (n = 1), tongue (n = 1), hard pa

Primary soft tissue chondroma of the posterior mediastinum: a rare case report and literature review.

A chondroma is a common benign cartilaginous tumor. However, a primary soft tissue chondroma of the posterior mediastinum is very rare. We herein report a case involving a 51-year-old man with a posterior mediastinal mass. The mass was dissected by thoracoscopy through the eighth intercostal space. Pathological examination led to a definitive diagnosis of a primary mediastinal chondroma with no criteria of malignancy. Preoperative diagnosis of a posterior mediastinal soft tissue chondroma is not easy because of its rarity and lack of typical features other than calcification. When a posterior

Connective tissue tumors.

Connective tissue consists of collagen, elastic fibers and ground substances produced by fibrocytes. These cells are usually spindle-shaped with slender nuclei and bipolar cytoplasmic extensions. Apart from labeling for vimentin and variable reactivity for factor XIIIa and CD34, fibrocytes are immunonegative. Electron microscopy reveals prominent endoplasmic reticulum, but is otherwise indistinct. Lesions with fibrocytic differentiation can be divided into five categories: scars, keloids, dermatofibromas, nodular fasciitis, and superficial fibromatoses are inflammatory lesions. Thereby, dermat

Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans of the Forehead: Case Report of a Rare Entity and Review of Literature.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma originating from fibroblasts in the dermal connective tissue, comprising approximately 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas. While most cases involve the trunk and extremities, only 10%-15% occur in the cephalic region, representing less than 1% of all head and neck neoplasms. DFSP is notable for its high propensity for local recurrence following surgical excision and its low metastatic potential. We report a case of recurrent DFSP of the forehead extending to the anterior wall of the left frontal sinus, without brain involvement,

Management of Primary Soft Tissue Tumors of the Chest Wall.

Primary chest wall tumors are rare and represent a challenging clinical entity. Preoperative work-up includes a thorough history, radiographic imaging, and a biopsy approach that does not make a future definitive resection more difficult. Treatment decisions are based on tumor histology, stage, local aggressiveness, and responsiveness to chemotherapy and radiation. Wide excision is the foundation of treatment of most malignant primary chest wall tumors. The role of radiation therapy in the neoadjuvant or adjuvant setting is to reduce local recurrence. The use of adjuvant chemotherapy is more c

Clinical Characteristics of Malignant Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor Causing Tumor-Induced Osteomalacia.

CONTEXT: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome usually caused by oversecretion of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) from a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT). PMTs are usually benign neoplasms but some of them show malignant characteristics. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical characteristics of benign and malignant PMTs inducing TIO. METHODS: On March 31, 2023, we performed a systematic review of individual patient data analysis in Medline, Google Scholar, Google book, and Cochrane Library using the terms "tumor induced osteomalacia,

[Soft tissue neoplasms--progress and limits of pathologico-anatomic diagnosis].

Current classifications of soft tissue tumors are based principally on the histogenetic type of the tumor thereby abandoning descriptive terms such as spindle cell sarcoma, round cell sarcoma etc. Insight into the histogenesis of a number of soft tissue tumor types has been gained from electron microscopical studies. In addition, these studies provided valuable data to establish certain neoplasms as tumor entities. Thus, the histogenesis of clear cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses has been traced to melanocytes, and it is now universally accepted that biphasic synovial sarcoma consists of

Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumors in the Head and Neck Demonstrate a Broad Clinical and Morphologic Spectrum.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour (PMT) is a rare tumour that occurs in bone or soft tissue and is associated with production of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) leading to tumor-induced osteomalacia. We report three cases of PMT involving the head and neck that highlight the broad spectrum of clinical and histologic features of PMT. One of these lesions from the hard palate demonstrated an admixture of epithelial and mesenchymal elements, a feature that can pose a diagnostic challenge. The diagnostic utility of immunohistochemistry including FGF23, somatostatin receptor 2A, SATB2, ERG and CD
