Ewing's Sarcoma/Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumors in Bronchus.

Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (ES/pPNET), a member of the Ewing sarcoma family of tumors, is a malignant soft tissue tumor with small undifferentiated neuroectodermal cells. Primary trachea-bronchial ES/pPNET is very rare. The most common pulmonary ES is due to a metastasis. We describe a case of ES/pPNET which originated in the left basal trunk bronchus. The patient was a 30-year-old male, presenting with irritable cough and fever for 10 days. A tumor of 60 mm in diameter was found in the left basal trunk bronchus, extending to the left lower lobe. No distant metas

Telomere maintenance in childhood primitive neuroectodermal brain tumors.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs), including medulloblastoma (PNET/MB) and supratentorial PNET (sPNET), are the most common malignant brain tumors of childhood. The stabilization of telomere lengths by telomerase activation is an important step in carcinogenesis and cell immortalization. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the major polyphenol in green tea, is a telomerase inhibitor with antiproliferative and anticarcinogenic effects against different types of cancer. In this study, we used real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction to measure the mRNA expression of the huma

Surveillance imaging in children with primitive neuroectodermal tumors.

Controversy surrounds the benefits of routine surveillance magnetic resonance or computed tomographic imaging for monitoring children after resection of primitive neuroectodermal tumors. A recent study suggested that serial imaging studies detect only a small minority of tumor recurrences in patients with symptoms. The authors concluded that even in patients with recurrence documented by imaging, no patient with a recurrence survived long (average, 5 mo) and that surveillance scanning is of little clinical value in children with primitive neuroectodermal tumors. We reviewed our experience with

[Pathology and clinical aspects of peripheral neuroectodermal tumors].

A 36-year-old man developed progressive pain in the left thorax radiating to the shoulder, associated with weight loss as well as axillary and supraclavicular lymph-node swellings, and a left Horner's syndrome. The radiological diagnosis was Pancoast tumour. Computed tomography of the thorax revealed that the tumour had almost completely infiltrated the left lung and hilus. Sonography demonstrated metastases in the liver and retroperitoneum. Histological examination of an excised axillary lymph-node metastasis showed an undifferentiated small-cell tumour. Immunohistochemical tests revealed exp

Molecular markers of primitive neuroectodermal tumors and other pediatric central nervous system tumors. Monoclonal antibodies to neuronal and glial antigens distinguish subsets of primitive neuroectodermal tumors.

Seventy-one tumors of the central nervous system in children were studied immunohistologically. Thirty-seven were classified histologically as PNETs, of which 35 were located in the cerebellum (medulloblastomas), one in the cerebrum, and one in the spinal cord. The 34 non-PNETs included five ependymomas, seven gangliogliomas, 15 astrocytomas, and seven tumors of other histology. We used monoclonal antibodies specific for neurofilament (NF) triplet proteins, for microtubule associated protein 2 and tau protein and for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and myelin basic protein. In addition,

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the penile urethra.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET)/Ewing's sarcoma tumors are a group of highly malignant tumors composed of small, round cells showing neuroectodermal differentiation that commonly affects soft tissue and bone. PNET involving the genitourinary system is rare and PNET of the penile urethra is rarer still. It exhibits a highly aggressive biological behavior with poor prognosis. We report a case of a 27-year-old male presenting with penile swelling and difficulty in passing urine. Examination revealed a firm penile urethral mass. Pathological and immunohistochemical results of the specimen o

Suprasellar Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor in an Adult.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) of the central nervous system (CNS) are a heterogeneous group of embryonal malignancies that are composed of undifferentiated or poorly differentiated neuroepithelial cells. Supratentorial PNET is the second most common CNS embryonal malignancy in children, but it is rare in adults. We report the case of a 31-year-old woman with bilateral vision loss and a bitemporal hemianopia. Neuroimaging revealed a suprasellar mass, and pathology was consistent with PNET. After surgical debulking of the tumor followed by radiation therapy and chemotherapy, the patien

[A CASE OF PRIMITIVE NEUROECTODERMAL TUMOR OF THE TESTIS].

