Chronic Encapsulated Intracerebral Hematoma as an Occasional Finding in Sudden Cardiac Death.

Chronic encapsulated intracerebral hematoma (CEIH) is a rare solid mass characterized by the presence of a fibrotic capsule that can present a variety of signs and symptoms due to the mass effect and hydrocephalus. It may be caused by post-traumatic or spontaneous bleeding as related to an adjacent aneurysm, angiomas or neoplasms. Differential diagnosis must be applied in order for it to mimic neoplasm or a vascular malformation. Several cases of CEIH have been reported but only a few of them have an intraventricular localization. A forensic autopsy of a 50-year-old male who died suddenly whil

Synovial metastasis of the shoulder detected by arthroscopy as the presenting manifestation of lung adenocarcinoma.

A case in which a post-traumatic shoulder impairment revealed the presence of the joint involvement by a metastatic localization of lung adenocarcinoma is presented. The patient was a 60-year-old white man, a smoker, in apparent healthy condition complaining of pain and stiffness from a 1-year-old traumatic accident to the right shoulder sustained during a tennis match. He had been unsuccessfully treated for 6 months with physical therapy. Because of the negativity of the usual imaging studies, a diagnostic arthroscopy was performed. It revealed the presence of a traumatic rupture of the gleno

Intraocular Chondrosarcoma in a Rabbit.

Post-traumatic intraocular sarcomas are rarely reported in domestic animals and are most common in cats. An 8-year-old rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was referred to a veterinary clinic due to ocular discharge, uveitis and protein precipitate in the anterior chamber of the right eye. The eye was enucleated and histopathological examination revealed a poorly demarcated tumour within the ciliary body with invasion to adjacent eye structures. Neoplastic cells formed chaotic cartilage lacunae and were immunopositive for vimentin but immunonegative for pancytokeratin. On this basis, the neoplasm wa

Relationship between World Assumptions and Post-Traumatic Growth among Polish Cancer Patients: Moderating Effect of Rumination.

BACKGROUND: Although post-traumatic growth is believed to be the result of complex interplays between various factors, cognitive variables appear to play a special role in these interactions. Yet, research on this topic is scant. Therefore, the first purpose of this study was to verify whether there is a direct relationship between world assumptions and post-traumatic growth among Polish cancer patients. As the effect of psychological change in post-traumatic growth may be affected by basic beliefs about the world and oneself, the second goal was to assess whether this association is moderated

Heterogeneous patterns of posttraumatic stress symptoms and depression in cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Studies suggest that posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) and depression are common psychological outcomes in cancer patients and have high co-occurring prevalence. However, it is unclear whether PTSSs and depression always co-occur in cancer patients. This study aimed to clarify these co-occurring patterns. METHODS: Participants were 270 cancer patients who completed self-report questionnaires. Latent profile analysis was used to examine co-occurring patterns of PTSSs and depression. RESULTS: The results indicated four patient types: a low symptom group (n = 34, 13.0%), a depre

Ultrasonography of the popliteal fossa and lower extremities.

In this article, the numerous proven applications of diagnostic ultrasound to the assessment of disease processes affecting the popliteal fossa and lower extremities have been discussed. Popliteal cysts and aneurysms, hematomas, cellulitis, abscesses, soft tissue neoplasms, and other space-occupying fluid collections are readily identified using this technique. In addition, post-traumatic and inflammatory disorders affecting tendons, synovial thickening and effusion, derangement of articular cartilage, meniscal tears, and alterations in soft tissue thickness as well as foreign bodies are amena

Marjolin's ulcer arising in a burn scar.

Marjolin's ulcer-a term used to describe a malignancy arising in chronic ulcers of the skin, sinuses, scar tissue, and especially burns scars-occurs in two forms: an acute variant in which the malignant changes occur within a year of injury, and a chronic form in which the injury may precede the malignancy by decades. Illustrating the more common chronic form, we present the case of a 32-year old Haitian woman with an extensive squamous cell carcinoma arising from a burn scar on the dorsum of her right hand, with a review of the literature pertaining to burn scar carcinoma.

Pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia in chronic cutaneous wounds. A flow cytometric study.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) arising in a setting of chronic regeneration and repair tend to be highly aggressive lesions prognostically distinct from SCC arising in solar-damaged skin. Full thickness thermal injury and chronic nonhealing ulcers are predisposing conditions in up to 2% of SCC. A significant association has been suggested to exist between pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia (PH) and SCC. Three-hundred-eighty-six surgical cases of skin excised secondary to severe burns (n = 254) or chronic ulcers (n = 132) were reviewed, yielding 43 (11%) with PH. Flow cytometric DNA an

Trauma Informed Care and early distress identification in oncology settings.

Cancer is not only a physical illness but also a source of substantial emotional and psychological trauma and distress for patients. Oncology-related trauma stems from the uncertainty of diagnosis, invasive treatments, and the potential threat to life, leading to emotional distress, anxiety, and in some cases, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Addressing this trauma early is essential for patient well-being, as unresolved distress and trauma can exacerbate mental health challenges and hinder treatment adherence. Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) offers a framework to mitigate these issues by foc

Evidence and best practices for trauma-informed care in gynecologic oncology patients.

Diagnosing, treating, and managing gynecologic cancer can lead to significant physical and emotional stress, which may have lasting effects on a patient's overall health and quality of life. The physical symptoms of gynecologic cancer, such as pain, discomfort, and loss of function, may also contribute to emotional distress and anxiety. Further, the diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance of gynecologic cancer may be traumatic due to the need for invasive exams and procedures, especially in women with a history of sexual assault or other traumatic experiences.Women with gynecologic cancer may e

Post-traumatic stress symptoms, post-traumatic stress disorder, and post-traumatic growth among cancer survivors: a systematic scoping review of interventions.

The detrimental effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms (PTSS) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the benefits of Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG) are well established for cancer survivors. Increased cancer survival rates necessitate an understanding of how these two paradoxical outcomes, PTSS/PTSD and PTG, are targeted through interventions. This systematic scoping review aims to (a) examine existing evidence on interventions targeting PTSS/PTSD and/or PTG among cancer survivors and (b) identify knowledge gaps to inform future research. Following the six steps of a scoping review, 76

[Prevalence of adjustment disorder, acute and posttraumatic stress disorders as well as somatoform disorders in cancer patients].

We aimed to systematically summarize the empirical evidence on the 4-week-, 12-month-, and lifetime prevalence of adjustment disorders, acute and posttraumatic stress disorders as well as somatoform disorders in cancer patients. We evaluated 64 English or German language original papers and systematic reviews that assessed the prevalence of affective and anxiety disorders using structured clinical interviews published between 1995 and 2010. Adjusted prevalence rates were calculated using a random-intercept model. We found the following pooled adjusted 4-week prevalence rates: For adjustment di

Parental adjustment to the completion of their child's cancer treatment.

Childhood cancer treatment completion is a significant milestone. However, coming off treatment may be a time of psychological vulnerability for parents. This review assesses published research (1979-2009) on the psychosocial impact of treatment completion on parents. Fifteen articles met all inclusion criteria and demonstrated that while they celebrate treatment completion, parents (particularly mothers) can experience significant distress, including fear of recurrence, fatigue, and loneliness. Distress appears to ease with time, possibly as the perceived risk of relapse declines. Continued p

Marjolin's ulcer on the nose.

Malignancies in scars are generally known as Marjolin's ulcer. The majority of these arise from burn injuries. Although Marjolin's ulcer consists of all kinds of skin cancer, squamous cell carcinoma is the main cancer type reported in the literature. The pathogenesis of this tumor is due to chronic irritation of the effected area and mostly involves the extremities and scalp area. This report presents an unusually located and rare type of Marjolin's ulcer: on the nose and baso-squamotic in type. A 54-year-old man, 33 years after burn, presented with an unhealed ulcer on his nose which had been

Insight into the management of non-traumatic perforation of the small intestine.

INTRODUCTION: Management of non-traumatic perforation of the small intestine has always been a consideration for surgeons because of associated enormous morbidity and mortality. There is a paucity of data on the management of non-traumatic perforation of the small intestine. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective study was conducted which involved analysis of 192 patients treated for non-traumatic perforation of small intestine in a tertiary care teaching hospital in North India. The clinical profile and management of the patients were studied. RESULTS: The most common cause of non-traumatic perforati
