Effects of a Multimodal Approach Using Buprenorphine with/without Meloxicam on Food Intake, Body Weight, Nest Consolidating Behavior, Burrowing Behavior, and Gastrointestinal Tissues in Postoperative Male Mice.

Distress affects animal welfare and scientific data validity. There is a lack of reports on the effects of multimodal analgesic approaches in mice. In this study, under the hypothesis that a multimodal analgesic protocol using buprenorphine with meloxicam has analgesic effects, we evaluated the effects of a multimodal analgesic protocol using buprenorphine with meloxicam on the well-being of mice during analgesic administration by changing the dosage of meloxicam. A total of 42 Slc:ICR male mice were categorized into nonsurgical and surgical groups (7 mice per group) and treated with an anesth

Inflammatory and Nested Testicular Sex Cord Tumor: A Novel Neoplasm With Aggressive Clinical Behavior and Frequent EWSR1::ATF1 Gene Fusions.

A subset of malignant testicular sex cord tumors (TSCTs), heretofore interpreted as Sertoli cell tumors, not otherwise specified, exhibits distinctive morphologic features that partially overlap with those of seminoma. In this study, we evaluated the clinicopathologic and molecular characteristics of 13 such tumors. The patients were 20 to 73 years old (median, 36 y), and all with available data presented with testicular masses (median size, 3 cm), with 2 having synchronous retroperitoneal metastases. All 11 patients with available follow-up developed metastases to retroperitoneal lymph nodes,

Explainable machine learning for mental health prediction from social media behavior: a nested cross-validation study with SHAP and LIME interpretability.

Social media behavior is a promising source of early indicators for psychological distress; however, predictive models often lack transparency, limiting their adoption in mental health settings. This paper describes an explainable machine learning framework for predicting self-reported depression risk based on behavioral features collected from 481 anonymized social media users. Three supervised learning models were tested using a nested 5 × 5 cross-validation strategy, with Random Forest yielding the strongest performance (accuracy = 84.2%, AUC = 0.88). Model calibration analysis using reliab

Toward an understanding of the neurobiology of "just right" perceptions: nest building in the female rabbit as a possible model for compulsive behavior and the perception of task completion.

Little is known of the neural mechanisms underlying the subjective experience of task completion and the subsequent inhibition of behavior. The preparturient female rabbit displays a stereotyped "straw carrying" behavior, in which she repeatedly collects straw and carries it into a nest box (located within the home cage), resulting in a finished maternal straw nest within 3 h. Thereafter, straw carrying is inhibited for many hours, even if the original nest is removed. We tested whether the performance of straw carrying behavior or the perception of a completed nest were necessary prerequisite

Improving Welfare in Suckling Goat Kids During Winter: Impact of Heat-Retentive Kid Nest on Hiding, Playing, Suckling, and Nursing Behaviors.

The welfare of winter-born suckling goat kids is important, as their thermoregulatory systems are still developing. The pilot study investigated the impact of heat-retentive kid nest (HRKN) on hiding, playing and suckling behaviors of kids born during winter. Twelve newborn kids were divided into two groups along with their respective dams. The HRKN, designed to provide warmer microclimatic conditions, served as ancillary housing for the HRKN group, while the control group was housed intensively without HRKN. Given the lack of independent replicates in each treatment group (n = 1 per treatment

The self-reinforcing cycle under dual constraints-a study of the behavioral logic of urban empty-nest older adults substituting self-medication for formal medical treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Against the stark backdrop of China's rapidly aging population and the high prevalence of chronic diseases among the older adults, urban empty-nesters face a dual challenge stemming from inadequate intergenerational support and heightened health vulnerability. A deeper understanding of their illness coping behavior is therefore critically needed. METHODS: This study employs grounded theory methodology, conducting in-depth interviews with 25 empty-nest older adults in H City. A total of 290,000 words of interview texts were collected to generate a theoretical model, systematicall

Bee Tracker-an open-source machine learning-based video analysis software for the assessment of nesting and foraging performance of cavity-nesting solitary bees.

