Intraventricular neurocytoma is a rare, usually benign tumour of neuronal differentiation, recently recognized as a clinico-pathological entity in comparison to the other intraventricular tumours. It is generally found in the lateral or third ventricles in close relationship with the septum pellucidum, and commonly affects young adults. The authors present a case of an intraventricular neurocytoma in a 25-year-old male and discuss the importance of diagnostic criteria, pathological findings and management of these tumours.

The authors report a case of intraventricular tumor. The tumor was initially misdiagnosed as an oligodendroglioma but later proved to be a central neurocytoma. The imaging and histopathological features are reviewed. The immunopositivity allows a diagnosis of neurocytoma. Prognosis is favorable following total surgical resection, with low recurrence rate.

Central neurocytomas (CN) are rare, usually benign cerebral intraventricular neuroepithelial tumors, which occur in adult patients. Retrospective evaluation of the CT- and MRI-findings in eight cases as well as review of the cases reported in the literature showed that CN usually presents as a primarily slightly hyperdense and/or hyperintense mass within the body of the lateral ventricle with moderate contrast enhancement. The majority of tumors contain both multiple small cysts and calcifications and exhibit a characteristic broad based attachment to the superolateral ventricular wall. We con

A 29-year-old male was admitted with chronic headache on February 26, 1987, when there were no neurological deficits or physical abnormalities. Computed tomographic (CT) scans showed a mixed-density mass with no evidence of calcification in the left lateral ventricle, which was irregularly enhanced by contrast medium. Under a diagnosis of an intraventricular glial tumor, surgery was performed via a left transcortical-transventricular approach on March 31. The highly vascular, nodular tumor, originated from the lateral wall of the left lateral ventricle near the foramen of Monro, was successful

A 24-year-old female was hospitalized for progressive headache and nausea. Computed tomography showed a mass lesion in the left lateral ventricle near the foramen of Monro. On light microscopy, this tumor morphologically resembled an oligodendroglioma. However, ultrastructural examination disclosed synapses and neuronal differentiation. Review of the literature revealed 21 cases of intraventricular neuronal tumors in adults that were diagnosed as central neurocytoma or differentiated neuroblastoma. Fourteen of the 21 patients were males and seven were females. Their ages ranged from 16 to 52 y

Central neurocytoma (CN) is an important consideration in the differential diagnosis of any intraventricular lesion. Initial evaluation should include noncontrast CT, MRI with and without gadolinium contrast, and magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy, if available. CN classically appear as a partially calcified mass on CT, arising from the septum pellucidum or foramen of Monro, with a soap-bubble multicystic appearance on MR T2-imaging and heterogeneous enhancement on MR T1 postcontrast imaging. MR perfusion/permeability and dynamic contrast imaging are experimental and promising tools in the d

BACKGROUND: Since the first description of Central neurocytomas (CNs) as a benign tumor entity in 1982, there has been great enthusiasm regarding the benign course and the curative surgical approach to this disease. The current study was performed to investigate the frequency of disease recurrence during long-term follow-up.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the medical files with emphasis on clinicoradiologic findings and histologic and immunohistochemical features was performed.
RESULTS: Between 1985-2003. surgical resection was performed in 14 patients with CNs ages 16-43 years (7 were

Central neurocytomas are uncommon tumors of the CNS, representing approximately 0.1-0.5% of all primary CNS tumors. Patients most often present with symptoms of increased intracranial pressure (headache, nausea/vomiting, diplopia) due to obstructive hydrocephalus. Rarely, central neurocytomas may present with a hemorrhage. Central neurocytomas are intraventricular tumors with a predilection for arising in either the lateral or third ventricles. CT or MR cranial imaging demonstrates a circumscribed mass in the ventricles, frequent calcification and moderate contrast enhancement. Surgery provide

BACKGROUND: Central neurocytoma (CN) represents a rare, relatively recently described primary central nervous system tumor. It ranks among intraventricular tumors due to its predominant location within the lateral brain ventricles. CN occurs mostly in young adults around the 3rd decade of life; almost a fifth of the cases are children under 18 years of age.
OBJECTIVES: The authors present three cases of patients with histopathologically confirmed CN, emphasizing diagnostic imaging issues. A review of the literature concerning differential diagnosis and clinical and therapeutic aspects is also

