Nerve compression syndromes in ALS: a retrospective analysis in 554 patients.

We retrospectively screened a large cohort of 554 ALS patients with regard to documented nerve compression syndromes and identified 23 patients, mostly with carpal tunnel syndrome. Patients could be subdivided into three groups. Group A comprised 13 patients in whom nerve compression was apparently confused with early ALS signs. Group B consisted of six patients diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome who had experienced improvement after surgery years before they eventually developed ALS. Group C consisted of four patients who, after diagnosis of ALS, additionally developed a nerve compression

The Use of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound for Diagnosis of Peripheral Nerve Compression Syndromes.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound has emerged as a reasonable alternative to electrodiagnostic studies in the diagnostic work-up of carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, and other peripheral nerve compression syndromes. Chronic nerve compression results in nerve edema, which can be measured using ultrasound and reported as increased cross-sectional area. If the cross-sectional area exceeds predetermined cutoffs, a diagnosis can be made. The purpose of this review was to summarize the literature regarding the use of ultrasound for the diagnosis of peripheral nerve compression syndromes.

[Nerve compression syndromes of the median and radial nerves at the elbow].

Nerve compression syndromes of the median and radial nerves at the elbow are usually caused by a combination of traction and pressure and are mainly characterized by loss of strength and dull, localized elbow pain. Muscular functional impairments can occur, whereas sensory impairments are less common. The diagnostics including a detailed medical history, neurological examination with, for example, lateral comparison muscle testing and imaging procedures such as X‑ray, sonography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are essential. In the early stages, conservative treatment with immobilization a

[Diagnostic imaging of nerve compression syndrome].

Compression-induced neuropathy of peripheral nerves can cause severe pain of the foot and ankle. Early diagnosis is important to institute prompt treatment and to minimize potential injury. Although clinical examination combined with electrophysiological studies remain the cornerstone of the diagnostic work-up, in certain cases, imaging may provide key information with regard to the exact anatomic location of the lesion or aid in narrowing the differential diagnosis. In other patients with peripheral neuropathies of the foot and ankle, imaging may establish the etiology of the condition and pr

Special issue: nerve compression syndromes "Brachioradialis, or "High Wartenberg", syndrome - compression of the sensory branch of the radial nerve in the proximal forearm.

PURPOSE: Compression of the sensory branch of the radial nerve (SBRN) in the proximal forearm is an uncommon condition, leading to both motor and sensory deficits. The aim of this study is to assess the surgical outcomes of SBRN release at the level of the brachioradialis arcade. METHODS: A retrospective study of prospectively collected data was conducted on patients undergoing brachioradialis release (BRR) from March 2014 to March 2021. The measured outcomes included quick-DASH (Disability of the Arm Shoulder Hand questionnaire), work-DASH, visual analog scale (VAS) scores for pain, and pati

Brain Network Changes in Lumbar Disc Herniation Induced Chronic Nerve Roots Compression Syndromes.

Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) induced nerve compression syndromes have been a prevalent problem with complex neural mechanisms. Changes in distributed brain areas are involved in the occurrence and persistence of syndromes. The present study aimed to investigate the changes of brain functional network in LDH patients with chronic sciatica using graph theory analysis. A total of thirty LDH adults presenting L4 and/or L5 root (s) compression syndromes (LDH group) and thirty age-, sex-, BMI- and education-matched healthy control (HC group) were recruited for functional MRI scan. Whole-brain functi

Treatment of Peripheral Nerve Compression Syndromes of the Upper Extremities: a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Nerve compression syndromes are referred to as chronic irritation or pressure palsies of peripheral nerves in areas of preformed anatomical constriction. Carpal tunnel syndrome is the most common nerve compression syndrome, followed by cubital tunnel syndrome. In addition, less frequent nerve compression syndromes of the upper extremities that affect the median, ulnar or radial nerves have been described. This review provides an overview of current treatment options for nerve compression syndromes of the upper extremities. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic overview. METHODS: Based on esta

[Vascular compression syndromes of the cranial nerves].

The blood vessels which are running nearby the cranial nerves and the brainstem can be elongated; curves and loops of the vessels may develop mostly due to the degenerative alterations of ageing and these vessels can compress the surrounding neural elements. The authors report a review of vascular compression syndromes based on the literature and their own experience. The typical clinical symptoms of the syndromes subserving the proper diagnosis, the pathomechanism, the significance of imaging especially the magnetic resonance angiography, the experience with the surgical technique of microvas

[Tarsal tunnel syndrome. Nerve compression syndrome in the foot].

Pathological changes in sensation over the sole of the foot do not always correspond to the full area of distribution of the posterior tibial nerve. Some neurologists advise separate examination of the tibial nerve, the medial and lateral plantar nerves, in order to ascertain whether either or both might be affected. 60 preparations of cadaveric feet in the Department of Anatomy were examined. Using a measuring grid, the position and size of the nerves in the tarsal tunnel were assessed and the facial band which define and divide the osteofibrous canal delineated. The corners of the measuring

Syndromes of compression of the median nerve in the proximal forearm (pronator teres syndrome; anterior interosseous nerve syndrome).

Entrapment of the median nerve in the proximal forearm is seen in two forms: the pronator teres syndrome, and the anterior interosseous nerve (or Kiloh-Nevin) syndrome. Both syndromes are rare, and they comprised approximately 1% of the compression syndromes of the upper limb which were treated operatively by the authors. The symptoms, signs, etiologies, and intraoperative findings are discussed. It is pointed out that certain of the clinical features may resemble those of irritation of the median nerve by a supracondylar process or Struthers' ligament. Although both proximal median entrapment

Modeling Nerve Compression in Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Nerve function loss can result from a variety of conditions that are either sudden onset like head and spinal cord trauma or slowly develop from chronic pressure as in the case of carpal tunnel syndrome. In either case we see compression ofthe nerve ultimately resulting in axon demyelination and loss of signal conduction. For chronic conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, treatments focus on alleviating symptoms. Some patients undergo surgery which can be successful in relieving pressure on the median nerve by inflamed surrounding tendons. Symptoms of classical carpal tunnel syndrome have

Median nerve compression in Weill-Marchesani syndrome.

Weill-Marchesani syndrome is a rare, generalized disorder of connective tissue manifested by short stature, brachymorphia, and spherophakia. Inheritance is autosomal recessive. In the less than 50 reported cases, joint stiffness in the hands and thenar atrophy have been noted in adults. A kindred is reported here in which release of multiple trigger fingers and bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome in childhood has improved hand function in a brother and sister.

Proximal Median Nerve Compression: Pronator Syndrome.

Pronator syndrome (PS) is a compressive neuropathy of the median nerve in the proximal forearm, with symptoms that often overlap with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Because electrodiagnostic studies are often negative in PS, making the correct diagnosis can be challenging. All patients should be initially managed with nonsurgical treatment, but surgical intervention has been shown to result in satisfactory outcomes. Several surgical techniques have been described, with most outcomes data based on retrospective case series. It is essential for clinicians to have a thorough understanding of media
