SOX6 Expression Is Sensitive for Peritoneal Epithelioid Malignant Mesothelioma, But Not Specific in the Differential Diagnosis With Tubo-ovarian Serous Neoplasia.

Primary peritoneal malignant mesothelioma (MM) can demonstrate morphologic overlap with low-grade and high-grade tubo-ovarian serous neoplasms; it is also biologically and prognostically distinct from benign mesothelial proliferations. Currently, there is no single biomarker that can definitively distinguish these neoplasms. Sex-determining region Y box 6 (SOX6) immunohistochemistry has been recently described to differentiate pleural epithelioid MM from lung adenocarcinoma, but it has not been evaluated in the peritoneum. SOX6 immunohistochemistry was performed on 43 peritoneal epithelioid MM

Fine-needle aspiration of a well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma in the inguinal hernia sac: A case report and review of literature.

Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma (WDPM) is an uncommon subtype of epithelioid mesothelioma. In contrast to malignant epithelioid mesothelioma, WDPM has a low malignant potential and an indolent clinical course. WDPM may be difficult to diagnose and differentiate from benign reactive mesothelial cells and other malignant neoplasm on cytology specimens due to the presence of papillary or tubulopapillary clusters of tumor cells. We report a case of a 63-year-old Asian male with a slowly growing left inguinal hernia mass for several years and a concurrent 8 cm mass in the peritoneal wall

Pleural multicystic mesothelial proliferation. The so-called multicystic mesothelioma.

We report on the clinical and pathological features of a hitherto unrecognized multicystic and multifocal mesothelial lesion arising in the pleural cavity of a 37-year-old Caucasian woman. The lesions consisted of clusters of thin-walled cysts separated by connective tissue and lined by a single layer of flattened and cuboidal mesothelium. Mucin stains, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy were consistent with a mesothelial origin. The pathological features are identical to those of the previously reported multicystic mesotheliomas of the peritoneum. Although these multicystic periton

Benign mesothelial mesenteric cyst: case report and literature review.

A rare case of a benign mesothelial cyst arising from the mesentery of the descending colon is presented. A 73 year old female presented with an asymptomatic mesenteric cyst on CT scan. Colonoscopy revealed extrinsic compression of the descending colon. Surgical resection of the cyst necessitated partial colon resection due to the adherent nature of the cyst to the colon and its mesentery. The details of the case are presented as well as a brief review of the relevant literature.

Radiology-pathology conference: primary peritoneal mesothelioma.

Primary peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare neoplasm which carries a dismal prognosis. These highly aggressive tumors arise from mesothelial cells lining the peritoneum and are rapidly fatal. The neoplasm is typically associated with crocidolite asbestos exposure. We present the case of a 75-year-old man with primary peritoneal mesothelioma, with invasion into the right hepatic lobe.

Unusual fallopian tube neoplasm in a 10-year-old patient with Proteus syndrome: a case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of fallopian tube and peritoneal lesions resected from a 10-year-old girl with Proteus syndrome. The papillary fallopian tube tumor expressed CA-125 and demonstrated negative staining for CEA, CD15, calretinin, and CK 5/6. Nondilated portions of fallopian tube exhibited evidence of an in situ component. This patient was also found to have peritoneal mesothelial hyperplasia as well as cystic peritoneal lesions of mesothelial origin, with positive calretinin staining. This case provides direct evidence of both Müllerian and mesothelial lesions arising concurrently in a patient w

Benign multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma: use of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC).

Benign Multicystic Peritoneal Mesothelioma (BMPM) is a rare mesothelial neoplasm, first described in 1979, with an estimated incidence of 1-2 cases per million. It primarily affects women of reproductive age and has been associated with chronic inflammatory processes such as endometriosis or previous surgeries. Due to its clinical and radiological similarity to ovarian neoplasms, it is essential to include gynecological pathology in the differential diagnosis.

Imaging characteristics of pleural tumours.

UNLABELLED: Malignant mesothelioma is doubtless the more known pleural tumour. However, according to the morphology code of the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O), there are several histological types of pleural neoplasms, divided into mesothelial, mesenchymal and lymphoproliferative tumours, that may be misdiagnosed. In this paper we summarise and illustrate the incidence aspects and the clinical, pathological and radiological features of these neoplasms. TEACHING POINTS: • According to the ICD-O, there are 11 different histological types of pleural neoplasm. • Ima

STK11 Adnexal Tumor: Exploring the Association With Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome and its Distinction From Morphologic Mimickers.

