Biophysical neural adaptation mechanisms enable artificial neural networks to capture dynamic retinal computation.

Adaptation is a universal aspect of neural systems that changes circuit computations to match prevailing inputs. These changes facilitate efficient encoding of sensory inputs while avoiding saturation. Conventional artificial neural networks (ANNs) have limited adaptive capabilities, hindering their ability to reliably predict neural output under dynamic input conditions. Can embedding neural adaptive mechanisms in ANNs improve their performance? To answer this question, we develop a new deep learning model of the retina that incorporates the biophysics of photoreceptor adaptation at the front

Computer-aided cholelithiasis diagnosis using explainable convolutional neural network.

Accurate and precise identification of cholelithiasis is essential for saving the lives of millions of people worldwide. Although several computer-aided cholelithiasis diagnosis approaches have been introduced in the literature, their use is limited because Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models are black box in nature. Therefore, a novel approach for cholelithiasis classification using custom CNN with post-hoc model explanation is proposed. This paper presents multiple contributions. First, a custom CNN architecture is proposed to classify and predict cholelithiasis from ultrasound image.

Protocol for dissecting cascade computational components in neural networks of a visual system.

Finding the complete functional circuits of neurons is a challenging problem in brain research. Here, we present a protocol, based on visual stimuli and spikes, for obtaining the complete circuit of recorded neurons using spike-triggered nonnegative matrix factorization. We describe steps for data preprocessing, inferring the spatial receptive field of the subunits, and analyzing the module matrix. This approach identifies computational components of the feedforward network of retinal ganglion cells and dissects the network structure based on natural image stimuli. For complete details on the

Portable brain-computer interface based on novel convolutional neural network.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a powerful, noninvasive tool that provides a high temporal resolution to directly reflect brain activities. Conventional electrodes require skin preparation and the use of conductive gels, while subjects must wear uncomfortable EEG hats. These procedures usually create a challenge for subjects. In the present study, we propose a portable EEG signal acquisition system. This study consists of two main parts: 1) A novel, portable dry-electrode and wireless brain-computer interface is designed. The EEG signal acquisition board is based on 24 bit, analog-to-digital c

Computer Aided Diagnosis of Melanoma Using Deep Neural Networks and Game Theory: Application on Dermoscopic Images of Skin Lesions.

Early detection of melanoma remains a daily challenge due to the increasing number of cases and the lack of dermatologists. Thus, AI-assisted diagnosis is considered as a possible solution for this issue. Despite the great advances brought by deep learning and especially convolutional neural networks (CNNs), computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems are still not used in clinical practice. This may be explained by the dermatologist's fear of being misled by a false negative and the assimilation of CNNs to a "black box", making their decision process difficult to understand by a non-expert. Decisi

Computer-assisted prediction of atherosclerotic intimal thickness based on weight of adrenal gland, interleukin-6 concentration, and neural networks.

OBJECTIVE: Atherosclerosis (AS) is the main pathological basis of ischemic cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, and the intimal thickness (IT) of large arteries is regarded as a powerful evaluation indicator for AS. We established an effective neural network model for automatic prediction of the IT and analyzed the high-risk warning indicators of IT. METHODS: The weight of the left adrenal (WLA) was evaluated. The serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentration was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The statistical methods included neural network modeling, a cubic spline interpolation algori

Diffractive Optical Neural Networks: Pathways Toward Intelligent and Scalable Photonic Computing.

Optical neural networks have witnessed remarkable progress in recent years, driven by the demand for parallel, high efficiency, and ultrafast information processing. Among various optical neural network architectures, diffractive optical neural networks (DONNs) have emerged as a particularly promising approach due to their scalability in the neuron number, ultrahigh throughput, and passive low-power operation. Although free-space implementations laid the foundation for DONNs, on-chip implementations were later developed to overcome integration challenges and to enhance compatibility with photo

Single-neuron network topology governs neural computation and learning in primate cortex.

Neural networks underlie complex brain information processing, yet the role of their single-neuron topology in governing computation and behavior remains unclear, particularly regarding how it shapes individual neuron function and activity evolution during learning. Using two-photon calcium imaging, we tracked functional connectivity in thousands of posterior parietal cortex neurons as monkeys learned sensorimotor associations across days. We identified small-world networks with densely connected hub neurons that dominated encoding key task variables, driving local dynamics and neural encoding

Time series computational prediction of vaccines for influenza A H3N2 with recurrent neural networks.

Influenza viruses are persistently threatening public health, causing annual epidemics and sporadic pandemics due to rapid viral evolution. Vaccines are used to prevent influenza infections but the composition of the influenza vaccines have to be updated regularly to ensure its efficacy. Computational tools and analyses have become increasingly important in guiding the process of vaccine selection. By constructing time-series training samples with splittings and embeddings, we develop a computational method for predicting suitable strains as the recommendation of the influenza vaccines using r

Hybrid physics-neural network computational spectrometer based on a random diffractive structure.

