OBJECTIVES: The external striated urethral sphincter (rhabdosphincter) is a tubular muscle sleeve that extends from the prostato-membranous urethra and perineal membrane to the bladder neck. The male rhabdosphincter neuroanatomy remains unclear, and a better understanding of its innervation may provide insight into potential modifications of radical pelvic surgery to improve urinary continence.
METHODS: Fresh cadaveric dissections of 12 male hemipelves were undertaken to investigate the neuroanatomy of the urinary rhabdosphincter.
RESULTS: Neuroanatomic courses of the nerve supply to the rha

The present article reviews the literature on the brain mechanisms underlying reading improvements following behavioral intervention for reading disability. This includes evidence of neuroplasticity concerning functional brain activation, brain structure, and brain connectivity related to reading intervention. Consequently, the functional neuroanatomy of reading intervention is compared to the existing literature on neurocognitive models and brain abnormalities associated with reading disability. A particular focus is on the left hemisphere reading network including left occipito-temporal, tem

Despite evidence for a difference in total brain volume between dyslexic and good readers, no previous neuroimaging study examined differences in allometric scaling (i.e. differences in the relationship between regional and total brain volumes) between dyslexic and good readers. The present study aims to fill this gap by testing differences in allometric scaling and regional brain volume differences in dyslexic and good readers. Object-based morphometry analysis was used to determine grey and white matter volumes of the four lobes, the cerebellum and limbic structures in 130 dyslexic and 106 g

The parietal association cortex comprises the superior and inferior parietal lobules, the precuneus and the cortices in the intraparietal, parietooccipital and lunate sulci. By processing somatic, visual, acoustic and vestibular sensory information, the parietal association cortex plays a pivotal role in spatial cognition and motor control of the eyes and the extremities. Sensory information from the primary and secondary somatosensory areas enters the superior parietal lobule and is transferred to the inferior parietal lobule. Visual information is processed through the dorsal visual pathway

Autobiographical memory refers to events and information about personal life and the self. Within autobiographical memory, many authors make a difference between episodic and semantic components. Study of retrograde amnesia gives information about memory consolidation. According to the "standard model" of consolidation, the medial temporal lobe plays a time-limited role in retrieval memory. Functional neuroanatomy studies of autobiographical memory are very few and many are recent. These studies concern which brain regions are involved in the autobiographical retrieval, episodic or semantic au

Anorexia nervosa is a complex eating disorder with genetic, metabolic, and psychosocial underpinnings. Using genome-wide methods, recent studies have associated many genes with the disorder. We characterized these genes by projecting them into reference transcriptomic atlases of the prenatal and adult human brain to determine where these genes are expressed in fine detail. We found that genes from an induced stem cell study of anorexia nervosa cases are expressed at higher levels in the lateral parabrachial nucleus. Although weaker, expression enrichment of the adult lateral parabrachial is al

Chronic abdominal pain accompanying intestinal inflammation emerges from the hyperresponsiveness of neuronal, immune and endocrine signaling pathways within the intestines, the peripheral and the central nervous system. In this article we review how the sensory nerve information from the healthy and the hypersensitive bowel is encoded and conveyed to the brain. The gut milieu is continuously monitored by intrinsic enteric afferents, and an extrinsic nervous network comprising vagal, pelvic and splanchnic afferents. The extrinsic afferents convey gut stimuli to second order neurons within the s

Our aims were to (1) examine possible neuroanatomical abnormalities associated with the Disruptive Behavior Disorders (DBDs) as a group and (2) assess neuroanatomical anomalies specific to each DBD (i.e., conduct disorder [CD] and oppositional defiant disorder). Cortical thickness analysis and voxel-based morphometry were analyzed in 47 8-year-old boys (22 DBDs with and without CD and/or ODD and 25 healthy controls) from Magnetic Resonance Imaging brain scans. DBD symptoms were assessed using the Dominic-R. In DBD subjects relative to controls, we found (1) a decreased overall mean cortical th

The etiology and pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome (TS) have not yet been clarified. Despite inconsistencies in the literature, some conclusions can be drawn on genetics, neuroanatomy and neurotransmitters. The inheritance of TS is unknown; the etiology seems to be polygenic. The basal ganglia are probably smaller in patients with TS. A dysfunction in the dopaminergic pathway causes tics. ADHD results from a decreased concentration of dopamine and an increased concentration of noradrenaline. OCD is caused by a dysfunction in serotonin and probably dopamine.

