[Vascular tumors of the skin and soft tissue. Overview of newly characterized entities and variants].

This review summarizes vascular tumours of skin and soft tissues that have been characterised in recent years. Although most of them are very rare, knowledge about their reproducible clinicopathological features is important to avoid diagnostic pitfalls. These lesions include: bacillary angiomatosis, a vasoproliferative, pseudoneoplastic infection of immunocompromised patients caused by Rochalimaea henselae; tufted angioma, a variant of lobular capillary haemangioma characterised by a "cannon-ball" distribution of multiple lobules composed of packed capillaries and pericytes; microvenular haem

Angiomatous lesions of glans penis.

Two patients with an angiomatous lesion of the glans penis are presented. These lesions are rare and difficult to distinguish from the spongiosum tissue. There is much controversy concerning their true nature, i.e., whether they represent a true neoplasm, herniation of the corpus spongiosum, or vascularization of a hematoma or thrombus. The present lesions were not true neoplasms, but are best described as malformative lesions.

Peripheral vascular lesions in adults referred to MRI/MRA: Multivariable analysis of imaging features to help differentiate benign vascular anomalies from malignancies.

PURPOSE: Symptomatic peripheral vascular lesions in adults are often clinically diagnosed as benign vascular anomalies and may receive MRI/MRA for pre-treatment vascular mapping. Malignant neoplasms are difficult to distinguish from benign vascular anomalies on MRI/MRA. This study was performed to determine if there are imaging signs that can distinguish malignancies from benign vascular anomalies in adults imaged with MRI/MRA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A radiology database was retrospectively searched for ISSVA classification terms in MRI/MRA reports from 1/1/2002-1/1/2019. Adult patients (n =

Cytodiagnostic features of angiofibroma of soft tissue: A review of 16 cases to identify characteristic findings and their diagnostic significance.

BACKGROUND: Angiofibroma of soft tissue (AFST) is a rare benign fibroblastic/myofibroblastic neoplasm. Despite several published studies describing the clinicopathological features of AFSTs, its cytological characteristics remain poorly documented. This study aimed to identify distinctive cytological features that may support accurate diagnosis. METHODS: The authors reviewed 16 histologically confirmed AFST cases diagnosed at their institution between 2007 and 2025. The cytological specimens were evaluated for stromal composition, vascular patterns, cellularity, and cytomorphology. Fluorescen

Primary aortic myxofibrosarcoma mimicking thrombus: findings on CT, MRI, and angiography.

Aortic sarcoma is a rare vascular malignancy. We report a case of primary aortic myxofibrosarcoma mimicking thrombus. This neoplasm demonstrated no contrast enhancement on computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging and was clinically suspected to represent a large thrombus, although aortic primary neoplasm was considered in the differential diagnosis on the basis of imaging. Biopsies of the aortic lesion and a concurrent brain lesion were consistent with the diagnosis of aortic myxofibrosarcoma with brain metastasis. This report highlights overlapping imaging features between primary ao

Primary Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma of the Humerus: A Case Report.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a neoplasm originating mainly from vessels and has a mild proclivity for malignancy. This neoplasm mainly involves somatic soft tissue and retroperitoneum. Histological findings include a nodular arrangement of oval-to-spindle cells containing pale cytoplasm. Vascular spaces are in the form of slit-like channels in which red blood cells are evident. Here, we report the case of a two-year-old male who presented with Erb's palsy and a mass lesion in the right humerus. Tissue biopsy features were compatible with KHE.

Vascular soft tissue tumors: medical imaging.

Histologically, tumors of the vascular system are divided into three categories. Benign types can be localized (hemangioma) or involve large segments of the body (angiomatosis). Vascular tumors of intermediate malignancy are known as hemangioendotheliomas. Angiosarcoma is one of the rarest malignant soft tissue neoplasms. The authors present the morphological and SI features of 17 histologically proven vascular tumors (16 benign, 1 malignant) examined by MRI. The results are compared with the findings on other imaging techniques. On T1-WI, the tumors are slightly hyperintense to muscle with in

Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence-guided laparoscopic adrenalectomy.

OBJECTIVE: Laparoscopic adrenalectomy has become the standard of care for many adrenal tumors. However, the success of the operation hinges on identifying the adrenal vein and complete tumor resection. We demonstrate the use of a commercially available near infrared fluorescent imaging system to clearly delineate the vascular anatomy of adrenal neoplasms and enhance the border between tumor and normal tissue. We hypothesize that this will increase the safety of laparoscopic adrenalectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed laparoscopic adrenalectomy utilizing indocyanine green (ICG) and a sp

Angiomyxolipoma of the hard palate: a rare case report.

Lipoma is a common, benign soft tissue neoplasm consisting of mature adipocytes. Other variants exist, notably angiomyxolipoma, also referred to as vascular myxolipoma, which is an exceedingly rare benign lipomatous tumor characterized by the intimate admixture of three components: mature adipose tissue, paucicellular myxoid stroma, and a prominent vascular network. We present the case of a 55-year-old female patient who presented with a palatal swelling. Histopathological examination after surgical excision revealed an angiomyxolipoma. No abnormalities were noted after one year. Angiomyxolipo

Solitary fibrous tumour: clinicopathological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural analysis of 12 cases arising in soft tissues, nasal cavity and nasopharynx, urinary bladder and prostate.