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Neurocytomas are typically located within the supratentorial ventricular system. Extraventricular neurocytomas are very rare, and this is only the second reported case of a pontine neurocytoma. We discuss the clinical presentation, histology, and treatment of these rare tumors.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old man presented with a 4-month history of headache and unilateral facial and distal extremity paresthesia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans demonstrated a 2.6 x 2.2-cm ring-enhancing cystic mass in the right pons.
INTERVENTION: MRI-guided stereotactic

Central neurocytoma was first described by Hassoun et al. in 1982. The tumor is a rare benign tumor of the central nervous system, usually located in the lateral ventricles. Most reported cases are histologically and clinically benign. Several cases with recurrence have been described. Including the case presented here, only seven cases with craniospinal dissemination have been reported. None of the previous cases with dissemination had histological atypia but most did have a high MIB-1 labeling index (MIB-1 LI). Our patient had a high MIB-1 LI (4.6%) and dissemination was found to have advanc

We presented the clinicopathological features of 8 cases of intraventricular neurocytoma, which was a rare, benign tumor of neuronal origin and affected young patients. In each case the intraventricular tumor existed near the foramen of Monro and/or body of the lateral ventricle, and was associated with ventricular dilatation. A CT scan demonstrated a well-circumscribed iso- or hyperdense mass with some calcification, intratumoral cysts of various sizes and a heterogeneous enhancement. MRI, which was performed in 4 cases, confirmed a mass of isointense or slightly hyperintense on T 1-weighted

In 1976 a patient underwent partial resection of an intraventricular tumor that showed central neurocytoma. No other tumor pattern was observed. In 1994 this patient underwent a second operation for removal of the tumor, at which time foci of tumor were diagnosed as central neurocytoma and ganglioglioma. This is the first reported case of differentiation of central neurocytoma into ganglioglioma, a sequence of events termed differentiating central neurocytoma.

A case of central neurocytoma is reported, presenting as a tumor of the occipital lobe, closely related to the ependyma of the occipital horn of the lateral ventricle but not actually invading it. This is a distinctly uncommon location, and only four tumors have been reported so far in a lobar position, without an intraventricular component. The case broadens our knowledge of this recently described tumor and gives an opportunity for discussion of the role of radiotherapy in its management, which currently remains controversial.

Three cases of periventricular neurocytomas are presented. All patients had a large but well-circumscribed, hyperdense tumor with insignificant contrast enhancement in the lateral and third ventricle, causing hydrocephalus. Calcification was present in one patient. Angiography revealed a blush tumor enhancement in two cases. Surgical removal was complete in two patients and incomplete in one. Light microscopy showed a cell pattern that resembled either ependymoma or oligodendroglioma. However, in all cases the tumor was confirmed to be a neurocytoma by immunocytochemical analysis that showed r

We report a case of central neurocytoma that manifested tumor recurrence with craniospinal dissemination. Imaging studies before surgery showed a markedly enhanced tumor with small cysts and calcification, which invaded the adjacent brain parenchyma, located in the posterior horn of the right lateral ventricle. Proton MR spectroscopy showed markedly elevated choline and lactate peaks with a strongly diminished N-acetylaspartate peak. Two years after neurosurgical intervention, the tumor showed multiple craniospinal dissemination in the middle cranial fossa and the intradural extramedullary spa

Central neurocytoma (CN) is a rare intraventricular brain tumor that affects young adults. Just over 100 cases of CN have been reported since it was first described in 1982. It accounts for less than 1% of all central nervous system neoplasms. It is characterized by cystic spaces and intratumoral calcification. The tumor is generally hypervascular. Patients generally present with signs and symptoms of noncommunicating hydrocephalus such as headache, visual disturbances such as blurry vision and visual field deficit, and nausea or vomiting or both. Gross total surgical resection is the treatmen
