Alagille syndrome associated with myelinated retinal nerve fibers.

PURPOSE: Alagille syndrome is frequently associated with optic disc anomalies. This is the first report of a patient with Alagille syndrome and myelinated retinal nerve fibers. METHODS: A 5-year-old female patient was referred to the Centre for Ophthalmology before a liver transplantation. Ocular examinations including slit lamp examination and funduscopy as well as anterior segment and fundus images were performed. RESULTS: We observed myelinated retinal nerve fibers in both eyes of a 5-year-old female patient with Alagille syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: A broad spectrum of ocular anomalies is ass

Distribution of hepatic nerve fibers in liver diseases.

Autonomic hyperactivity with increased cardiac output and other manifestations occurs in patients with both cirrhosis and noncirrhotic portal hypertension. The role of the disordered hepatic autonomic innervation in the mediation of these abnormalities is unknown. We have studied the hepatic nerve network and associated extracellular matrix proteins in patients with portal hypertension (alcoholic cirrhosis, extrahepatic portal vein obstruction, idiopathic portal hypertension), and in patients without portal hypertension (alcoholic hepatitis, psoriasis before and after treatment with methotrexa

Histamine-immunoreactive nerve fibers in the rat brain.

A new immunohistochemical method that utilizes carbodiimide as a tissue fixative was applied to study the distribution of histamine-immunoreactive neuronal fibers and terminals in the rat brain. Immunoreactive fibers were observed in almost all major regions of the brain. They were most numerous in the different hypothalamic nuclei. Dense networks of immunoreactive fibers were also seen in the medial septum, nucleus of the diagonal band and ventral tegmental area. A moderate density of fibers was seen throughout the cerebral cortex, in some parts of the olfactory bulb and tubercle, bed nucleus

[Electric stimulation of auditory nerve fibers. Experimental study].

The authors tested in animal experiments the effectiveness of electrical stimulation of acoustic nerve fibres. To guinea pigs platinum-iridium electrodes were implanted in the round window of the cochlea. The receptors of the inner ear were functionally eliminated by the local application of the ototoxic antibiotic gentamicin. Cortical responses produced by electric stimulation of the contralateral ear and acoustic stimulation of the ipsilateral intact ear were recorded. The threshold for producing a cortical response by the electric stimulus was lowest at the frequency of 0.5 kHz and rose wit

Regeneration of taste buds by nongustatory nerve fibers.

Previous cross-reinnervation studies in situ by other investigators have demonstrated that cutaneous sensory and motor axons are incapable of trophically supporting mammalian taste buds. The present experiments examined the gustatory trophic potency of chemosensory and barosensory axons of the carotid sinus nerve. We report here that morphologically normal taste buds appeared on cat circumvallate papillae at 2 to 19 months after cross-anastomosis of the carotid sinus and lingual nerves, branches of the IXth cranial (glossopharyngeal) nerve. However, neurophysiologic and histologic data also in

Transdermal tibial nerve optogenetic stimulation targeting C-fibers.

Purpose: To explore whether stimulation of C-fibers in tibial nerves can induce bladder inhibition by optogenetic transdermal illumination. Methods: Ten rats were injected with AAV2/6-hSyn-ChR2(H134R)-EYFP into the tibial nerves. Transurethral cystometry was performed 4 weeks after the virus injection. Illumination (473-nm blue light at 100 mW) was performed with the fiber positioned above the right hind paw near the ankle. The light transmission efficiency was examined with a laser power meter. The effects on cystometry were compared before and after illumination with the bladder infused with

Morphometry of dermal nerve fibers in human skin.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the innervation density of dermal nerves in human skin biopsies by bright-field immunohistochemistry. METHODS: The size of dermal area where nerve length was quantified was validated in 30 skin biopsy sections (5 controls and 5 patients with small-fiber neuropathy [SFN]). It was obtained dividing an area of 200-μm depth from the dermal-epidermal junction into 4 equal portions. The length of dermal nerves (DNFL) was measured into 150 sections (25 controls and 25 patients with SFN) and values per millimeter of epidermis (DNFL/mm) and dermal area (DNFL/mm2) were obt

Bilateral hypermetropia, myelinated retinal nerve fibers, and amblyopia.

