OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and outcome of paediatric percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for atypical cases and compare the results with 'standard' unilateral paediatric PCNL.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed children who had had a PCNL between December 1997 and December 2004. Patients were grouped as follows: group 1, aged >5-16 years with normal anatomy and normal renal function undergoing unilateral PCNL or staged bilateral PCNL; group 2, < or = 5 years with normal anatomy and renal function undergoing unilateral PCNL; group 3, undergoing bilateral simultaneous PCNL;

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The exact mechanism of fever and urosepsis after percutaneous procedures has not been established. This research studied the frequency of fever after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and the contributing factors.
METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, from September 2003 to March 2004, all 217 patients with nephrolithiasis treated with PCNL at the Labbafinegad Specialized Urology Center were studied. Data were collected before, during, and after surgery.
RESULTS: The frequency of fever after PCNL was 25.8% (n=56) although in 62.2% of the cases (n=135), no prophylacti

BACKGROUND: Placement of the nephrostomy tube is the last step after completion of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). We were able to demonstrate in selected patients who had undergone PCNL that the use of an externalized ureteral catheter can reduce postoperative discomfort without complications.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 37 patients underwent tubeless PCNL with an externalized 6F ureteral catheter for 48 hours. Inclusion criteria were use of a single access site where the renal unit was not obstructive, no significant perforation and bleeding, and no need for a second look. The sto

We present a patient with tuberous sclerosis and bilateral angiomyolipomas with a right partial staghorn calculi in which the calculi was managed with a percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Despite the inherent risk of hemorrhage with a percutaneous approach compounded by the fact that this was done directly through a tumor, we were able to render the patient stone free with no intraoperative bleeding, complications, or the need for postoperative blood transfusion. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of percutaneous nephrolithotomy directly through a renal angiomyolipoma.

Background Renal stone disease constitutes a significant global urological burden, with percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) serving as the gold-standard treatment for large calculi. Mini-PCNL has emerged to reduce morbidity while preserving efficacy; however, comparative prospective evidence from South Asian settings, including Bangladesh, remains scarce. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes, including efficacy and morbidity, of mini-PCNL and standard PCNL in the management of renal stones. Methods A prospective comparative study was conducted at the Department of Urology, Chittag

This study aimed to compare the totally tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy and standard percutaneous nephrolithotomy techniques regarding their rates of success and complications in patients with kidney stones. Patients were randomly assigned to two groups. Forty-four patients (24 men; mean age: 50.40±2.02 years) received totally tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL; no nephrostomy catheter or ureteral catheter after PCNL) and 40 patients (18 men; mean age: 49.95 ± 13.38 years) underwent standard PCNL (a nephrostomy catheter and ureteral catheter were used after PCNL). All surgeries

OBJECTIVES: Nephrolithiasis has been reported in 20-28% of patients, of whom 50% are symptomatic for stone disease and 20% require definite urologic intervention. The management of nephrolithiasis includes oral alkali dissolution therapy, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy and surgical treatment. In such patients, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) as a method of stone treatment has been reported in few cases with limited experience. The aim of this study is to present our experience of PNL in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and assessing the outcome results.

The therapeutic management of the complications of percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) depends on the early recognition of these complications. A review of 720 cases revealed the incidence of significant complications to be less than 4%. An algorithm was developed as a guideline for the diagnosis and management of complications of PNL. Early complications included transient bleeding (83 cases), extravasation of urine (52 cases), significant infection (11 cases [2 with septicemia and shock]), and migration of stone fragments into the retroperitoneum (7 cases). Nonrenal complications were present

BACKGROUND: At present, few articles on percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) for renal calculi and renal pelvic tumors detected by intraoperative biopsy exist, which has provided limited guidance for clinical practice. In this article, we aimed to further study the relationship between renal calculi and renal pelvic tumors.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients with abnormal mucosal biopsy results who underwent PCNL for kidney stones in the Urology Department of Peking University People's Hospital from January 2011 to November 2021.
RESULTS: In total, 2,801 pati

OBJECTIVE: Throughout the history, many devices have been used for breaking urinary tract stones. StoneBreaker (LMA Urology, Gland, Switzerland) is a second generation of intracorporeal lithotripter, pneumatic and portable, which adds several new advantages, like effectiveness in stone fragmentation and easy handling, very useful during percutaneous lithotripsy.
METHODS/RESULTS: We report the case of a 40 year-old male patient, with a left kidney pyelic lithiasis, who was treated by percutaneous lithotripsy, under general anaesthesia, with StoneBreaker (LMA Urology, Gland, Switzerland) as lit

Percutaneous nephrostomies (PN) were created with teflon fascial dilators under fluoroscopic guidance, to implant stones bilaterally into the renal pelves of five dogs weighing 7 to 35 kg. Between one and seven stones of 0.25 to 1.00 cm diameter were implanted into each renal pelvis. Two to 4 weeks later, PN tracts were recreated, and the implanted renal stones were successfully removed under fluoroscopic and endoscopic visualization. Results of gross and histopathologic evaluation of the kidneys 2, 7, 14, 30, and 90 days after stone removal showed minimal, localized renal parenchymal trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Traditionally, a pigtail catheter (PCN) is placed for preoperative renal access before performing percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). However, PCN can hamper the passage of the guidewire to the ureter, due to which, access tract can be lost. Therefore, Kumpe Access Catheter (KMP) has been proposed for preoperative renal access before PCNL. In this study, we analyzed the efficacy and safety of KMP for surgical outcomes in modified supine PCNL compared to those in PCN.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From July 2017 to December 2020, 232 patients underwent modified supine PCNL at a single

OBJECTIVE: To compare the PERC-tic technique, described as placement of dual wires under fluoroscopic guidance adjacent to the stone within the obstructed calyx, to standard percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) with working wires secured down the ureter.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent a PCNL procedure between October 2016 and November 2018. Patients undergoing the PERC-tic technique were compared to patients undergoing standard PCNL. Regression models evaluated if PERC-tic PCNL was associated with equivalent stone-free rates to standard PC

PURPOSE: The necessity of nephrostomy tube after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) has been called into question in modern series. We sought to examine differences in postoperative complications and outcomes of tubeless PCNL versus standard PCNL at our institution.
METHODS: A retrospective review of our institutional stone database was conducted from January 2016 to December 2021 for patients who had undergone either tubeless PCNL, defined by placement of only an internal ureteral stent, or standard PCNL, which involved placement of an externalized nephrostomy tube. Patients were excluded i
