Prolonged expression of the c-kit receptor in germ cells of intersex fetal testes.

Stem cell factor (SCF) and its receptor Kit encoded by the c-kit proto-oncogene are crucial for the development and migration of primordial germ cells in rodents. The expression of Kit has been examined immunohistochemically in gonads obtained from five specimens of fetal tissues with intersex conditions which included 45,X/46,XY mosaicism; androgen insensitivity syndrome; and 46,XY/iso(p)Y mosaicism. Individuals with such disorders of sexual differentiation and Y-chromosome material carry a very high risk of developing testicular neoplasms. Fetal testicular germ cells of the intersex subjects

Gynandroblastoma of the ovary.

A left ovarian gynandroblastoma in a 24-year-old woman was clinically manifest by prolonged (7 years) amenorrheas interrupted by metrorrhagies, with moderate hypertrichosis is presented. An important urinary elimination of estrogens (1.500 gamma/24 h) and of 17-ketosteroids (25 gamma/24 h) with normal 17-OH and gonadotrophins were evidenced. The microscopic examination of the operated tumor showed structures of a granulous tumor intermingled with arrhenoblastomatous structures. Restoration of the patient's sexual biological conditions.

Molecular and Immunohistochemical Analysis of Mucinous Cystic Neoplasm of the Liver.

OBJECTIVES: Mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver is characterized by neoplastic mucinous and/or biliary epithelium surrounded by ovarian-type stroma. Immunohistochemical studies have shown that the ovarian-type stroma expresses estrogen receptor, suggesting potential hormonal responsiveness. The molecular biology of mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver remains poorly studied. METHODS: Transcriptome sequencing and immunohistochemistry were performed on a series of mucinous cystic neoplasms. RESULTS: Mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver exhibited significantly increased RNA expression of ov

The World Health Organization 2016 classification of testicular non-germ cell tumours: a review and update from the International Society of Urological Pathology Testis Consultation Panel.

The World Health Organization (WHO) released a new tumour classification for the genitourinary system in early 2016 after consensus by pathologists with expertise in these organs. It utilized the framework of the 2004 classification, and incorporated the most up-to-date information concerning these tumours. In testicular tumours, the majority of the changes occurred in the nomenclature and classification of germ cell tumours; however, several modifications were also made for non-germ cell tumours. Among sex cord-stromal tumours, sclerosing Sertoli cell tumour (SCT) is no longer recognized as a

Anastomosing hemangioma: a current update on clinical, pathological and imaging features.

Anastomosing hemangioma (AH) is a rare, benign vascular neoplasm with distinctive histopathology and characteristic tumor distribution. AHs show marked proclivity to involve the kidneys, gonads and the retroperitoneal soft tissues; kidney is the most common target site often in the context of end stage renal disease. Recent studies have identified activating mutations of GNA genes that drive the molecular pathogenesis of AHs. AH appears as a solitary, well-circumscribed, hypervascular tumor that charters a benign course with an excellent prognosis. The purpose of this article is to provide a c

Congenital testicular juvenile granulosa cell tumor in a neonate with X/XY mosaicism.

A congenital sex cord-stromal tumor of the testis with morphologic features of juvenile granulosa cell tumor is reported. The tumor occurred in an abdominal testis of a newborn infant with an X/XY karyotype and ambiguous genitalia and presented as a partially cystic mass associated with ascites. Histologically the tumor was comprised of an admixture of solid, cellular, poorly differentiated lobules mimicking graafian follicles. Residual hypoplastic testicular tissue was present at the periphery. This is the 19th reported case of testicular juvenile granulosa cell tumor and the fourth with an u

The risk of neoplasm associated with dysgenetic testes in prepubertal and pubertal/adult patients.

INTRODUCTION: In patients with Y-chromosome in the karyotype, partial gonadal dysgenesis and disorders of male reproductive sex organs development are usually resected in childhood because of the high risk of germ cell tumours (GCT). In patients with Y-chromosome, complete gonadal dysgenesis and female genitalia gonadectomy is performed markedly later. However, due to the relatively low number of adult patients with preserved dysgenetic gonads, the true risk of neoplasm is unknown. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of neoplasia in dysgenetic gonads of children and adults with

Primary mature adrenal teratoma in infant.

Teratomas are neoplasms of the embryonic tissues that typically arise in the gonadal and sacrococcygeal regions. Primary adrenal teratoma are extremely rare and only few cases were published in literature. Teratomas contain more than one embryonic germ cell layer, mostly elements derived from ectoderm and least frequently from endoderm. Though these tumors are mostly benign, malignant transformation may occur. Treatment includes surgical removal. We report a rare case of a primary mature retroperitoneal teratoma in an infant with liver metastasis. Imaging modality CT and MRI were useful in dia

Retroperitoneal mature cystic teratoma arising from intra-abdominal undescended testis in an adult.

Teratomas are a type of germ-cell tumour which may contain embryological tissues from more than one germ-cell layer, usually occurring in the gonads. Primary retroperitoneal teratomas account for 1-11% of retroperitoneal neoplasms and are most commonly found in neonates and young adults. In the clinical literature, retroperitoneal mature cystic teratoma arising from an intra-abdominal undescended testis in adult males has been very rarely reported. We report a case of surgically proven retroperitoneal mature cystic teratoma arising from an intra-abdominal undescended testis in an adult male by

Adenocarcinomatous transformation of intracranial germ cell tumors.

