Detection of Neorickettsia risticii in antemortem fecal and postmortem fetal samples, with genomic insights from complete genome sequencing of a strain recovered from an aborted equine fetus.

Neorickettsia risticii (N. risticii) is an obligatory intracellular bacterium that causes Potomac horse fever (PHF), a disease clinically characterized by diarrhea, pyrexia, and laminitis in horses. Although sporadic reports of N. risticii infection have been linked to abortion in mares, a detailed retrospective study, including genomic analysis of the pathogen from an aborted fetus, has not been published. This study examined 546 fecal samples from clinically ill horses (January 1, 2017-December 31, 2024) and 833 colon samples from aborted equine fetuses (September 20, 2018-December 31, 2024)

A Novel Neorickettsial Infection in 3 Dogs in the Pacific Northwest.

The genus Neorickettsia includes obligate, intracellular bacteria responsible for diseases including Potomac horse fever caused by Neorickettsia risticii and salmon poisoning disease (SPD) caused by Neorickettsia helminthoeca. The Stellanchasmus falcatus (SF) agent is a member of this genus previously associated only with mild clinical signs in dogs. Between 2013 and 2016, 3 dogs in Washington State (USA) presented with disease suggestive of SPD, but N. helminthoeca was not detected by molecular techniques. Clinical signs included depression, anorexia, and diarrhea. Cytologic examination of as

Molecular survey of vector-borne agents in lowland tapirs (Tapirus terrestris) from Brazil reveals a new Anaplasma genotype.

Although vector-borne agents have been detected in different species of wild animals, studies involving tapirs (Tapirus terrestris), the largest land mammals in Brazil, are scarce. The aim of the present study was to investigate the occurrence and molecular identity of Anaplasmataceae agents, Coxiella burnetii and Hepatozoon spp. in blood samples of wild T. terrestris from two biomes (Cerrado and Pantanal) in Brazil. A total of 122 blood samples from 99 tapirs were analyzed. Sixty-one tapirs were sampled in Pantanal, whereas 38 were from Cerrado biome. DNA was extracted from blood samples and

Diagnosis of Potomac horse fever (syn. equine neorickettsiosis) in 2 foals in southwestern Ontario.

Potomac horse fever (PHF) is characterized by fever, depression, anorexia, ileus, diarrhea, and occasionally, laminitis. The disease is caused by infection with Neorickettsia risticii and/or N. findlayensis. Equids of all ages may be affected; however, the condition has not been well-characterized in foals. This report describes clinical signs, laboratory findings, and treatment of 2 foals diagnosed with PHF in southwestern Ontario. Feces submitted for an equine PCR panel tested positive for Neorickettsia spp. and were subsequently confirmed to be N. risticii (Case 1) and N. findlayensis (Case

Potomac Horse Fever.

Potomac horse fever (PHF) is a common cause of equine colitis in endemic areas. Until recently, the only causative agent known to cause PHF was Neorickettsia risticii. However, N. findlayensis has been isolated from affected horses. Horses typically become infected upon ingestion of Neorickettsia spp.-infected trematodes within aquatic insects. The most common clinical signs include diarrhea, fever, anorexia, lethargy and colic. The diagnostic test of choice for PHF is PCR of blood and feces. Tetracyclines remain an effective treatment. Supportive care, including fluid therapy, colloid adminis

Equine neorickettsiosis: A global perspective of the natural habitat of the bacteria and clinical disease.

Equine neorickettsiosis (EN) is an infectious, non-contagious systemic disease of horses caused by the closely related obligatory intracellular bacterial species Neorickettsia risticii and N. findlayensis. Clinical cases are considered endemic in multiple regions across the United States and Canada, as well as in parts of South America, including Uruguay and Brazil. Neorickettsia spp. are obligate endosymbionts of digenean trematodes, which have complex life cycles involving a molluscan first intermediate host, a wide range of invertebrate or vertebrate second intermediate hosts, and a vertebr

Vector-borne diseases in client-owned and stray cats from Madrid, Spain.

The role of various vector-borne pathogens as a cause of disease in cats has not been clearly determined. The current study evaluated risk factors, clinical and laboratory abnormalities associated with Ehrlichia spp., Anaplasma spp., Neorickettsia spp., Leishmania spp., and Bartonella spp. infection or exposure in 680 client-owned and stray cats from Madrid, Spain. Our results indicate that a large portion (35.1%) of the cat population of Madrid, Spain, is exposed to at least one of the five vector-borne pathogens tested. We found seroreactivity to Bartonella henselae in 23.8%, to Ehrlichia ca

Molecular identification of vector-borne organisms in Ehrlichia seropositive Nicaraguan horses and first report of Rickettsia felis infection in the horse.

Certain vector-borne organisms serve as etiological agents of equine disease. After previously identifying a new Ehrlichia species in horses from Mérida, we aimed to determine the infection frequency and screen for a wide range of vector-borne organisms from 93 tick-exposed, Ehrlichia seropositive horses in this region. PCR assays were performed to identify infection by organisms within the following genera: Anaplasma, Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, Leishmania, Mycoplasma, Neorickettsia, Rickettsia and Theileria. Overall, 90/93 horses (96.8%) were infected with one or more vector-borne organi

[Isolation of chlamydia in keratoconjunctivitis].

Two isolates, identified as Chlamydia (neorickettsia) were obtained from the lacrimal secretion of calves with an acute infection on two of a total of four investigated farms with a record of infectious keratoconjunctivitis. In about 70% of the calves that survived there were complement-fixing antibodies against the neorickettsial antigen, the titers ranging from 1:8 to 1:64. Calves that yielded the causative agent were investigated in terms of the antibody dynamics. In the remaining herds no specific antibodies were demonstrated in animals that had survived. One of the isolated strains was us

Infection and blood transfusion: a guide to donor screening.

In recent years, blood-component therapy has become more accessible in veterinary practice. As with human medicine, care must be taken to minimize the risk of disease transmission from donor to recipient. Determining the appropriate diseases to screen for is complicated by regional variations in disease incidence, the existence of chronic carrier states for some diseases, the difficulty in screening-test selection, and testing cost. The feline diseases considered include retroviral infections, feline coronaviruses, ehrlichiosis (Ehrlichia canis-like), anaplasmosis (Anaplasma phagocytophilum),

Infection with the Neorickettsial Organism Stellantchasmus falcatus Agent in an Arctic Fox (Vulpes lagopus).

A 1-year-old female-intact arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) presented for diarrhea, lethargy, severe thrombocytopenia, and hyperbilirubinemia. Blood film evaluation revealed intracytoplasmic coccoid bacteria within moderate numbers of leukocytes consistent with infection by a rickettsial organism. Similar organisms were observed within many leukocytes from fine-needle aspirates of an enlarged peripheral lymph node. The lymph node also contained moderate necrosis and an expansion of granular lymphocytes. Parasitic ovum consistent with the trematode Nanophyetus salmincola was found on fecal floatatio

Real-time PCR duplex assay for Rickettsia prowazekii and Borrelia recurrentis.

Rickettsia prowazekii, the etiologic agent for epidemic typhus, and Borrelia recurrentis, the etiologic agent of relapsing fever, both utilize the same vector, the human body louse (Pediculus humanus), to transmit human disease. We have developed an assay to detect both bacterial pathogens in a single tube utilizing real-time PCR. Assays for both agents are specific. The R. prowazekii and B. recurrentis assays do not detect nucleic acid from R. typhi, R. canada, or any of eight spotted fever rickettsiae. In addition they did not react with Neorickettsia risticii, N. sennetsu, Franciscella pers