This chapter includes an extensive examination of the neuroanatomical and neurophysiological basis of dreaming and is primarily concerned with the phenomenology of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Relying on integrated findings from neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and neurochemical studies, the chapter describes that dreaming results from the interaction of brain regions such as the brainstem, thalamus, limbic system, and prefrontal cortex. The chapter underscores the central contribution of pontine cholinergic mechanisms to the generation of REM, combined with thalamocortical integration, to

The fourth ventricle is a small, fluid-filled cavity located within the brain that plays a vital role in the body's physiological functions. Therefore, the anatomical elements forming it bear significant clinical relevance. However, the exact relations between the elements that form its roof are still debated in the neuroanatomical literature; the inferior medullary velum, and the ventricle's median aperture in particular. In some atlases, the inferior medullary velum is placed in the midline, while in others, it is placed in the transverse plane. The median aperture is also displayed in diffe

Reduplicative paramnesia refers to the delusional belief that there are identical places in different locations. In this case-control study we investigated the clinical, phenomenological, neuropsychological and neuroanatomical data of eleven patients with reduplicative paramnesia and compared them against a control group of eleven patients with severe spatial disorientation without signs of reduplicative paramnesia. We show that most patients with reduplicative paramnesia report that a current place is reduplicated and/or relocated to an other familiar place. Patients with reduplicative paramn

Neuroanatomy and Pathophysiology of Pain Perception Abstract. Nociception, the possibility of our sensory nervous system to detect painful and therefore potentially harmful stimuli, is crucial for survival. In essence it serves as a "detect and protect" mechanism. For this reason, many features of this complex network, for example the nociceptors, are evolutionary highly preserved. To guarantee an adequate and fast response to prevent tissue damage, the information has to be processed in a fast and stable manner. To this account, the network is designed to be able to potentiate the information

Our understanding of the mechanisms of loss and recovery of consciousness, following severe brain injury or during anesthesia, is changing rapidly. Recent neuroimaging studies have shown that patients with chronic disorders of consciousness and subjects undergoing general anesthesia present a complex dysfunctionality in the architecture of brain connectivity. At present, the global hallmark of impaired consciousness appears to be a multifaceted dysfunctional connectivity pattern with both within-network loss of connectivity in a widespread frontoparietal network and between-network hyperconnec

OBJECTIVE: Positron Emission Tomography (PET) studies of cerebral glucose metabolism have demonstrated sensitivity in evaluating the functional neuroanatomy of treatment response variability in depression, as well as in the early detection of functional changes associated with incipient cognitive decline. The evaluation of cerebral glucose metabolism in late life depression may have implications for understanding treatment response variability, as well as evaluating the neurobiological basis of depression in late life as a risk factor for dementia.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with geriatric dep

Fatigue is the most commonly reported, most debilitating, and most poorly understood Post-Polio Sequelae (PPS). Postmortem studies of 50 years ago documented frequent and severe poliovirus-induced lesions within the Reticular Activating System (RAS). Recently, neuropsychological testing has documented marked attention deficits in polio survivors reporting severe fatigue. However, neither of these findings has yet been related to the pathophysiology of post-polio fatigue. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain was performed in 22 polio survivors carefully screened to eliminate the effect of co

BACKGROUND: Although subjective sensory hypersensitivity is prevalent after stroke, it is rarely recognized by health care providers, and its neural mechanisms are largely unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the neuroanatomy of poststroke subjective sensory hypersensitivity as well as the sensory modalities in which subjective sensory hypersensitivity can occur by conducting both a systematic literature review and a multiple case study of patients with subjective sensory hypersensitivity.
METHOD: For the systematic review, we searched three databases (Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus) for e

While cognitive dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) is increasingly recognized as a progressive symptom of the underlying neurodegenerative disease, our understanding of the functional and structural anatomic changes underlying these cognitive changes remains incomplete. Like the motor system, research point to a complex interplay between multiple parallel yet interconnected networks or circuits that are affected in PD and give rise to cognitive symptomatology. These circuits are most often studied in the context of disorders of executive function, and tightly linke to frontal lobe dysfunc