The foraging and nesting performance of bees can provide important information on bee health and is of interest for risk and impact assessment of environmental stressors. While radiofrequency identification (RFID) technology is an efficient tool increasingly used for the collection of behavioral data in social bee species such as honeybees, behavioral studies on solitary bees still largely depend on direct observations, which is very time-consuming. Here, we present a novel automated methodological approach of individually and simultaneously tracking and analyzing foraging and nesting behavior

Plasma hormone levels in the green turtles Chelonia mydas during peak period of nesting at Ras Al-Hadd-Oman.

Circulating estradiol (E(2)), progesterone (Pro), testosterone, and corticosterone (B) levels were monitored in the green turtles Chelonia mydas during different nesting phases. Successful nesting includes emergence from sea, chamber and nest excavation, oviposition, burying the nest, and returning to sea. Unsuccessful nesting includes chamber and nest excavations but without oviposition. Blood samples were taken from the cervical sinus and collected within 5-min of capture to minimize stress. The samples were collected between 2000 and 0100 h during the peak season (May-October). High-perform

Impairment of nesting behaviour in 3xTg-AD mice.

Deterioration in executive functions and daily life activities (DLA) are early signs of Alzheimer's disease (AD) that signal the need for caregiver attention. We have addressed this issue in the 3xTg-AD mice model for AD and studied nesting behaviour as a natural DLA of parental structures as well as at early- (6 month-old) and advanced-stages (12 month-old) of the disease in isolated animals. The results show genetic, gender and age-dependent impairment of nesting behaviour but also aware about the relevance of factors such as the temporal course of nest construction and the nesting material.

Effects of Cage Enrichment on Behavior, Welfare and Outcome Variability in Female Mice.

The manner in which laboratory rodents are housed is driven by economics (minimal use of space and resources), ergonomics (ease of handling and visibility of animals), hygiene, and standardization (reduction of variation). This has resulted in housing conditions that lack sensory and motor stimulation and restrict the expression of species-typical behavior. In mice, such housing conditions have been associated with indicators of impaired welfare, including abnormal repetitive behavior (stereotypies, compulsive behavior), enhanced anxiety and stress reactivity, and thermal stress. However, due

Bird-Scented Nests as a Mechanism for Olfactory Homing in a Burrow-Nesting Seabird.

AbstractNavigation to and from a familiar site is a common animal behavior called homing. Many species use olfactory environmental landmarks or scents deposited in the environment by themselves or their conspecifics for homing. Birds regularly commute to and from their nest, and olfaction, an underappreciated sense in birds, may facilitate this behavior. Burrow-nesting seabirds, for example, rely on olfaction to locate their breeding colony and to identify their burrow, but the specific chemical information they use is unclear. We examined the chemical profiles of the colony landscape and its

Striatal adenosine A2A receptor involvement in normal and large nest building deer mice: Perspectives on compulsivity and anxiety.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by recurring obsessive thoughts and repetitive behaviors that are often associated with anxiety and perturbations in cortico-striatal signaling. Given the suboptimal response of OCD to current serotonergic interventions, there is a need to better understand the psychobiological mechanisms that may underlie the disorder. In this regard, investigations into adenosinergic processes might be fruitful. Indeed, adenosine modulates both anxiety- and motor behavioral output. Thus, we aimed to explore the potential associations between compulsive-lik

Nest building as a missing piece in biparental care.

Many birds practise biparental care, providing useful systems to study its evolution. Although nest building has largely been ignored as biparental behaviour, parental conflict and cooperation could begin during nest building, before incubation and offspring provisioning. While there are ample data on biparental incubation and provisioning in model species like zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), nest-building data largely concern material collection and preference in the males, not building by the females. Here, we collected data on building by both female and male zebra finches to test whet

Steroid hormones and aggression in female Galápagos marine iguanas.