STK11 adnexal tumor is a novel malignant neoplasm of uncertain histogenesis frequently arising in a para-adnexal location and associated with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in ∼50% of patients. Its broad morphologic spectrum and nonspecific immunohistochemical profile has resulted in misclassification in the past as a variety of other neoplasms including those of wolffian, sex cord-stromal, mesothelial, and epithelial derivation. This review focuses on the spectrum of adnexal neoplasms that may develop in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, with particular emphasis on STK11 adnexal tumor and its differential diag

Value of podoplanin as an immunohistochemical marker in tumor diagnosis: a review and update.

Podoplanin is a type I integral membrane glycoprotein that, because it is expressed in lymphatic endothelium, but not in vascular blood vessel endothelial cells, is commonly used in the identification of lymphatic endothelial differentiation in vascular endothelial neoplasms and lymphatic invasion by tumor. Because podoplanin is also expressed in mesothelial cells and fetal gonocytes, it has proved to be a useful marker for assisting in the differential diagnosis of mesotheliomas and germ cell tumors, particularly seminomas/dysgerminomas. Podoplanin expression has also been reported in a wide

Solitary Fibrous Tumor of Uterine Cervix: A Rare Entity Mimicking Clinically as Carcinoma Cervix.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are a rare spindle cell neoplasm arising from mesenchymal cells. It was first described in the pleura. There are numerous reports that document their extrapleural locations. SFT involving the cervix is extremely rare and only a handful of cases have been reported in Indian and western literature. Previously, it was thought that SFT tumor cells differentiated from mesothelial cells into fibroblasts. With the advent of immunohistochemistry, it is revealed that tumor cells in SFT lack mesothelial characteristics but express CD34 and Bcl-2, suggesting that the tumor

Mesothelial/Monocytic Incidental Cardiac Excrescences (MICE): An Enigmatic Cardiac Pathology.

Mesothelial/monocytic incidental cardiac excrescences (MICE) are rare, reactive tumor-like lesions of the heart. They are typically incidental findings during cardiac surgery. They can mimic thrombi or neoplasms such as myxoma, papillary fibroelastoma, and metastatic carcinoma histopathologically, leading to diagnostic confusion. We report a case of atrial MICE in a 40-year-old woman with rheumatic mitral stenosis and long-standing atrial fibrillation, who underwent mitral valve replacement following a failed percutaneous transvenous mitral commissurotomy. Histopathological examination reveale

Diagnostic dilemma: solitary fibrous tumor or hemangiopericytoma of the submandibular region in a patient with multiple odontogenic keratocysts.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare spindle cell neoplasms that originate from mesothelial-lined surfaces, mainly the pleura and peritoneum. SFT is a distinctive mesenchymal neoplasm of the pleura but can be found in extrapleural sites. The treatment of SFT is simple excision or wide local resection. This is the case study of a 14-year-old girl who presented with a large diffuse swelling in the left submandibular region, ultimately diagnosed with SFT and surgically excised.

Asbestos-Induced Mesothelial to Fibroblastic Transition Is Modulated by the Inflammasome.

Despite the causal relationship established between malignant mesothelioma (MM) and asbestos exposure, the exact mechanism by which asbestos induces this neoplasm and other asbestos-related diseases is still not well understood. MM is characterized by chronic inflammation, which is believed to play an intrinsic role in the origin of this disease. We recently found that asbestos activates the nod-like receptor family member containing a pyrin domain 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in a protracted manner, leading to an up-regulation of IL-1β and IL-18 production in human mesothelial cells. Combined with

[Cystic adenomatoid tumor of the uterus].

Adenomatoid tumors are benign neoplasms of mesothelial origin, which involve the feminine and masculine genital tracts. They are more generally casually discovered. Our study presents an adenomatoid tumour, of cystic shape, which enables discussion of the histogenesis of this tumour and enlightenment of differential diagnoses which can at times result in an incorrect malignant diagnosis.

Benign multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma presenting as a retroperitoneal pelvic mass in a young woman: a case report.

Benign multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare mesothelial neoplasm with fewer than 200 reported cases, typically arising on peritoneal or pelvic surfaces in premenopausal women. We describe a 21-year-old woman with a 2-week history of left lower abdominal pain. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a multiloculated cystic retroperitoneal mass adherent to the sigmoid colon, with normal ovaries and uterus. CA-125 was mildly elevated. At laparotomy, the mass was confirmed to be retroperitoneal without ovarian involvement, requiring en-bloc excision with sigmoid colectomy and primary anastomosi

Review of the impact of the International System for Serous Fluid Cytopathology.

The International System for Reporting Serous Fluid Cytology (TIS) has been proposed by an expert working team composed of the International Academy of Cytology and the American Society of Cytopathology, following an international survey. Since its introduction, the TIS has gained worldwide acceptance, and this review aims to assess its global impact. A literature search revealed 25 studies which have presented data on the impact of the TIS. Most of them provide data, including risk of malignancy (ROM) for each diagnostic category, separately for pleural, peritoneal and pericardial effusions,
