Sensory neural conduction of median nerve from digits and palm stimulation in carpal tunnel syndrome.

The median sensory nerve conduction between ring finger and wrist is a suitable parameter for early detection of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), although shorter segments of median nerve have also been proposed for the same goal. In order to assess the relative diagnostic value of the sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) of the third palmar branch versus the SNCV of the second palmar branch, generally performed until now, we studied 62 patients with typical signs and symptoms of CTS. The following parameters were evaluated by surface recording: orthodromic SNCVs in digit-wrist segments for m

Collagen IV outperforms alternative ECM coatings to preserve human neural progenitor properties on electrically conductive neural interfaces.

Human neural progenitor cells (hNPCs) are promising candidates for neural repair, however, their in vitro expansion commonly relies on Matrigel, a tumor-derived and xenogeneic matrix that limits translational applicability. In this study, we evaluated defined extracellular matrix (ECM) coatings, including poly-L-ornithine (PLO), laminin, PLO/laminin, and collagen IV, as alternatives to Matrigel for hNPC culture under conventional and electrically stimulated conditions. We found that collagen IV consistently supported hNPC viability, proliferation, and maintenance of progenitor markers Nestin a

Facial Nerve Conduction Block during Vestibular Schwannoma Surgery: A Rare and Unclarified Transient Neural Dysfunction.

Preservation of facial nerve function while achieving sufficient tumor removal is a key objective in vestibular schwannoma surgery, and continuous facial nerve monitoring provides real-time, quantitative, and functional assessment of facial nerve during resection. In our experiences of more than 1,900 vestibular schwannoma surgeries, we have occasionally observed an abrupt and marked decrease in monitoring amplitude without any high-risk manipulation such as direct nerve dissection. This rare phenomenon, illustrated by 2 recent cases in this study, was transient or unrelated to postoperative f

Neural conduction impairment of the auditory brainstem in babies with bronchopulmonary dysplasia while being diagnosed.

Brainstem neural conduction was investigated in 78 very low birthweight (VLBW) at 36 weeks of postconceptional age while diagnosing neonatal bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The maximum length sequence technique was used to study brainstem auditory evoked response (MLS BAER). Compared with healthy controls, VLBW babies diagnosed with BPD manifested significant prolongation of wave V latency and I-V, I-III and III-V intervals at all 91-910/s clicks. Those diagnosed without BPD manifested only moderate prolongation of I-V and III-V intervals at higher click rates. There were marked differences

Enzymatically Polymerized Glycolated Conductive Polymers as Soft Electrodes for Neural Bioelectronic Interfaces.

Organic bioelectronics relies on materials capable of efficiently transducing signals between ionic biological environments and electronic devices. Conducting polymers are particularly attractive for this purpose due to their mixed ionic-electronic conductivity, mechanical compliance, and chemical tunability. Among them, bis-ethylenedioxythiophene-thiophene (ETE)-based polymers can be synthesized in situ via mild enzymatic reactions, enabling seamless and substrate-free integration with biological systems. Here, we investigate the impact of hydrophilic side-chain engineering on the physicochem

The methylome in females with adolescent Conduct Disorder: Neural pathomechanisms and environmental risk factors.

Conduct Disorder (CD) is an impairing psychiatric disorder of childhood and adolescence characterized by aggressive and dissocial behavior. Environmental factors such as maternal smoking during pregnancy, socio-economic status, trauma, or early life stress are associated with CD. Although the number of females with CD is rising in Western societies, CD is under-researched in female cohorts. We aimed at exploring the epigenetic signature of females with CD and its relation to psychosocial and environmental risk factors. We performed HpaII sensitive genome-wide methylation sequencing of 49 CD gi

Resting neural activity patterns in auditory brainstem and midbrain in conductive hearing loss.

CONCLUSIONS: Conductive hearing loss (CHL) lowers resting neural activity patterns in the auditory periphery. Such reductions of peripheral auditory activity may influence the developing central brain during early postnatal years when the system is still highly plastic. OBJECTIVES: A common cause of CHL in young children is otitis media; if chronic and/or episodic there may be a risk to speech and language development. In this clinical context we have investigated changes in neural activity patterns in the brainstem and midbrain in an animal model of CHL. METHODS: In a mouse model, a 50-60 d

Directed differentiation of embryonic P19 cells and neural stem cells into neural lineage on conducting PEDOT-PEG and ITO glass substrates.

