There is significant interest in the development of agents that can ameliorate radiation damage after exposure to radiation has occurred. Here we report that chronic supplementation of the antioxidant Tempol in the diet of mice can reduce body weight without toxicity, decrease cancer, and extend survival when administered after nonlethal total body radiation (TBI). These effects were apparent in two different strains of mice (C3H, CBA) exposed to TBI (3 Gy). Notably, delaying administration of the Tempol diet one month after TBI could also enhance survival. Tempol reduced the incidence of hema

Radiation-induced olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is an uncommon neoplasm that is generally associated with a poor prognosis. We experienced an unusual case of ONB in a patient who had received previous radiation therapy for extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma 15 years previously. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a patient with radiation-induced ONB obtaining a complete response (CR) with radical re-irradiation alone. The purpose of this report is to discuss therapeutic strategies for radiation-induced ONB. We report an unusual case of ONB suspected to be a radiation-induced neoplasm in a

PURPOSE: To assess the radiation risk of carcinogenesis in individuals professionally exposed to low-level ionizing radiation in a longitudinal cohort study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Analysed were the incidence and mortality induced by malignant neoplasms in a cohort of 1,560 occupationally exposed individuals (OEI) working in areas of ionizing radiation during 1992-2002 (study group). Assessment of exposure to radiation was recorded by personal thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD), regular periodic health checkups, and bio-dosimetric data (chromosomal aberrations). Incidence and mortality were c

Two equally useful dosimetric quantities, both of which are called dose, are used in toxicology. With radiation measurement, only one--the energy per unit mass D--is called dose. The other--the total energy in the irradiated system--is here distinguished from D by assigning it the name collective energy, epsilon. The collective energy is a more complete statement of dose because it is the product of the energy concentration D and the mass irradiated m. Especially in radioepidemiology, in which epsilon is the total energy imparted to all persons irradiated, the quantity m must be specified beca

In a series of related experiments to evaluate the relative toxicity of inhaled radionuclides, beagles were exposed to aerosols containing relatively soluble (chloride) or relatively insoluble (fused clay) forms of 144-Ce and 90Sr. With the solubled 144-CeCl3, significant radiation doses were delivered to the lungs, liver, and skeleton whereas, after 90-SrCl2 exposure, the radiation dose was delivered predominantly to the skeleton. In dogs exposed to 144-Ce and 90-Sr in fused clay particles, radiation doses were delivered mostly to the lungs and tracheobronchial lymph nodes. In most dogs dying

The commonest radiation-induced neoplasms are sarcomas. Ionizing radiation is not usually associated with the development of malignant melanoma. We report two patients with malignant melanoma occurring within a previously irradiated area. There is evidence to support radiation in the pathogenesis of melanoma but the family histories, especially in one patient, suggest that genetic mutations may also have played a role, particularly in relation to the short latent period.

Benign and malignant neoplasms of the thyroid are uncommon during childhood, but they create diagnostic problems for the clinician to identify malignant legions that must be removed as well as medically important lesions that require treatment. Throughout the 20th century there was a rapid increase in the incidence of thyroid neoplasms which we now know were induced by ionizing radiation acquired from radiation therapy for benign medical conditions or from environmental sources such as nuclear testing and accidents [Cancer 1961;14:734-743]. Over recent decades, there have been major advances i

To effectively practice radiation protection, radiographers must understand the potential biologic effects of radiation. This article reviews the importance of a knowledge of radiobiology to the work of radiologic technologists. The author describes four specific biologic effects from radiation exposure--leukemia, thyroid cancer, breast cancer and fetal effects--and presents clinical examples that relate to current radiation protection practices and concerns.

Nonlethal exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) is a public concern due to its known carcinogenic effects. Although latency periods for IR-induced neoplasms are relatively long, the ability to detect cancer as early as possible is highly advantageous for effective therapeutic intervention. Therefore, we hypothesized that metabolites in the urine from mice exposed to total body radiation (TBI) would predict for the presence of cancer before a palpable mass was detected. In this study, we exposed mice to 0 or 5.4 Gy TBI, collected urine samples periodically over 1 year, and assayed urine metabolit

Long-term adverse health conditions, including secondary malignant neoplasms, are common in childhood cancer survivors. Although mortality attributable to secondary malignancies declined over the past decades, the risk for developing a solid secondary malignant neoplasm did not. Endocrine-related malignancies are among the most common secondary malignant neoplasms observed in childhood cancer survivors. In this systematic review, we describe risk factors for secondary malignant neoplasms of the breast and thyroid, since these are the most common secondary endocrine-related malignancies in chil

