Undifferentiated sarcoma arising from fibrous dysplasia in a young adult.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a skeletal disorder characterized by the replacement of normal bone by fibrous tissue. Malignant transformation of FD is extremely rare and has been reported in both monostotic and polyostotic forms of FD. The most frequently reported malignant transformation is osteosarcoma. Among malignant bone tumors, spindle cell sarcomas are uncommon and difficult to diagnose. This report presents the case of a 30-year-old woman with an unusual presentation of a malignant undifferentiated spindle cell neoplasm secondary to fibrous dysplasia. The clinical features, radiological fi

Nodular and diffuse fibrous proliferation of the penis and tunica vaginalis.

Fibrous benign proliferations of the testis and paratesticular tissues are an uncommon and heterogeneous group of lesions that can mimic true neoplasms. Among them, those considered to be reactive proliferations have been included in the category of fibrous pseudotumors and are often associated with trauma, hydrocele, or infection. We report 2 cases of nodular and diffuse fibrous proliferation. This condition is part of the spectrum of reactive benign fibrous lesions and has previously been described in the testicular tunics and paratesticular region only. One of our 2 cases had the peculiarit

[Localized fibrous tumor of the pleura. 2 case reports and differential diagnoses].

The localized fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare neoplasms, also known as "benign pleural fibromas" or "localized mesotheliomas", but those names are inaccurate. The tumors are composed of undifferentiated mesenchymal cells, intermediate and differentiated fibroblasts and collagenous interstitial tissue. Their origin is normally the submesothelial layer of the visceral pleura. Mesothelial differentiation is not present. The grading of malignancy doesn't correlate with final outcome, adequacy of surgical excision being the most important factor. This neoplasm may recur but retain its basical

Calcifying fibrous tumor of the adrenal gland.

Calcifying fibrous tumor is an uncommon entity with distinctive pathologic features. Most calcifying fibrous tumors involve the peripheral soft tissues or serosal surfaces, with reports of visceral examples of this lesion being extremely limited. We report the clinical and pathologic features of an unusual case of calcifying fibrous tumor occurring in the adrenal gland of a 32-year-old woman. Microscopically, the lesion was well circumscribed and composed of dense, poorly cellular collagenous tissue, scattered spindle cells, an inflammatory infiltrate consisting of plasma cells and lymphocytes

Diffuse fibrous pseudotumor of the testicular tunics associated with an inflamed hydrocele.

Fibrous pseudotumors of the testicular tunics and paratesticular soft tissue are uncommon lesions. They typically arise as painless scrotal masses that may be associated with a hydrocele or history of trauma or infection. Although these lesions are clinically worrisome for a malignant neoplasm, they are thought to be reactive in nature, since they are composed of dense fibrous tissue with interspersed bland fibroblasts and myofibroblasts and mixed inflammatory cells. Once excised, these lesions behave in a benign fashion. Typically, these masses are multinodular, but in rare cases they are dif

Desmoplastic fibroblastoma presenting as a parotid tumour: a case report and review of the literature.

Desmoplastic fibroblastomas (DFs) are rare fibrous soft tissue tumours that usually arise in subcutaneous tissue or skeletal muscle in a variety of anatomical sites. These lesions most frequently present as painless, slow-growing mobile masses. A case of DF is described in a 47-year-old man who presented with a painless right parotid mass of 2 months duration. At surgery, the lesion was attached to the tail of the right parotid gland. Histopathological examination demonstrated a fibrous lesion comprising spindled and stellate shaped fibroblasts with focal myxoid stromal change. The features we

[Non-epithelial tumors of the large intestine].

UNLABELLED: Colorectal cancer may arise from any kind of tissue constituting normal wall of the large intestine, however, in majority of cases, it is of epithelial origin. Endocrine, mesenchymal neoplasms and non-granulomatic lymphomas belong to rarely occurring cancers of the large intestine. Mesenchymal neoplasms may derive from muscles, nervous system, fibrous connective tissue, fat tissue and from blood and lymphatic vessels. The paper presents 3 cases of non-epithelial neoplasms of the large intestine (myosarcoma and 2 myomas). All cancers concerned women older than 50 years (mean age 64.

Brenner tumors.

Brenner tumors are rare ovarian neoplasms composed of ovarian transition cells surrounded by dense fibrous tissue. Most of them are small tumors (<2 cm), detected incidentally in asymptomatic women. Its predominantly fibrous content results in relatively low signal on T2 weighted images, establishing differential diagnosis with ovarian fibroma and thecoma. Their imaging features are very similar, the differentiation is based on secondary characteristics, such as signs or symptoms of estrogen excess and the presence of a second ovarian neoplasm, which has been reported in up to 30% of patients

Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Parotid Gland: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumor is a rare, mesenchymal neoplasm that has been reported in numerous sites. Occurrence in the parotid gland is exceedingly rare. CASE REPORT: A 53-year-old man with a 2 cm solitary fibrous tumor of the left parotid gland, that was observed clinically and operatively and thought to be a neoplasm arising from Stensen's duct, is described. A pre-operative CT scan demonstrated a well-circumscribed, solid, avidly-enhancing nodule superficial to the masseter muscle, deep to the platysma, and intimately associated with the parotid duct. Connective tissue tumors.

