OBJECTIVE: To discuss the presentation and management of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) of the hard palate.
METHOD: Case presentation and literature review.
CASE: A 6-month-old girl presented with a slow growing, non-tender anterior oral hard palate mass. Radiologic imaging revealed a well-circumscribed cystic lesion containing teeth. After excision, histopathologic and electron microscopic evaluation revealed MNTI. No recurrence was seen at 12-month follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS: This case and a review of the literature reveal MNTI to be a rare, benign hard palate tumor, which

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, benign tumor that usually involves the upper or lower jaw, but it may also arise in other sites. We describe a case of MNTI located in the left epididymis of a 6-month-old boy. Left orchiectomy was performed. Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies revealed two types of cells: small, poorly differentiated cells that were positive for neuron-specific enolase protein and vimentin, and larger epithelial cells that were positive for melanoma antigen (HMB45) and frequently contained large and elongated melanosomes, similar to thos

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare neural crest-derived neoplasm typically arising in the craniofacial region. Extracranial involvement, particularly in long bones, is exceedingly uncommon and may pose a diagnostic challenge. We report a 4.5-month-old male infant presenting with a rapidly enlarging forearm mass involving the radius with soft tissue extension. The initial biopsy suggested a malignant round cell tumor of neuroectodermal differentiation. A diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma was considered, based on clinicoradiological impression. The tumor showed poor response to

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy is a rare condition that typically presents within the first 6 months of life. It rarely metastasizes but is locally aggressive. Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy has been reported under several other names including retinal anlage tumor and melanotic progonoma. Most commonly, melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy originates in the maxilla. Tumors in previously reported orbital cases have arisen from adjacent structures or from orbital bone. Recommended treatment of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy has consisted of complete exc

CASE: A 4-month-old boy presented with a nontender swelling of the right proximal forearm of 2 months' duration. Radiological evaluation showed lytic lesion surrounded by sclerotic bone in the ulna with soft-tissue extension. Histopathological examination showed tumor of round and epithelioid cells containing melanin, interpreted as melanotic neuroectodermal tumor. The patient underwent a wide excision of the shaft of the ulna with creation of radioulnar synostosis. There is no recurrence 6 years after surgery.
CONCLUSION: Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor is rare in the appendicular skeleton a

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, benign neoplasm of neural crest origin more commonly seen in the craniofacial region. We report a case of MNTI of the epididymis in a 6-month-old male child with emphasis on the sonographic appearance which has not been previously described. In this case, the mass was inseparable from the testicle and therefore the differential diagnosis considered both extratesticular and intratesticular masses. MNTI should be added to the differential diagnosis of scrotal masses, particularly if they present in a child younger than 12 months of age

A case of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) in a 6-months-old white female child is presented. The tumor was located in the left half of the superior maxillary bone and affected the maxillary sinus, inducing large facial asymmetry. The histologic aspects of the tumor were typical for the entity: two cell populations, one pigmented melanocyte-like cell, the other small neuroblastic-like cell. After adjuvant chemotherapeutic treatment with a strong reduction of the tumor, the melanocyte-like cell predominated, allowing a better result of the surgery and probably a better prognosi

A 21-year-old female presented with a known left orbital mass. The mass was incidentally identified 5 years previously after a motor vehicle accident. After initial discovery, the lesion had been followed with surveillance imaging and remained radiographically stable, during which her only symptom was headache. Recent worsening periorbital pain, headache, and progressive visual decline prompted referral. At presentation, best corrected visual acuity was 20/40 in the left eye with 1+ relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD). Updated imaging revealed a left intraconal orbital mass compressing t

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare, benign neoplasm with a predilection for children that predominantly involves the craniofacial region. Here we report 2 cases of MNTI involving epididymis, placing emphasis on the sonographic features. Both appeared to be hypoechoic, regular shaped masses with abundant blood supplies. The unique sonographic features and age of predilection make it possible to diagnose MNTI within the scrotum by ultrasonography.

