Cortex; a journal devoted to the study of the nervous system and behavior2019eng
Human and non-human primate studies have examined neural responses to action and inhibition of action. However, it remains unclear whether the cerebral processes supporting these two distinct responses are differentially modulated by reward. In a sample of 35 healthy human adults, we examined brain activations to action and inhibition of action in a reward go/no-go task, with approximately ⅔ go and ⅓ no-go trials. Correct go and no-go trials were rewarded with $1 or ¢5 in reward sessions. Behaviorally, reward facilitated go and impeded no-go. A conjunction analysis showed shared activation to

Loss of behavioral control is a hallmark of addiction. Individual differences in basic cognitive processes such as response inhibition may be important for interrupting automatic behaviors associated with smoking and supporting prolonged abstinence. To examine how response inhibition and error monitoring processes differ as a function of smoking status, current smokers, former smokers and never smokers (N=126) completed a simple Go/No-Go task while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging. All groups performed similarly on the task and similarly engaged the inferior frontal gyrus and d

Activation of receptors for norepinephrine or serotonin in the central nervous system by i.v. injection of clonidine (10-50 micrograms/kg) or 5-hydroxytryptophan (20-40 mg/kg) inhibits phrenic neural discharges in anesthetized, artificially ventilated cats. Clonidine induces a rapid and complete inhibition of phrenic nerve activity which lasts for 1 to 3.2 hr. The inhibition is prevented by prior administration of phenoxybenzamine (10 mg/kg) or tolazoline (3 mg/kg). 5-Hydroxytryptophan, injected after inhibition of peripheral amino acid decarboxylase (carbidopa, 30-50 mg/kg), elicits a gradual

Although research on goal-directed, proactive inhibitory control (IC) and stimulus-driven, reactive IC is growing, no previous study has compared proactive IC in conditions of uncertainty with regard to upcoming inhibition to conditions of certain upcoming IC. Therefore, we investigated effects of certainty and uncertainty on behavior and blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal in proactive and reactive IC. In two studies, healthy adults performed saccadic go/no-go and prosaccade/antisaccade tasks. The certainty manipulation had a highly significant behavioral effect in both studies, with i

Proactive inhibition - the anticipation of having to stop a response - relies on objective information contained in cue-related contingencies in the environment, as well as on the subjective interpretation derived from these cues. To date, most studies of brain areas underlying proactive inhibition have exclusively considered the objective predictive value of environmental cues, by varying the probability of stop-signals. However, by only taking into account the effect of different cues on brain activation, the subjective component of how cues affect behavior is ignored. We used a modified sto

BACKGROUND: Problems inhibiting non-adaptive behaviors have been linked to an increased risk for substance use and other risk taking behaviors in adolescence. This study examines the hypothesis that abnormalities in neural activation during inhibition in early adolescence may predict subsequent substance involvement.
METHODS: Thirty eight adolescents from local area middle schools, ages 12-14, with very limited histories of substance use, underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) as they performed a go/no-go task of response inhibition and response selection. Adolescents and thei

The mechanism of the inhibition of proximal duodenal motor activity by carbachol-induced antral contractions or by field stimulation was studied in anesthetized dogs that had strain gauges sutured 5 and 10 cm from the pylorus on the antrum and duodenum. The duodenum was excited by vagal stimulation or distal duodenal field stimulation. Duodenal inhibition was studied 1) during a control period and after the pylorus was transected followed by administration of phentolamine, 2) during control and after phentolamine followed by pyloric transection, 3) during control and after prazosin followed by

BACKGROUND: Altered sensorimotor gating has been demonstrated by Prepulse Inhibition (PPI) tests in patients with psychosis. Recent advances in signal processing methods allow assessment of neural PPI through electroencephalogram (EEG) recording during acoustic startle response measures (classic muscular PPI). Simultaneous measurements of muscular (eye-blink) and neural gating phenomena during PPI test may help to better understand sensorial processing dysfunctions in psychosis. In this study, we aimed to assess simultaneously muscular and neural PPI in early bipolar disorder and schizophrenia

Methylphenidate (MPH) is a catecholamine transporter blocker, with dopamine agonistic effects in the basal ganglia. Response inhibition, error detection, and its mediating frontostriatal brain activation are improved by MPH in patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. However, little is known about the effects of MPH on response inhibition and error processing or its underlying brain function in healthy individuals. Therefore, this study employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and 2 response inhibition tasks in 52 healthy males. Subjects underwent fMRI during a go/n