A complete assessment of late effects of X-ray diagnostics should take into account that radiation sensitivity varies considerably for the different ages at exposure and, furthermore, that not only malignant diseases but also benign neoplasms are induced which also may lead to severe detriment of the patient. Risk estimates are derived for paediatric head CTs as well as for brain tumours in adults. Dose-effect relationships for tumours of the brain, skin, thyroid, and other sites of the head region, leukaemia, and cataracts are taken from the literature. On the basis of estimates for Germany a

PURPOSE: Radiation-induced olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is an uncommon neoplasm that is generally associated with a poor prognosis. We describe a new case of olfactory neuroblastoma in a patient previously treated for astrocytoma with holocranial radiotherapy 9 years ago.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of four patients with radiation-induced olfactory neuroblastoma between 2001 and 2009.
RESULTS: This work supports the idea that ONB can be induced by radiation.
CONCLUSIONS: As radiotherapy is a standard treatment in other tumors, clinicians must be aware of the poss

Although medulloblastoma is said to be capable of astrocytic differentiation, the development of an astrocytic neoplasm in association with a medulloblastoma is extremely rare. We report the light and electron microscopic features of a supratentorial glioblastoma that occurred 13 years after radiation therapy for a cerebellar medulloblastoma. The diverse ultrastructural features of the glioblastoma may reflect the multipotentiality of the cells in medulloblastoma. An alternate interpretation is that the glioblastoma represents a radiation-induced neoplasm after therapy for a medulloblastoma.

Postoperative radiation therapy (RT), either alone or in combination with chemotherapy, is the mainstay of treatment for primary and/or metastatic brain tumors. The majority of patients with brain tumors will have significant symptoms of their disease and of RT that will have a negative impact on their quality of life and neurocognitive function. The symptoms of brain tumors depend on tumor location. Radiation-induced brain injury is a complex and dynamic process involving all cells in the brain, including endothelial and oligodendroglial cells, astrocytes, microglia, neurons, and neuronal ste

Recent studies suggest that the lifetime cancer risks from exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation may be greater than previously estimated. This review first summarizes the findings of these studies as they pertain to dental radiology, then uses their concepts in combination with dosimetry from the dental literature to estimate the radiation risk from dental radiology. Estimation of risk from groups of exposed individuals requires use of mathematical models that fit the epidemiological data. The ICRP estimates that a single brief whole-body exposure of 1 Gy to 10,000 people results in ab

Actinic keratoses are benign intraepithelial skin neoplasms constituted by atypical proliferation of keratinocytes that may evolve to squamous cell carcinoma. They develop in photoexposed skin areas; they are induced mainly by ultraviolet radiation and are considered cutaneous markers of chronic exposure to sunlight. They develop mainly in adults and older, fair skinned individuals, and are the fourth most common cause of dermatologic consultation in Brazil. Damage to the apoptosis pathway in photoexposed epithelium favors cellular proliferation and the permanence of the lesions. In this revis

This study aims to investigate the contribution of diagnostic exposures to the rising rates of brain tumours and other neoplasms which are observed in several industrial nations. Included are benign tumours in the head and neck region and cataracts which are neglected in usual risk estimates by international and national radiation protection committees. Dose-effect relationships for tumours of the brain, skin, thyroid and other sites of the head region, leukaemia and cataracts are taken from the literature. Risk estimates are derived for paediatric head computed tomographies (CTs) as well as f

This review deals with essential physical and biologic aspects of ionizing radiation as related to dermatology. The discussion of major physical factors and basic biophysics includes the production of x rays, dose definitions and recent changes in terminology, various factors affecting dose and tissue damage and current radiotherapy methods. The biologic effects and potential risks of ionizing radiation are reviewed in detail, particularly the major nonstochastic and stochastic somatic effects, such as radiation-induced skin cancer, thyroid carcinoma, breast cancer, and other radiogenic neopla

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), is a rare, autosomal recessive disease with sun sensitivity and multiple neoplasms in association with reduced DNA repair. As a reflection of the clinical consequences of deficient DNA repair, XP serves as a model for determining the effects of proficient DNA repair. To estimate the risk of developing neoplasms in XP, we abstracted reports of 726 XP patients (from 41 countries) published from 1874 to 1982. Despite limitations of a literature survey, the XP patients under age 20 years had an estimated 2000-fold increase in frequency of basal cell and squamous cell ca