We describe a rare case of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor (MNT) of the brain recurring 12 years after complete remission. An 11-year-old girl initially presented with exotropia and bilateral papilledema. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed an intracranial extraaxial large tumor at the midfrontal region. T(1)-weighted MR imaging showed the tumor to be well delineated with homogeneous enhancement by gadolinium. The tumor was subtotally removed, and the histological diagnosis was MNT. The residual tumor became enlarged, so gamma knife radiosurgery was performed 5 months after initial surger

A rare case of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy involving the right occipital bone in an 11-month-old infant is described. The bone tumor and its dural extension were surgically removed. Three-dimensional reconstruction of the tumor and brain from neuroimaging data added worthwhile information for preoperative planning. Microscopic examination revealed melanotic and neuroblastic tissue in a fibrillary matrix involving the expanded bone and superficial dura. A focal osteoblastic cranial mass in an infant should alert the clinician to consider this tumor.

To the best of our knowledge, thus far there are no reported cases of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) with multiple complications. In this case report, we describe the clinical phenotype of MNTI in a 9-month-old female infant associated with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), a congenital heart defect, and congenital hypothyroidism (CH). Our study showed that the growth of MNTI was delayed by a lower dosage of levothyroxine (L-T4) that was prescribed to treat CH because of the presence of TOF, a severe congenital heart disease. However, the standardized dosage of L-T4 improved thyroi

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy is a rare benign tumor of neural crest origin. The tumor generally presents in the jawbones; however, it occasionally occurs in extracranial sites. Although 95% of these tumors present within the first year of life and 15% in extracranial locations, we report an unusual case of a 15-month-old male with melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy of the epididymis. The patient underwent orchiectomy without adjuvant chemotherapy or radiation. Twenty months later, there was no sign of recurrence. In addition, we discuss the role of chemotherapy and radiat

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare congenital neoplasm that originates from the neural crest cells, which give rise to the melanocytes of the skin and leptomeninges. We report a case of MNTI with neurocutaneous melanosis of a 28-month-old girl. She was born with hydrocephalus and several large congenital giant nevi. There were no findings except for hydrocephalus, after a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt operation performed when she was 6 months old. She was operated on for a growing inguinal mass at 8 months. The specimen from the inguinal sac was positive for HMB45, v

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare distinctive neoplasm of infants with rapid expansile growth and a high rate of recurrence. Most commonly, the lesion affects the maxilla followed by the skull and orbit. One such case was diagnosed in a 5-month-old boy who presented with rapidly enlarged swelling over the back of the skull. Surgical excision was done. Typical histological features and immunohistochemical studies confirmed the diagnosis.

Testicular melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is extremely rare, with 2 cases reported in the literature. Its rarity and rapid and infiltrative growth pattern pose a diagnostic challenge. A previously healthy 3-month-old male, presented with a history of worsening left hemiscrotal swelling for 1 week. An outside ultrasound was suggestive of testicular torsion. Left orchiectomy demonstrated a mass occupying almost entire testicle with a variegated cut surface, with areas of pigmentation, necrosis, and hemorrhage. Histological examination confirmed MNTI of the testis and epididymi

BACKGROUND: The cytologic features of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) have been described in rare cases only, and these reports have been based solely on direct smears obtained from aspirated tumor material or from touch preparations of resected tumors.
CASE: We report, to our knowledge, the first documented case of an epididymal MNTI diagnosed from aspirated hydrocele fluid processed using the ThinPrep system (Cytyc Corp., Boxborough, Massachusetts, U.S.A.).
CONCLUSION: Based on a 15 year retrospective review of scrotal fluids submitted for cytologic evaluation to our labo

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy (MNTI) is a rare entity primarily affecting the craniofacial bones during the first year of life, with only 5 reported cases involving peripheral long bones. We herein present a case of MNTI in the tibia of an infant, with a somewhat atypical presentation, and a noteworthy clinical course characterized by progressive spontaneous resolution without therapy, thus sparing the child the trauma of amputation. There is no evidence of active residual or recurrent disease with 13-year follow-up. To the best of our knowledge, essentially all reported cases of

PURPOSE: Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy (MNTI) is a rare, locally aggressive tumor with distinct pathological features and treatment paradigms commonly occurring in the head and neck region. Microscopically, it consists of a biphasic population of small neuroblast-like cells and larger melanin-containing epithelioid cells. The main purpose of this study is to characterize clinicopathological and immunohistochemical features of MNTI at a single institution and discuss challenges in the differential diagnosis.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of MNTI cases diagnosed at