We studied steroid hormone patterns and aggression during breeding in female Galápagos marine iguanas (Amblyrhynchus cristatus). Females display vigorously towards courting males after copulating (female-male aggression), as well as fight for and defend nest sites against other females (female-female aggression). To understand the neuroendocrine basis of this aggressive behavior, we examined changes in testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), corticosterone (CORT), and progesterone (P4) during the mating and nesting periods, and then measured levels in nesting females captured during aggressive inter

Neurochemical correlates of male polymorphism and alternative reproductive tactics in the Azorean rock-pool blenny, Parablennius parvicornis.

In the common Azorean rock-pool blenny, Parablennius parvicornis, males exhibit alternative reproductive morphologies: (1) larger males defend nest sites, provide parental care, have anal glands (involved in pheromone release), testicular glands, and low gonad:body weight ratio (GSI) and (2) smaller, younger, males do not defend nests, have reduced glands and high GSI. These smaller non-nesting males behave as satellites (associated with nests) or sneakers (moving among nests), attempting to achieve parasitic fertilizations via sperm competition. In non-mammals, arginine vasotocin (AVT) is a k

Cognitive ethology of nest building in a shell-dwelling cichlid.

Across animal taxa, nest-building behavior is performed using a generalizable and flexible action sequence. In order to accomplish its goal (a stable nest), the brain appears to compare intermediate steps in the process to stored neural representations that are reminiscent of cognitive templates. Deviations from these templates drive progress, preferences, and corrections in the execution of this behavior. Here, we investigated the stereotypy vs. plasticity of nest building by the cichlid Lamprologus ocellatus, a fish species that manipulates abandoned snail shells to build shelters for breedi

Trade-offs in avian parental care: a review of theory and meta-analysis of brood size manipulations.

The selective forces shaping parental care have been studied for over 50 years. While theoretical and experimental work has yielded qualitative progress, the large body of empirical work testing predictions about parental investment based on life-history trade-offs has yet to be synthesized. We first provide an overview of the core life-history theory exploring how selection might shape parental care. We then conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis on studies that experimentally manipulated brood size in birds, a widely used experimental approach to manipulate parental investment. We ext

Why do birds construct nest tails? A test of disruptive camouflage in the blue manakin.

Nests are extended phenotypes capable of providing brood protection against predators, and because they are motionless structures, camouflage is expected to emerge. Birds from different families construct a tail of hung materials underneath their nests, which has been hypothesized to be a type of disruptive camouflage, i.e. an appendage that gives a nest a false shape for hindering detection by predators. Predictions of this hypothesis are that for predators that are visually oriented, nests without a tail are easier to detect, yet this hypothesis never received support likely because predator

"Up" or "down" that makes the difference. How giant honeybees (Apis dorsata) see the world.

A. dorsata builds its large exposed comb high in trees or under ledges of high rocks. The "open" nest of A. dorsata, shielded (only!) by multiple layers of bees, is highly vulnerable to any kind of direct contact or close range attacks from predators. Therefore, guard bees of the outer layer of A. dorsata's nest monitor the vicinity for possible hazards and an effective risk assessment is required. Guard bees, however, are frequently exposed to different objects like leaves, twigs and other tree litter passing the nest from above and falling to the ground. Thus, downward movement of objects pa

Effects of deafening on the development of nestling and juvenile vocalizations in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus).

The effects of complete and partial cochlear extirpation at ages 9-11 days posthatch were assessed in 5 nestling budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) to determine if auditory feedback is necessary for the production of nestling vocalizations. Although early deafening had no effect on the production of food-begging calls produced during the first 2 weeks posthatch, deafening did disrupt the expected transition from these early calls to the longer and more complex frequency-modulated, patterned food-begging calls normally appearing 3-4 weeks posthatch. All birds sustaining either complete or pa
