Central nervous system tuberculosis.

Central nervous system tuberculosis is a rare presentation of active tuberculosis and accounts for about 1% of cases (1). The three clinical categories include meningitis, intracranial tuberculomas, and spinal tuberculous arachnoiditis. We report a case of a young man who presented with active pulmonary tuberculosis in addition to tuberculous meningitis and the presence of numerous intracranial tuberculomas.

Imaging nervous system activity.

This unit describes methods for loading ion- and voltage-sensitive dyes into neurons, with a particular focus on the spinal cord as a model system. In addition, we describe the use of these dyes to visualize neural activity. Although the protocols described here concern spinal networks in culture or an intact in vitro preparation, they can be, and have been, widely used in other parts of the nervous system.

Central nervous system histoplasmosis.

Involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) is recognized clinically in 5% to 10% of patients with progressive disseminated histoplasmosis. The risk of developing CNS histoplasmosis is increased in individuals with impaired cellular immunity, but not all patients with this condition are immunocompromised. Clinical syndromes include chronic meningitis, focal parenchymal lesions of the brain or spinal cord, stroke due to infected emboli, and diffuse encephalitis. CNS histoplasmosis should be considered in any patient with one of these syndromes who has resided in an area endemic for histopla

Central nervous system lipomas.

The lipomas of the central nervous system are rare lesions of congenital origin and are located in the medial line and especially in corpus callosum. Intramedullary spinal lipomas can be seen in the life span of 30 years of age and most frequently coincide with initial puberty period. Magnetic resonance imaging and computerized tomography together with clinical trials are of crucial importance for diagnosis. The first case: A two-year-aged girl who had lipoma in quadrigeminal cistern and who suffered from encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis has been clinically studied. The fascial lipoma of t

[Autonomic nervous system examinations].

Autonomic nervous system plays a critical role in the regulation of cardiovascular system. We reviewed the autonomic nervous system examinations. Time and frequency domain analyses in heart rate variability is obtained from short- and long-term ECG and have predictive values of prognosis in various conditions of heart disease. Baroreflex testing evaluates autonomic modulation of arterial pressure. Baroreflex sensitivity is expressed by the(arterial blood pressure)/(RR interval in ECG) slope in response to infusion of nitroglycerine or phenylephrine. Decrease in baroreflex sensitivity is superi

Central nervous system tuberculosis.

Involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, particularly meningitis, is the most severe form of tuberculous infection. Parenchymal CNS involvement can occur in the form of tuberculoma or, more rarely, abscess. Although surgery was initially advocated as the mainstay of therapy, more recent evidence suggests that parenchymal forms of CNS tuberculosis can be cured with medical treatment alone. Also, damage of the spinal cord, roots, and spine can occur in the form of spinal meningitis, radiculomyelitis, spondylitis, or spinal cord infarction.

Central nervous system anomalies.

The authors review the most common congenital anomalies of the central nervous system (CNS): neural tube defects (NTDs), ventriculomegaly/holoprosencephaly, hydranencephaly, holoprosencephaly sequence, iniencephaly, and microcephaly. They emphasize the importance of the diagnostic tools (biochemical markers of the maternal serum, ultrasound screening, invasive techniques), methods which are complementary to each other.

Central nervous system leukemia.

The treatment of central nervous system (CNS) leukemia still poses a significant challenge to the clinical oncologist despite significant advances in therapeutic strategies that are directly targeted at the CNS. This article reviews the evolving definition of CNS leukemia, the current status of therapy for the prevention and treatment of overt CNS leukemia, pharmacological considerations in the treatment of CNS leukemia, and the longterm sequelae of CNS-directed therapy, focusing on articles that have been published in the past 2 years. New agents and treatment strategies for the treatment and

Paraneoplastic nervous system syndromes.

Recent progress in the understanding of the paraneoplastic neurologic syndromes has included further deliniation of the clinical syndromes and their treatment, attempts at standardization of the diagnostic nomenclature, investigations of pathogenetic mechanisms, and molecular characterization of the paraneoplastic antigens with implications as to their biologic relevance. Despite more than 30 years of investigation, the pathogenesis of these presumably autoimmune conditions remains unclear. Furthermore, no effective therapy has been identified for these conditions, with the possible exception

The enteric nervous system.

The enteric nervous system (ENS) is a unique component of the autonomic nervous system found within the wall of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. What distinguishes the ENS is its size, containing as many neurons as the spinal cord, and its ability to function in the absence of connections to the central nervous system.

The peripheral nervous system.

The peripheral nervous system (PNS) represents a highly heterogeneous entity with a broad range of functions, ranging from providing communication between the brain and the body to controlling development, stem cell niches and regenerative processes. According to the structure and function, the PNS can be subdivided into sensory, motor (i.e. the nerve fibers of motor neurons), autonomic and enteric domains. Different types of neurons correspond to these domains and recent progress in single-cell transcriptomics has enabled the discovery of new neuronal subtypes and improved the previous cell-t

Aquaporins in Nervous System.

Aquaporins (AQPs) mediate water flux between the four distinct water compartments in the central nervous system (CNS). In the present chapter, we mainly focus on the expression and function of the nine AQPs expressed in the CNS, which include five members of aquaporin subfamily: AQP1, AQP4, AQP5, AQP6, and AQP8; three members of aquaglyceroporin subfamily: AQP3, AQP7, and AQP9; and one member of superaquaporin subfamily: AQP11. In addition, AQP1, AQP2, and AQP4 expressed in the peripheral nervous system are also reviewed. AQP4, the predominant water channel in the CNS, is involved both in the

The enteric nervous system.

Of all the organ systems in the body, the gastrointestinal tract is the most complicated in terms of the numbers of structures involved, each with different functions, and the numbers and types of signaling molecules utilized. The digestion of food and absorption of nutrients, electrolytes, and water occurs in a hostile luminal environment that contains a large and diverse microbiota. At the core of regulatory control of the digestive and defensive functions of the gastrointestinal tract is the enteric nervous system (ENS), a complex system of neurons and glia in the gut wall. In this review,

Central nervous system tuberculosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis is the most devastating form of tuberculosis (TB), with mortality and or neurological sequelae in over half of individuals. We reviewed original research and systematic reviews published since 1 January 2019 for new developments in CNS TB pathophysiology, diagnosis, management and prognosis. RECENT FINDINGS: Insight in the pathophysiology is increasing steadily since the landmark studies in 1933, focussing on granuloma type classification, the relevance of the M. tuberculosis bacterial burden and the wide range of immunological resp

Central Nervous System Lymphomas.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma is a rare, aggressive extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma confined to the brain, eyes, CSF, or spinal cord without systemic, non-CNS involvement. This article reviews the clinical presentation, imaging characteristics, diagnostic workup, novel pathophysiologic insights, and treatment of immunocompetent patients with primary CNS lymphoma. RECENT FINDINGS: The prognosis of primary CNS lymphoma has significantly improved over the past few decades because of the introduction of and widespread use of high-dose methotrexate, which is now

Central nervous system tuberculosis.

The purpose of this article is to review the many facets of central nervous system tuberculosis (CNS-TB). The entities described are tuberculous meningitis (TBM) and its complications, spinal cord disorders, tuberculomas and co-infection with the human immune-deficiency virus (HIV). The latter has become a common problem worldwide becoming a more fulminant disease. The accuracy of the conventional and the modern molecular techniques for the diagnosis of TBM have a high specificity but a low to moderate sensitivity. Computerised tomographic scans and magnetic resonance imaging have many charact
