Malignant Transformation of Mature Cystic Teratoma: Is Squamous Cell Carcinoma Different From the Other Types of Neoplasm?

OBJECTIVES: Malignant transformation of mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is rare. Unlike squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in MCT, the other types of neoplasm in MCT have not been discussed in publications. We analyzed the clinical characteristics and prognosis of the other types of neoplasm (non-SCC) compared with those of SCC. METHODS: A systematic literature search of literature published from 2000 to 2017 was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. We reviewed case series that included all pathological types of malignant transformation. RESULTS: A total of 155 cases from 15 case series,

Routine endoscopic screening for synchronous esophageal neoplasm in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: a prospective study.

Early detection of synchronous esophageal squamous cell neoplasm (ESCN) in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients can significantly affect their prognosis. We investigated the prevalence of synchronous ESCN and the risk factors for developing ESCN in patients with HNSCC, and evaluated the effect of routine endoscopic screening in these patients. Subjects who were diagnosed as HNSCC from May 2010 to January 2014 were eligible. All patients underwent conventional white light endoscopic examinations with narrow band imaging and Lugol chromoendoscopy. Among 458 subjects screened, 2

Clinical significance of intensive endoscopic screening for synchronous esophageal neoplasm in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) often develop second primary tumors in the upper aerodigestive tract. Early detection of synchronous esophageal squamous cell neoplasm (ESCN) is important because the prognosis of HNSCC can be affected by the statuses of second primary tumors. METHODS: In a prospective study, 308 patients with HNSCC were screened for synchronous ESCN between May 2010 and April 2012. All patients underwent conventional white-light endoscopic examination with Lugol chromoendoscopy and narrow band image. RESULTS: The median age was 61 years

Case report: HPV related pelvic retroperitoneal squamous cell cancer of unknown primary presenting as ovary neoplasm.

INTRODUCTION: Retroperitoneal tumors (RPTs) of the pelvis are rare and often present asymptomatically. We report a rare case of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related primary retroperitoneal squamous cell carcinoma (PRSCC) that was preoperatively misdiagnosed as adnexal cancer. CASE PRESENTATION: A menopausal 59-year-old woman presented with right leg pain persisting for two months. Imaging revealed a heterogeneous lesion in the right adnexal area; however, the uterus and left ovary appeared normal. Laboratory tests showed slightly elevated levels of cancer 125 (CA 125) and squamous cell carcinom

Intrathyroid epithelial thymoma (ITET) and carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE): CD5-positive neoplasms mimicking squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid.

Carcinoma of possible thymic epithelial origin may occur within the thyroid gland, which was first reported by Miyauchi et al. as intrathyroid epithelial thymoma (ITET). ITET is a rare tumor comprising about 0.08% of all primary thyroid malignancies. It is a low-grade thyroid carcinoma with squamous cell differentiation whose overall survival rate was found to be 71%. Lymph node metastasis at surgery was found in 40% and hematogenous metastases developed in bones, liver and lungs. This tumor grows within the thyroid gland and invades into the thyroid parenchyma as well as into the extrathyroid

Simultaneous squamous cell carcinomas of the uterine cervix and upper genital tract: loss of heterozygosity analysis demonstrates clonal neoplasms of cervical origin.

Five cases of cervical squamous cell carcinoma with synchronous superficial squamous cell carcinoma in the upper genital tract were genetically analyzed to demonstrate the possibility of a clonal neoplastic process. In these cases, the cervical lesions were squamous cell carcinoma in situ (cases 1, 2, and 3) and invasive squamous cell carcinoma (cases 4 and 5). Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) analyses with a panel of microsatellite markers revealed a monoclonal process in four of the five cases. Homogeneous LOH throughout the microdissected lesions was most frequently detected on 6p and 6q (3 cas

Cytokeratin7 and cytokeratin19 expression in high grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasm and squamous cell carcinoma and their possible association in cervical carcinogenesis.