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in motor inhibition may contribute to impulsivity and irritability in children with bipolar disorder. Studies of the neural circuitry engaged during failed motor inhibition in pediatric bipolar disorder may increase our understanding of the pathophysiology of the illness. The authors tested the hypothesis that children with bipolar disorder and comparison subjects would differ in ventral prefrontal cortex, striatal, and anterior cingulate activation during unsuccessful motor inhibition. They also compared activation in medicated versus unmedicated children with bipolar diso

Cyclophellitol, a cyclitol with an epoxide, is a novel microbial secondary metabolite that inhibits beta-glucosidase and beta-glucocerebrosidase. Daily administration of cyclophellitol induces a severe abnormality of the nervous system in mice while it has no toxicity in various cultured cells. It was shown to inhibit glucocerebrosidase in vivo significantly in mice and the content of glucocerebroside in liver, spleen, and brain was increased markedly. The enzyme activity was completely suppressed in brain, liver, spleen, kidney, and muscle. On the other hand hexosaminidase activity was not af

INTRODUCTION: Impaired inhibition of fear in the presence of safety cues and a deficiency in the extinction of fear cues are increasingly thought to be important biological markers of Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Other studies have suggested that there may be altered neural activation during behavioral inhibition tasks in subjects with PTSD. The current study aimed to see whether neural activation during inhibition was reduced in a highly traumatized civilian population, and whether atypical activation was associated with impaired fear inhibition.
METHODS: The participants were 41 tr

Inhibitory neuronal activity is a key regulator of brain function and is implicated in numerous developmental and psychiatric disorders. However, measuring inhibition in vivo remains a challenge. The Hurst exponent of the fMRI signal has been shown to correlate spatially with cellular measures of neural inhibition, but there have been few causal tests of the relationship between the Hurst exponent and neural inhibition. Here, we used alcohol, a drug with known impacts on inhibition, as a way to evaluate the validity of the Hurst exponent as a marker of neural inhibition across rats and humans.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an adult-onset motor neuron disease with a mean survival time of three years. The 97% of the cases have TDP-43 nuclear depletion and cytoplasmic aggregation in motor neurons. TDP-43 prevents non-conserved cryptic exon splicing in certain genes, maintaining transcript stability, including ATG4B, which is crucial for autophagosome maturation and Microtubule-associated proteins 1A/1B light chain 3B (LC3B) homeostasis. In ALS mice (G93A), Atg4b depletion worsens survival rates and autophagy function. For the first time, we observed an elevation of LC3ylation

Behavioral inhibition (BI), an early-life temperament characterized by vigilant responses to novelty, is a risk factor for anxiety disorders. In this study, we investigated whether differences in neonatal brain responses to infrequent auditory stimuli relate to children's BI at 1 year of age. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we collected blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) data from N = 45 full-term, sleeping neonates during an adapted auditory oddball paradigm and measured BI from n = 27 of these children 1 year later using an observational assessment. Whole-brain analyses

Tics in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS) resemble fragments of normal motor behaviour but appear in an intrusive, repetitive and context-inappropriate manner. Although tics can be voluntarily inhibited on demand, the neural correlates of this process remain unclear. 14 GTS adults without relevant comorbidities participated in this study. First, tic severity and voluntary tic inhibitory capacity were evaluated outside the scanner. Second, patients were examined with resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) in two states, free ticcing and voluntary tic inhibition. Local

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) is the normal suppression of the startle reflex when an intense stimulus is preceded by a weak non-startling prestimulus. PPI is widely used as a model for sensorimotor gating processes and has been shown to be impaired in various neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia. We have reproduced startle-like behavior and basic PPI modifications with a neural network. The network design was constrained by the attempt (1) to use as few connections as possible and (2) to relate neuroanatomical structures to the simulated network. Performance of the network was eval

Decision making (DM) requires coordination of elementary information processes subserved by a distributed network of brain areas. Computational models help to understand these processes, but most of the existing models focus on simulating only one of the many parallel operations. An existing spiking neural network (SNN) model attempts to simulate DM holistically, however it does not take advantage of the significant role of inhibition at the neural level as a possible mechanism underlying DM. To address this limitation, we propose to examine the impact of neural inhibition on decision strategy

Significance: Infrared (IR) inhibition can selectively block peripheral sensory nerve fibers, a potential treatment for autonomic-dysfunction-related diseases (e.g., neuropathic pain and interstitial cystitis). Lowering the IR inhibition threshold can increase its translational potentials. Aim: Infrared induces inhibition by enhancing potassium channel activation. We hypothesized that the IR dose threshold could be reduced by combining it with isotonic ion replacement. Approach: We tested the IR inhibition threshold on the pleural-abdominal connective of Aplysia californica. Using a customized