The clinicopathological features of 12 extraserosal solitary fibrous tumours (SFT) are described. The age of the patients ranged from 18 to 72 years (mean: 48.2 years; median: 54 years); 5 were female patients. Seven lesions arose in soft tissue (5 in perifascial, and 1 each in subcutaneous and intramuscular tissues). They were situated in the groin (2 cases) and the neck, right buttock, left scapula, upper arm, and anterior abdominal wall (1 case each). One polypoid lesion was seen in in the nasal cavity and 1 in the nasopharynx; 2 neoplasms arose in the urinary bladder and 1 was located in t

An unusual intracerebral connective tissue mass.

A sharply circumscribed, vascular, connective tissue mass which replaced the cortex of several adjoining cerebral gyri is described. The histology of the lesion differs from that of previously reported central nervous system maldevelopments and neoplasms. However, there are a number of similarities to the pathology found in late phases of syphilitic "colloid" or "hyaline" degeneration of the brain.

Primary umbilical adenocarcinoma. A case report and review of literature.

A case of primary adenocarcinoma of the umbilicus is reported along with a review of the literature and discussion of possible origins of glandular tissue within this area. Multiple connections are present within the umbilicus (vascular, lymphatic, and embryologic) that may give this area access to metastatic lesions. The primary tumors may originate within the usual umbilical tissue (skin and soft tissue). Glands that are not normally present in the region of the umbilicus rarely develop malignant neoplasms. As postulated, glandular tissue may arise either as metaplasia from squamous epitheli

Primary angiosarcoma of the fibula : a case report.

Primary vascular neoplasms of bone are rare and have a poor prognosis. Angiosarcoma of bone originates in vascular endothelial cells within bone tissue. Patients may present with unifocal or multifocal osseous disease. The most commonly involved bones are femur and tibia, followed by pelvis, vertebral column and bones of the upper limb. Here we present a 72-year-old male patient who had primary angiosarcoma of the fibula. He was treated with amputation, and the metastases that later emerged were successfully managed with chemotherapy.

von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor mutants faithfully model pathological hypoxia-driven angiogenesis and vascular retinopathies in zebrafish.

Biallelic inactivation of the von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) tumor suppressor gene predisposes human patients to the development of highly vascularized neoplasms in multiple organ systems. We show that zebrafish vhl mutants display a marked increase in blood vessel formation throughout the embryo, starting at 2 days post-fertilization. The most severe neovascularization is observed in distinct areas that overlap with high vegfa mRNA expression, including the vhl mutant brain and eye. Real-time quantitative PCR revealed increased expression of the duplicated VEGFA orthologs vegfaa and vegfab, and of v

Adult-onset multifocal kaposiform hemangioendothelioma in the bone marrow, lung, liver, and brain: a case report.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE), a rare form of vascular neoplasm, is typically seen in children. In this paper, we report a unique case of KHE replacing bone marrow tissue mimicking myeloproliferative neoplasm with additional involvement in the lung, liver, and brain in a 60-year-old Caucasian woman. The patient was initially seen in the hematology department for the chief complaint of epigastric pain and anemia. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed mild splenomegaly with iron deposition secondary to extramedullary hematopoiesis. Additional workup was inconclusive. Subseq

A thoracic benign mesenchymoma in association with hemihypertrophy.

A thoracic benign mesenchymoma was removed from an 18-year old caucasian male who also had hemihypertrophy. The very large benign mesenchymoma which was removed was found to consist of an admixture of cytologically mature vascular spaces, adipose tissue, and smooth muscle. After removal of the tumor, the patient has had no recurrence with one year of follow-up. Patients with hemihypertrophy appear to be at high risk to develop neoplasms. Malignant neoplasms of the adrenal gland, kidney, and liver are most common. It is suggested that patients with hemihypertrophy should be followed periodicall

Dendritic Fibromyxolipoma of the Pyriform Sinus: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Dendritic fibromyxolipoma is a rare and distinctive soft tissue neoplasm that is considered by many authors as a variant of spindle cell lipoma and characterized by the presence of dendritic cytoplasmic processes, plexiform vascular pattern, and keloidal collagen. It has never been reported in the larynx and hypopharynx. Its rarity and the potential to mistake it as a more clinically aggressive myxoid soft tissue neoplasm highlight the importance of its recognition. Here, a case of a dendritic fibromyxolipoma of the pyriform sinus in a 38-year-old male who presented with dysphagia, change of v

Multifocal vascular neoplasm with an EWSR1::NFATC2 gene fusion and progression to epithelioid angiosarcoma - a case report.

There is an emerging group of distinct vascular neoplasms with NFATC1/2 fusions, involving bones and soft tissues and often displaying focal epithelioid morphology, variable atypia of endothelial cells, predominantly vasoformative and in some cases focal solid growth. Although they may show aggressive local growth and may recur locally, malignant behaviour has not been documented. We present a case of a 35-year-old woman with multiple vascular neoplasms with a EWSR1::NFATC2 fusion involving the lungs, multiple bones (vertebra, femurs, tibia, pelvis) and probably the liver.