Miniaturized spectrometers often trade spectral resolution and bandwidth against footprint and reconstruction fidelity. We report a structure-algorithm co-designed computational spectrometer that combines a random micropinhole diffractive encoder with hybrid physics-neural reconstruction. The encoder generates wavelength-sensitive diffraction patterns with low inter-wavelength correlation. The reconstruction first obtains a nonnegativity-constrained, smoothness-regularized Tikhonov estimate and then fuses it with radial speckle features using a neural network. Experiments over the 500-700 nm b

Emphysema subtyping on thoracic computed tomography scans using deep neural networks.

Accurate identification of emphysema subtypes and severity is crucial for effective management of COPD and the study of disease heterogeneity. Manual analysis of emphysema subtypes and severity is laborious and subjective. To address this challenge, we present a deep learning-based approach for automating the Fleischner Society's visual score system for emphysema subtyping and severity analysis. We trained and evaluated our algorithm using 9650 subjects from the COPDGene study. Our algorithm achieved the predictive accuracy at 52%, outperforming a previously published method's accuracy of 45%.

Computer-aided diagnosis of endobronchial ultrasound images using convolutional neural network.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In the United States, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death. The survival rate could increase by early detection. In recent years, the endobronchial ultrasonography (EBUS) images have been utilized to differentiate between benign and malignant lesions and guide transbronchial needle aspiration because it is real-time, radiation-free and has better performance. However, the diagnosis depends on the subjective judgment from doctors. In some previous studies, which using the grayscale image textures of the EBUS images to classify the lung lesions but it belong

Predictive Behavior of a Computational Foot/Ankle Model through Artificial Neural Networks.

Computational models are useful tools to study the biomechanics of human joints. Their predictive performance is heavily dependent on bony anatomy and soft tissue properties. Imaging data provides anatomical requirements while approximate tissue properties are implemented from literature data, when available. We sought to improve the predictive capability of a computational foot/ankle model by optimizing its ligament stiffness inputs using feedforward and radial basis function neural networks. While the former demonstrated better performance than the latter per mean square error, both networks

Conjoint and extended neural networks for the computation of speech codes: the neural basis of selective impairment in reading words and pseudowords.

The computation of speech codes (i.e. phonology) is an important aspect of word reading. Understanding the neural systems and mech- anisms underlying phonological processes provides a foundation for the investigation of language in the brain. We used high-resolution three-dimensional positron emission tomography (PET) to investigate neural systems essential for phonological processes. The burden of neural activities on the computation of speech codes was maximized by three rhyming tasks (rhyming words, pseudowords and words printed in mixed letter cases). Brain activation patterns associated w

Automated segmentation of head CT scans for computer-assisted craniomaxillofacial surgery applying a hierarchical patch-based stack of convolutional neural networks.

PURPOSE: Computer-assisted techniques play an important role in craniomaxillofacial surgery. As segmentation of three-dimensional medical imaging represents a cornerstone for these procedures, the present study was aiming at investigating a deep learning approach for automated segmentation of head CT scans. METHODS: The deep learning approach of this study was based on the patchwork toolbox, using a multiscale stack of 3D convolutional neural networks. The images were split into nested patches using a fixed 3D matrix size with decreasing physical size in a pyramid format of four scale depths.

Neural transition system abstraction for neural network dynamical system models and its application to Computational Tree Logic verification.

This paper proposes an explainable abstraction-based verification method that prioritizes user interaction and enhances interpretability. By partitioning the system's state space using a data-driven process, we can abstract the dynamics into words consisting of state labels. When given a trained neural network model, a set-valued reachability analysis method is introduced to estimate the relationship between each subsystem. We construct the neural transition system abstraction with the neural network model and the relationships between partitions. Then, the abstracted model can be verified thr

Development of convolutional neural networks for classification and characterization of proximal humerus fractures on computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Agreement between surgeons on classification, characterization and choice of treatment for proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) is poor, leading to subjective surgical decision-making and poor intersurgeon reliability. Machine learning for classification and characterization of PHFs on radiographs performed insufficiently. More detailed three-dimensional configuration of PHFs on computed tomography (CT) scans may improve performance. This study aimed to 1) develop and internally validate a convolutional neural network on CT scans, 2) externally validate the model, and 3) compare chara

KidMesh: Computational Mesh Reconstruction for Pediatric Congenital Hydronephrosis Using Deep Neural Networks.

Pediatric congenital hydronephrosis (CH) is a common urinary tract disorder, primarily caused by obstruction at the renal pelvis-ureter junction. Magnetic resonance urography (MRU) can visualize hydronephrosis, including renal pelvis and calyces, by utilizing the natural contrast provided by water. Existing voxel-based segmentation approaches can extract CH regions from MRU, facilitating disease diagnosis and prognosis. However, these segmentation methods predominantly focus on morphological features, such as size, shape, and structure. To enable functional assessments, such as urodynamic simu