A 44-year-old man discovered a swollen right testis more than 4 years earlier. He was brought to our hospital because of abdominal pain and vomiting. Enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed a swollen right testis, lung nodules, and swollen retroperitoneal and mediastinal lymph nodes. The swollen lymph nodes compressed the duodenum, causing ileus. HCG, HCG-β, and AFP levels were normal, but the LDH level was high (2,933 IU/L). A diagnosis of testicular cancer with lung and lymph node metastases was made, and a right orchidectomy was performed. However, the pathological diagnosis was unclear, a

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the pelvis.

UNLABELLED: The primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) belongs to a group of highly malignant tumors and is composed of small round cells of a neuroectodermal origin. Categorized in the same tumor family as Ewing sarcoma, the PNET is most likely to occur in bones and soft tissues. However, a small number of PNET cases arising in the pelvis have been reported as well. WE PRESENT THREE CASES OF PELVIC PNET: two cases in the ovary and one case in the broad ligament. The PNET often exhibits aggressive clinical behavior with worse outcomes than other small round cell tumors. The significant progno

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the thymus.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (pPNET) are an extremely rare disease entity of malignant tumors belonging to the Ewing sarcoma family that usually occur in children and adolescents with a predilection for the truncal and axial soft tissue. Thoracopulmonary manifestation in children mostly involves the chest wall as a large tumorous mass or the posterior mediastinum. In adults these tumors are even more infrequent. We report about a 46-year-old woman with a pPNET of the thymus which infiltrated the pericardium. According to the English literature this is the first reported case bot

[The leptomeningeal form of primary neuroectodermal tumor].

Brain neoplasms as primary leptomeningeal forms are rare, particularly if the case in point is primary neuroectodermal tumors (PNET). In the literature, there are only few reports on this topic. The authors describe one of such rare cases. A 21-years-old man was admitted to a hospital for complaints about headache. Brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed internal hydrocephalus and slightly uniform meningeal thickening without the signs of space-occupying lesions. Ten months after ventriculoperitoneostomy, the patient suddenly developed tetraparesis and respirato

Primitive supratentorial neuroectodermal tumor in an adult.

We report the case of a 32-year-old female with a diagnosis of supratentorial tumour. Total removal of the tumour was achieved in a two-stage procedure. Histopathology revealed a primitive neuroectodermal tumour (PNET), an unusual and highly malignant, mainly infratentorial tumour of childhood that is uncommonly described in the supratentorial compartment of adults. We review the literature and describe the existing knowledge of these tumours.

[Primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the kidney in children].

OBJECTIVES: To characterize primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the kidney as a differential diagnosis for Wilms tumor, and to emphasize the severity of the disease. METHODS: We report the case of a patient with a diagnosis of primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the kidney who underwent nephrectomy and complete tumor resection combined with chemotherapy. RESULTS: Initially, the response of the patient to treatment was favorable, with a few events associated with agranulocytosis resulting from the chemotherapy. Ten months after of the end of treatment, the tumor recurred in the paraspinal cervica

[A case of primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the kidney].

A primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is a solid tumor originating from the neural crest. This tumor is known to occur in the central nervous system and soft tissue, but recently determined to also invade the kidney. Although primary renal PNET is very rare, we encountered a case of primary renal PNET with multiple lung metastasis. This case was a 35-year-old man with a chief complaint of macroscopic hematuria, which he noticed in January 1996. He was hospitalized because of right renal tumor detected with ultrasonography. On CT scan, a low-density solid tumor with a maximum diameter of 8 c

[Orbital melanotic neuroectodermal tumor in an infant].

A 3-month-old infant patient presented with a 1-week history of a quickly progressive mass in the left eye. A hard, irregularly shaped tumor was found in the superolateral orbit. B-scan showed an uneven hypoecho and an undefined lesion. On the orbital CT, a soft tissue mass was located around the left zygomatic tubercle, involving part of the bone and lacrimal gland. The left orbital mass was removed under general anesthesia after admission. The histological and immunohistochemical examination revealed it was a melanotic neuroectodermal tumor. The infant patient was followed up for 6 months af

Scrotal Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor.

The peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) is a rare malignant tumor originating from neuroectoderm that usually occurs in children or adolescent and is frequently located in the extremities, chest cavity, pelvic cavity and chest wall. We present a rare case of an 84-year-old man with a history of pPNET in the scrotal sac, to our knowledge not previously published in the literature. The presence of a large irreducible mass in the inguinal sac forced to exclude a tumor. Ultrasound and MRI are very useful modalities to assess the location of the mass, its dependency from any organ an