Germ cell tumors arising in the gonads, retroperitoneum, and mediastinum are occasionally overgrown by cancers of somatic type that are widely assumed to derive from the "malignant transformation" of included teratomatous tissues. These malignant, nongerminal neoplasms are typically chemoresistant, and their emergence is often associated with fatal treatment failure. Only rare, well-documented reports of sarcomatous transformation complicating intracranial germ cell neoplasia are on record. We describe two nongerminomatous germ cell tumors of the pineal region that underwent transformation int

Splenogonadal fusion.

Splenogonadal fusion (SGF) is a rare congenital non-malignant anomaly characterized by fusion of splenic tissue to the gonad, and can be continuous or discontinuous. Very few cases have been diagnosed preoperatively, and many patients who present with testicular swelling undergo unnecessary orchiectomy under the suspicion of testicular neoplasm. A 16-year-old boy presented with a left scrotal mass and underwent total excision of a 1.6-cm tumor without damaging the testis, epididymis or its accompanying vessels. Pathologic examination revealed SFG (discontinuous type). If clinically suspected b

Expression of the Wilms' tumour gene WT1 in the developing human and in paediatric renal tumours: an immunohistochemical study.

AIMS: The Wilms' tumour gene (WT1) product is expressed during the development of the urogenital system. This study was undertaken to evaluate four anti-WT1 antibodies and use the most specific one to examine the expression of WT1 in formalin fixed, paraffin wax embedded tissues from human embryos, fetuses, and paediatric renal neoplasms. METHODS: The antibodies were assessed on paraffin sections of fetal kidney and by western blotting. Immunohistochemical techniques were optimised and performed on a range of embryonic, fetal, and infant tissues from 35 days post-conception to three months of

Intrascrotal tumors in the older male.

Although the greatest incidence of testicular neoplasms is in the age group 20 to 35.9% of all intrascrotal tumors occur in males over 60. They may be classified into four major groups based on the tissue origin of the tumor. The most common group comprising 50% are lymphoreticular neoplasms or lymphomas. They occur in both blacks and whites, result in a diffuse enlargement of the testis and commonly involve the epididymis and cord. Prognosis is poor and survival is usually less than two years. Germ cell tumors comprise 25% and the tumors are usually large. Most of them are the classical semin

Activin-βC modulates gonadal, but not adrenal tumorigenesis in the inhibin deficient mice.

Activins and inhibins are involved in the regulation of several biological processes, including reproduction, development and fertility. Deregulation of the inhibin/activin signaling pathway has been implicated in the progression of reproductive and adrenal cancers. Deletion of the inhibin α-subunit results in up-regulation of the circulating levels of activins and this leads to the development of sex-cord stromal tumors followed by a cancer associated-cachexia in mice. When gonadectomy is performed, development of adrenocortical carcinomas is observed. We previously showed that overexpression

Diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopy for the adult cryptorchid testicle.

Laparoscopy can be utilized in the management of male patients with impalpable gonads. However, there have been few reports of its application in the management of adult men with cryptorchidism. Fourteen adult men with 15 undescended testicles were referred to our urology department over 6 years. Eight testicles from seven men could not be localized clinically or radiographically to the inguinal canal. Laparoscopy was utilized to assess for the presence and location of the gonad and to perform orchiectomy when testicular tissue was encountered. The average age of the seven men undergoing lapar

Adrenal Rests in the Uro-genital Tract of an Adult Population.

Ectopic adrenal rests are a rare condition which can be found in various sites, generally in the retroperitoneum or pelvis along the path of gonadal descent. Their real prevalence is unknown. Males are more commonly affected, at least in the pediatric age. Adrenal rests are usually clinically silent and incidentally found in surgical samples, mostly in the pediatric population, and rarely in adults. With the aim of increasing knowledge and estimating the prevalence of ectopic adrenocortical tissue in the adult population, 44 adrenal rests in the urogenital tract of 40 adults are described. The

A case of continuous-type splenogonadal fusion.

Splenogonadal fusion is a rare developmental anomaly in which an abnormal connection between the splenic tissue and gonads or mesonephric derivatives is present. Less than 200 cases have been reported since it was first described in 1883. Preoperative misdiagnosis is common and may lead to unnecessary orchidectomy if testicular neoplasm is suspected. To avoid such outcomes, it is important to be aware of the features of splenogonadal fusion. We report the case of a five-month-old male infant with continuous-type, left-sided splenogonadal fusion, which was discovered during groin exploration fo

Resection of liver metastases from a virilizing steroid (lipoid) cell ovarian tumor.

The authors report the case of a 34-year-old woman who presented liver metastases from a virilizing lipoid cell ovarian tumor. The patient complained of right upper quadrant abdominal pain, strong virilization and secondary amenorrhea. She developed hirsutism and irregular menses at the age of 23, and a salpingo-ooforectomy for a right ovarian lipoid cell tumor was performed. She was asymptomatic but 6 months before admission she presented abdominal pain. The computed tomography scan showed a large right-side hypodense liver lesion. Tumor and viral markers were normal. Serum testosterone was 7