A 14-year-old hyperopic female with poor vision in both eyes was evaluated for ophthalmic and systemic diseases. The patient had bilateral retinal fiber myelination and greater vision loss in the more hyperopic eye. This was a rare case of reverse Straatsma syndrome, the clinical presentation which may be accompanied with significant vision loss.

Regeneration of optic nerve fibers of adult mammals.

The pathway from the retina to the brain in mammals provides a well-defined model system for investigation of not only surviving axotomy but also axonal regeneration of injured neurons. Here I introduce our recent works on axonal regeneration in the optic nerve (OpN) of adult cats. Fibers of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) extend beyond the crush site of OpN with injections of a macrophage stimulator (oxidized galectin-1) or a Rho kinase (ROCK) inhibitor (Y-39983 or Y-27632) while axonal extension is blocked with injection of saline. Elongation of crushed optic fibers, however, is slowed after 2

[Myelinated nerve fibers associated with cilioretinal artery occlusion].

Although the myelinated nerve fibers are considered as benign, cases associated with retinal vascular abnormalities (telangiectasis, neovascularization, vascular occlusions) have recently been reported, suggesting a possible pathogenic correlation between these elements. Our observation presents a 44-year-old patient, with a sudden decrease of visual acuity in the right eye, discal and peridiscal myelinated nerve fibers, associated with cilioretinal artery occlusion. The general clinical and laboratory examination, except for a drug stabilized arterial hypertension, did not reveal other local

Simultaneous Quantification of Unmyelinated Nerve Fibers in Sural Nerve and in Skin.

Peripheral polyneuropathies are common and their diagnosis may be challenging. We compared the results from sural-nerve and skin biopsies in 33 patients with a polyneuropathy and neuropathic pain examined in our hospital over a 6-year period. The biopsies were all from the same lower limb of each patient. Intraepidermal nerve fiber (IENF) densities in the skin were determined by fluorescence microscopy; unmyelinated fiber densities in sural-nerve biopsies (UFNB) were determined by electron microscopy. There was no correlation with age or gender in either biopsy type; there was a weak trend to

Effects of age on nerve fibers in the rhesus monkey optic nerve.

During normal aging there is a reduction in white matter volume in the cerebral hemispheres and structural abnormalities in myelin in some parts of the central nervous system, but whether nerve fibers are lost with age and whether the myelin changes are ubiquitous is not known. Studying the optic nerve, which is a circumscribed bundle of nerve fibers, offers an opportunity to gain further insight into the effects of normal aging on white matter. The present study examined the optic nerves from young (4-10 years) and old (27-33 years) rhesus monkeys using light and electron microscopy. These ne

Delayed Surgical Reversal of Optic Nerve Compression Leads to Exponential Degeneration of Optic Nerve Fibers and Selective Sparing of the Small Fibers.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of surgical reversal of experimental optic nerve compression in treating persistent compressive optic neuropathy and to explore the relationship between surgical outcomes and the timing of the procedure. METHODS: Surgical reversal procedures (decompression surgery) were conducted at five time intervals: 1, 3, and 7 days and 2 and 3 weeks following optic nerve compression in a rabbit model. The groups were labeled as DC-1d, DC-3d, DC-7d, DC-2w, and DC-3w, respectively. The study investigated changes in ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness using spectral-

Low density of sympathetic nerve fibers relative to substance P-positive nerve fibers in lesional skin of chronic pruritus and prurigo nodularis.

BACKGROUND: In prurigo nodularis (PN), an increase in the density of dermal substance P-positive (SP+) sensory nerve fibers has been demonstrated. In addition, the density of sympathetic nerve fibers is unchanged. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the density and balance of sensory and sympathetic dermal nerves in pruritus on normally appearing skin in comparison to PN. METHODS: In a parallel investigation in lesional and non-lesional skin routine histological and immunofluorescence staining against SP and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) were performed. RESULTS: We found an increased density of

Nerve fibers innervating the cranial and spinal meninges: morphology of nerve fiber terminals and their structural integration.

Pachymeninx and leptomeninx of cranial cavity and spine are considerably different in their collagenous fiber texture, cellular composition, vascularization, and innervation. The majority of meningeal nerve fibers terminate as free nerve endings whereas encapsulated and lamellated nerve terminals additionally occur in higher vertebrates including man. With respect to nerve fiber classification, arborization pattern, topography, and organization of the microenvironment at the termination site afferent and efferent nerve terminals are differentiated. Only the dura mater and the pial subcompartme