Connective tissue consists of collagen, elastic fibers and ground substances produced by fibrocytes. These cells are usually spindle-shaped with slender nuclei and bipolar cytoplasmic extensions. Apart from labeling for vimentin and variable reactivity for factor XIIIa and CD34, fibrocytes are immunonegative. Electron microscopy reveals prominent endoplasmic reticulum, but is otherwise indistinct. Lesions with fibrocytic differentiation can be divided into five categories: scars, keloids, dermatofibromas, nodular fasciitis, and superficial fibromatoses are inflammatory lesions. Extracranial metastasizing solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) of meninges: histopathological features of a case with long-term follow-up.

Extrapleural solitary fibrous tumors are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms frequently observed in middle-aged adults and are classified, according to the WHO classification of soft tissue tumors, as part of the hemangiopericytoma tumor group. However, these two entities remain separated in the WHO classification of tumors of the central nervous system. In fact, meningeal solitary fibrous tumors are believed to be benign lesion and only in a minority of cases local relapses have been described, although detailed survival clinical studies on solitary fibrous tumors of meninges are rare. In contrast

[Riedel thyroiditis: two cases report].

Riedel thyroiditis is a benign disease, which is often self-limited. Examinations, such as CT and histologic diagnosis can distinguish it from malignant neoplasms and hashimoto's thyroiditis. Riedel thyroiditis is an uncommon form of chronic thyroiditis in which the thyroid gland is replaced by fibrous tissue. It can be cured by surgery and medicine.

Solitary fibrous tumor of the breast: a case report and review of the literature.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms that can be benign or malignant. SFTs have been most often documented in the pleura. Recently, involvement of extrapleural sites such as the abdomen, musculoskeletal soft tissue, upper respiratory tract, mediastinum, and head and neck were reported. Less than 15 cases of SFT of the breast have been reported. Here, we report a case of a pathologically proven SFT of the breast and review the literature on the radiologic findings. US imaging showed an oval, well-circumscribed, hypoechoic solid mass. A solitary fibrous tumor of the brea

Surgical management of endobronchial solitary fibrous tumors.

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare neoplasms with both benign and malignant behaviors that are not reliably predicted by histologic findings. We report the case of a 55-year-old woman with recurrent pneumonias whose left mainstem bronchus was occluded by a 2.1- x 1.4-cm endobronchial mass that extended extraluminally into the subcarina. The mass was tissue diagnosed to be a solitary fibrous tumor preoperatively, and was completely resected by sleeve resection of the left mainstem bronchus with lung preservation. This report describes the challenging surgical management of an infreq

Intrapulmonary location of benign solitary fibrous tumor.

Intrapulmonary solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are sporadic mesenchymal neoplasms that typically arise from visceral or parietal pleura. While accounting for <5% of all pleural tumors, SFTs are known to occur in nearly all bodily organs, including nasopharynx, bladder, prostate, soft tissue of neck, buttocks, extremities, and abdominal wall. Such tumors have been previously designated localized fibrous mesothelioma or pleural fibroma. SFTs have no genetic basis and are unrelated to environmental factors such as tobacco smoking or asbestos exposure. Herein, we describe a 24-year-old woman whose

Epidermal inclusion cyst embedded in benign fibrous histiocytic lesion with prominent epithelioid morphology.

Benign fibrous histiocytoma also known as dermatofibroma is one of the common mesenchymal neoplasms. It commonly develops in young adult with female predominance and predilection for the extremities, particularly lower extremities. Implantation of epidermis in the dermis or subcutaneous tissues may lead to the formation of epidermal inclusion cyst, which is the most common type of epithelial cyst. Development of epidermal inclusion cyst within a benign fibrous histiocytoma is a rare occurrence. This is a unique case of two unrelated lesions.

Thymofibrolipoma in two dogs.

Thymolipomas are unusual benign neoplasms composed of mature adipose and thymic tissue that represent less than 10% of all thymic tumours in man. A thymofibrolipoma is a histological variant of thymolipoma in which there is an additional abundance of fibrous connective tissue. Thymolipoma has been reported previously in one dog and one cat, but thymofibrolipoma has never been described. This report documents the clinical and pathological features of two cases of canine thymofibrolipoma.

Solitary fibrous tumor of the vagina.

We report of a solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the vagina and discuss the differential diagnosis. This is the first SFT documented, to our knowledge. SFTs should be included in the differential diagnosis of fibroblastic, myofibroblastic, and neural lesions of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and mucosa and can be distinguished from other spindle cell neoplasms at those sites.

Giant fibrous tumor misdiagnosed as traumatic hemothorax.

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura are neoplasms of the mesenchymal tissue of the pleural mesothelium. The most frequent symptoms are dyspnea, coughing and chest pain. A 45-year-old female patient presented after a thoracic contusion. A radio-opaque image was evidenced on chest X-ray. At the initial hospital, a hemorrhagic fluid was aspirated at thoracocentesis and the patient was transferred to our hospital with diagnosis of traumatic hemothorax. A thoracic CT showed a tumoral formation filling two-thirds of the left hemithorax. The transthoracic biopsy finding was compatible with a fibrou