Differentiation of pluripotent and lineage restricted stem cells such as neural stem cells (NSCs) was studied on conducting substrates of various nature without perturbation of the genome with exogenous genetic material or chemical stimuli. Primary mouse adult neural stem cells (NSCs) and P19 pluripotent embryonal (P19 EC) carcinoma cells were used. Expression levels of neuronal markers β-III-tubulin and neurofilament were evaluated by immunochemistry and flow cytometry. It was shown that the ability of the substrate to induce differentiation directly correlated with its conductivity. Conducti

Rapid Increase in Neural Conduction Time in the Adult Human Auditory Brainstem Following Sudden Unilateral Deafness.

Individuals with sudden unilateral deafness offer a unique opportunity to study plasticity of the binaural auditory system in adult humans. Stimulation of the intact ear results in increased activity in the auditory cortex. However, there are no reports of changes at sub-cortical levels in humans. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate changes in sub-cortical activity immediately before and after the onset of surgically induced unilateral deafness in adult humans. Click-evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to stimulation of the healthy ear were recorded from ten adult

Neural correlates of non-specific skin conductance responses during resting state fMRI.

Skin conductance responses (SCRs) reliably occur in the absence of external stimulation. However, the neural correlates of these non-specific SCRs have been less explored than brain activity associated with stimulus-elicited SCRs. This study modeled spontaneous skin conductance responses observed during an unstructured resting state fMRI scan in 58 adolescents. A Finite Impulse Response (FIR) fMRI model was used to detect any type of hemodynamic response shape time-locked to non-specific SCRs; the shape of these responses was then carefully characterized. The strongest evidence for signal chan

Three dimensional convolutional neural network-based classification of conduct disorder with structural MRI.

Conduct disorder (CD) is a common child and adolescent psychiatric disorder with various representative symptoms, and may cause long-term burden to patients and society. Recently, an increasing number of studies have used deep learning-based approaches, such as convolutional neural network (CNN), to analyze neuroimaging data and to identify biomarkers. In this study, we applied an optimized 3D AlexNet CNN model to automatically extract multi-layer high dimensional features of structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI), and to classify CD from healthy controls (HCs). We acquired high-resoluti

Conductive electrospun scaffolds with electrical stimulation for neural differentiation of conjunctiva mesenchymal stem cells.

An electrical stimulus is a new approach to neural differentiation of stem cells. In this work, the neural differentiation of conjunctiva mesenchymal stem cells (CJMSCs) on a new 3D conductive fibrous scaffold of silk fibroin (SF) and reduced graphene oxide (rGo) were examined. rGo (3.5% w/w) was dispersed in SF-acid formic solution (10% w/v) and conductive nanofibrous scaffold was fabricated using the electrospinning method. SEM and TEM microscopies were used for fibrous scaffold characterization. CJMSCs were cultured on the scaffold and 2 electrical impulse models (Current 1:115 V/m, 100-Hz

Electrochemically prepared composites of graphene oxide and conducting polymers: Cytocompatibility of cardiomyocytes and neural progenitors.

The cytocompatibility of cardiomyocytes derived from embryonic stem cells and neural progenitors, which were seeded on the surface of composite films made of graphene oxide (GO) and polypyrrole (PPy-GO) or poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT-GO) are reported. The GO incorporated in the composite matrix contributes to the patterning of the composite surface, while the electrically conducting PPy and PEDOT serve as ion-to-electron transducers facilitating electrical stimulation/sensing. The films were fabricated by a simple one-step electropolymerization procedure on electrically conducting

Neural processing of socioemotional content in conduct-disordered juvenile offenders with limited prosocial emotions.

BACKGROUND: Reflecting evidence on Callous-Unemotional (CU) traits (e.g., lack of empathy and guilt, shallow affect), the DSM-5 added a categorical CU-based specifier for Conduct Disorder (CD), labeled 'with Limited Prosocial Emotions' (LPE). Theory and prior work suggest that CD youths with and without LPE will likely differ in neural processing of negative socioemotional content. This proposition, however, is mainly derived from studies employing related, yet distinct, operationalizations of CU traits (e.g., dimensional measure/median split/top quartile), thus precluding direct examination o
