Radiologic findings of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor arising in the retroperitoneum.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to present the radiological findings of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors that arise in the retroperitoneum. CONCLUSION: Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) arising in the retroperitoneum tend to be large and aggressive. Although the imaging appearance of peripheral PNETs is nonspecific, these tumors should be considered in the differential diagnosis when one encounters a large retroperitoneal mass with aggressive features.

Isolated cardiac peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor isolated in the heart, presenting as a primary cardiac tumor is considered as extremely rare. METHODS: We present a 53-year-old Chinese female with a cardiac tumor which was discovered by CT. RESULTS: A hypo-intense tumorous mass was shown extending from the left ventricle by Cardiac CT, and fused FDG positron emission tomography demonstrated no other abnormal FDG active lesions in the body. We performed a total resection surgery of the tumor subsequently and the patient recovered well and discharged from hospital 6 d after surgery. CON

FDG PET/CT in peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the retroperitoneum.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) is a very aggressive neoplasm that predominantly affects children and adolescents with a poor prognosis. A 35-year-old woman presented with right upper abdominal pain for 2 weeks. Abdominal enhanced CT showed a large cystic-solid tumor in the left retroperitoneum, with progressive enhanced papillary projections of the wall. FDG PET/CT showed strong FDG uptake of the cystic wall with SUVmax of 17.2. The patient underwent completed resection of the tumor. pPNET was confirmed by pathology. The high FDG uptake of the tumor may be related to its hi

Primary Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the vulva.

We report a case of Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/pPNET) arising in the vulva in a 17-year-old adolescent girl. Primary extraskeletal ES/pPNET is uncommon and only rarely affects the female genital tract. Characteristic histologic features of ES/pPNET were present in this case including a monomorphic population of small round blue cells with cytoplasmic glycogen confirmed by periodic acid-Schiff and were immunohistochemically positive for CD99 in a membranous and Fli-1 in a nuclear pattern. The presence of an EWS/Fli-1 fusion transcript was demonstrated by revers

[Recurrence of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the orbit with systemic metastases].

CASE REPORT: A six-year-old boy presented with proptosis of the right eye. Imaging studies detected a mass in the medial wall of the right orbit. This mass was biopsied revealing a histopathologic diagnosis of primitive neuroectodermal tumor, so chemotherapy treatment was given. After seven years in remission he presented with a recurrence of the orbital tumor and was found to also have systemic metastases. Treatment with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and orbital exenteration was unsuccessful. DISCUSSION: The orbital occurrence of these tumors is extremely rare. Differentiation from other small

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the orbit in Graves' ophthalmopathy - A rare presentation.

Graves' ophthalmopathy is the most common cause of both unilateral and bilateral proptoses in adults. Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) is a small round cell malignant lesion of neuroectodermal origin which very rarely affects the orbit. In this case report, we have discussed about a young woman with existing Graves' ophthalmopathy who presented with worsening proptosis; computed tomography imaging revealed an irregular mass lesion in the right orbit without bone erosion. Biopsy and immunohistochemistry of the mass lesion revealed features of primitive neuroectodermal tumor (P

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the parotid gland in a child: A case report.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is a term used to describe a group of highly malignant neoplasms of soft-tissue origin, with varying degrees of divergent differentiation. The occurrence of peripheral PNET in the head and neck region has been reported infrequently in the medical literature. This disease generally occurs in adolescents and young adults, and rarely occurs in children <3 years old. The current study presents an extremely rare case of pPNET of the parotid gland in a 2-year-old male, which had been previously misdiagnosed and treated as a mumps. The lesion showed the characte

Intracranial peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor manifesting as abducens nerve palsy.

INTRODUCTION: Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) occurring as an extra-axial lesion within the intracranial space and extending to the subarachnoid space is extremely rare. CASE REPORT: An 18-month-old girl presented with an intracranial peripheral PNET manifesting as abducens nerve palsy. Magnetic resonance imaging on admission revealed a lesion affecting the trigeminal and abducens nerves. The tumor was partially removed via the subtemporal approach. Histological examination showed a high-grade, undifferentiated neoplasm of small cell type with positive immunostaining for MIC

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the vulva: report of a case with imprint cytology.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the vulva is an extremely rare disease, and, to our knowledge, only two cases have been previously reported. CASE: A 45-year-old woman presented with a mass in the right labium major. Three years after removal of the tumor, she noticed a new lesion in the same place and underwent a partial vulvectomy. The imprint cytology of the recurrent tumor showed a monomorphic appearance, composed of small round cells with scant cytoplasm against a hemorrhagic background. These tumor cells were loosely connective, but rosettelike structures

Peripheral-type primitive neuroectodermal tumor arising in the tentorium. Case report.

The authors report the case of a peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) arising in the tentorium in a 5-year-old boy who presented with frequent vomiting and mild palsy of the left abducent nerve. Following complete surgical excision of the tumor via a transpetrosal approach, the patient has thus far been disease free for 7 years. The tumor tissue was composed of small cells with uniform round nuclei and minimal identifiable cytoplasm. Homer-Wright rosettes were frequently observed. Immunohistochemical studies demonstrated a positive reaction to HBA-71, which recognizes the cell sur

Ewing Sarcoma/Peripheral Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor in the Adrenal Gland of a Child.

Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) typically occurs in long or flat bones, soft tissues, or less often, solid organs. Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor arising from the adrenal gland is extremely rare, especially in children, and only limited cases are reported previously. Herein, we review a case of a 22-month-old girl who presented to our department with abdominal pain, bulging of the left flank, and a nonfunctioning adrenal lesion which was found to be an adrenal ES/PNET. The patient was successfully treated with surgery and adjuvant ch

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor in a two-year-old paint horse.

A 2-year-old gelding presented with a history of lethargy and anorexia. Physical examination revealed pleural and abdominal fluid, as well as several masses in the scrotum. The horse became acutely dyspneic despite 7 days of supportive care. Because of the poor prognosis, the owners elected euthanasia. Gross necropsy findings included multiple masses in the scrotum and inguinal canals and along the dorsal peritoneal cavity. The neoplasm infiltrated the kidneys, liver, spleen, mesenteric lymph nodes, mesentery, and abdominal surface of the diaphragm. Histologically, the neoplasm is composed of

A rare case of a peripheral Ewing sarcoma primitive neuroectodermal tumor of pelvic origin.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) represent malignant neuroectodermal tumors composed of small round cells. They can be differentiated between originating from the peripheral nervous system or the central nervous system. Peripheral PNET (pPNET) can be further subclassified as one of the Ewing family tumors (EFT). Although rare, EFT can originate in the female genital tract and pelvic region. Here, we present a case of a middle-aged female with PNET masses in her uterus, abdomen, and hepatic lobes. We discuss the diagnostic modalities, including immunohistochemistry, histopathology, and i