BACKGROUND: High risk human papillomavirus (HR HPV) infects cells at the squamocolumnar junction (SCJ) of the cervix, causing cancer. Cytokeratin (CK)7 is an SCJ marker, and stains cervical neoplasia. CK19 is a binding partner of CK7 and expressed in cervical cancer. Despite this possible association between CK7/CK19 and cervical cancer, not much is known about the mechanism of CK7/CK19 involvement in HR HPV-mediated cervical carcinogenesis. METHODS: We analyzed the expression pattern of CK7, CK19, and p16 by using immunohistochemistry and HPV infection by in situ hybridization in 25 cases of

Metastatic Tonsil Squamous Cell Carcinoma: An Important Consideration in the Differential Diagnosis of Malignant Basaloid Neoplasms in the Skin: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Malignant basaloid neoplasms of the skin are frequent, and their accurate diagnosis holds paramount importance for treatment and prognosis. However, these neoplasms can present diagnostic challenges because of their extensive differential diagnosis, which encompasses cutaneous metastasis among many other possibilities. We present a case of a 74-year-old man with a history of p16-positive palatine tonsil squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) treated with surgery and adjuvant radiation with no prior evidence of recurrence who presented to the dermatologist with 2 chin papules. The initial histopathologi

Parotid squamous cell carcinoma metastases: Application of human papillomavirus-DNA test on liquid-based cytology to recognize oropharyngeal origin of the neoplasm.

Malignancies of the parotid gland are relatively uncommon and in most cases are primary neoplasms; intraparotid metastases are rare. Oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (O- and OP-SCC) can potentially metastasize to the parotid gland or intraparotid lymph nodes. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) serves as the initial diagnostic approach for this purpose. HPV status in FNAC specimens is relevant and can guide the diagnostic workup, indicating a potential oropharyngeal origin of the primary tumor. A small series of occult SCC metastases is presented below, in which HPV-DNA testin

Low Grade Papillary Sinonasal (Schneiderian) Carcinoma: A Series of Five Cases of a Unique Malignant Neoplasm with Comparison to Inverted Papilloma and Conventional Nonkeratinizing Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

There have been a few case reports and one small series of low grade papillary sinonasal (Schneiderian) carcinomas (LGPSC) which mimic papillomas but have overtly invasive growth and which occasionally metastasize. We describe the morphologic, clinical, immunohistochemical, and molecular features of five patients with LGPSC compared with eight cases each of inverted papilloma (IP) and conventional nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with papillary growth. All LGPSC were nested with predominantly pushing invasion, no stromal reaction, and frequent surface papillary growth. All consist

Epithelial expression of extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer/CD147 and matrix metalloproteinase-2 in neoplasms and precursor lesions derived from cutaneous squamous cells: An immunohistochemical study.

Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (CD147) is a transmembrane glycoprotein involved in the regulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). The study investigated CD147 and MMP-2 expression in epidermis of cutaneous squamous lesions. CD147 and MMP-2 expressions were evaluated immunohistochemically in 44 specimens: 18 actinic keratoses (AK), 6 squamous cell carcinomas in situ (SCCIS), 13 squamous cell carcinomas (SCC; peritumoral and invasive portions assessed), and 7 normal skins. Patterns of expression were assessed, with MMP-2 in nuclei (MMP-2n) and cytoplasm (MMP-2c) evaluated se

Frequent EGFR exon 20 insertion in the so-called peripheral-type squamous cell neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential: a variant of bronchiolar adenoma or under-recognised entity?

INTRODUCTION: Herein we describe a series of rare peripheral pulmonary neoplasms temporarily termed "peripheral type squamous cell neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential (PSCN-UMP)" and investigate their relationship to bronchiolar adenoma (BA) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The histologic and immunohistochemical features of 10 PSCN-UMPs and six BAs were compared. Whole exome sequencing (WES) and bioinformatics analysis were performed to further compare the genetic features of PSCN-UMPs, BAs, and NSCLCs. RESULTS: All PSCN-UMPs were peripherally located and histo

Pseudohyperplastic squamous cell carcinoma of the penis associated with lichen sclerosus. An extremely well-differentiated, nonverruciform neoplasm that preferentially affects the foreskin and is frequently misdiagnosed: a report of 10 cases of a distinctive clinicopathologic entity.

We present 10 cases of well-differentiated, squamous cell carcinoma of the penis with pseudohyperplastic features. At presentation, the median age was 69 years. Seven of the tumors were multicentric, and the majority preferentially involved the foreskin inner mucosal surface. Grossly the tumors were typically flat or slightly elevated, white and granular, and measured approximately 2 cm. Characteristic histologic features included keratinizing nests of squamous cells with minimal atypia surrounded by a reactive fibrous stroma. In biopsies or individual areas of resected specimens, the differen
