Inter-Postsynaptic Functional Links for Associative Memory: Feasibility in a Realistic Neuropil Model.

To quantify neuronal input degeneracy and test computationally whether nanoscale (≤30 nm) spine appositions are structurally eligible sites for inter-postsynaptic functional links (IPLs) underlying associative learning, assuming plausible pathway convergence onto abutted spine pairs. Empirical Constraint: Neuronal firing exhibits extreme input degeneracy. Any subset of inputs arriving at ~100-200 out of ~104 spines can trigger an action potential; ~140 inputs yield >10300 possible effective input combinations. This degeneracy introduces ambiguity regarding the specific input combinations that

Chromosome 17 abnormalities in pediatric neuroblastic tumor with abundant neuropil and true rosettes.

Although as a group, embryonal central nervous system tumors share a common background of primitive round cells, numerous distinctive histologic features allow for further subclassification. One tumor with a unique microscopic appearance is the recently described pediatric neuroblastic tumor with abundant neuropil and true rosettes (PNTANTR). We report 2 additional cases of this unusual tumor; both arose in 4-year-old children, one a midpontine tumor and the other a large cerebral lesion. The tumors contained hypercellular sheets of undifferentiated cells, broad zones of neuropil, and scattere

Effects of Neuropilates on Functional Outcomes in Chronic Stroke: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Neuropilates is an intervention approach that was developed as a modified version of the Pilates Method to be used for neurological rehabilitation. The main objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of regular physiotherapy and occupational therapy rehabilitation in comparison to a combination of traditional rehabilitation with Neuropilates in adults with post-stroke motor disabilities. This was a rater- and analyst-blinded randomized clinical trial with a three-month intervention and a one-month follow up. Participants were randomly allocated to either the experimental group (E

Descending interneurons of the stick insect connecting brain neuropiles with the prothoracic ganglion.

Stick insects respond to visual or tactile stimuli with whole-body turning or directed reach-to-grasp movements. Such sensory-induced turning and reaching behaviour requires interneurons to convey information from sensory neuropils of the head ganglia to motor neuropils of the thoracic ganglia. To date, descending interneurons are largely unknown in stick insects. In particular, it is unclear whether the special role of the front legs in sensory-induced turning and reaching has a neuroanatomical correlate in terms of descending interneuron numbers. Here, we describe the population of descendin

A sequence of cytoskeleton changes related to the formation of neurofibrillary tangles and neuropil threads.

Frontal sections of the temporal lobe including the transentorhinal/entorhinal region, amygdala, and/or hippocampus from human adult brains are studied for cytoskeleton changes using immunostaining with the antibodies AT8 and Alz-50 and selective silver impregnation methods for neurofibrillary changes of the Alzheimer type. For the purpose of correlation, the two methods are carried out one after the other on the same section. Layer pre-alpha in the transentorhinal/entorhinal region harbours nerve cells which are among the first nerve cells in the entire brain to show the development of neurof

From embryonic fascicles to adult tracts: organization of neuropile from a developmental perspective.

We discuss ideas emerging from our studies on selective axonal fasciculation in the grasshopper embryo that have implications for the organization of the adult neuropile in insects and perhaps other animals. While one of our laboratories has been studying the embryonic development of the G neurone (in the mesothoracic segment) and its lineal homologues (in other segments), the other has been studying the morphology and physiology of this same neurone and its segmental homologues in the adult nervous system. Our embryonic studies show that the growth cone of the G neurone selectively fasciculat

Severe panencephalic Pick's disease with Alzheimer's disease-like neuropil threads and synaptophysin immunoreactivity.

We report a case of a 69-year-old woman with an 11-year history of progressive dementia, who was found at autopsy to have classic Pick's disease pathology, as well as extensive paired helical filament -- immunoreactive neurities, with few Alzheimer's disease (AD)-like neurofibrillary tangles and no senile plaques. Both Pick bodies and neuritic degeneration were extensive in the neocortex and hippocampal complex. In addition, synaptophysin immunostaining of the hippocampal complex showed a bilaminar pattern of immunoreactivity in the outer molecular layer as previously described in AD.

Spinal cord glioneuronal tumor with "rosetted" neuropil islands and meningeal dissemination: a case report.

Distinctive glioneuronal tumors arising within the cerebrum and displaying neuropil-like islands and tumor cells immunoreactive for neuronal and glial antigens have recently been described. We report a similar tumor in the cervico-thoracic region of the spinal cord in a 44-year-old woman that recurred 1 year later with dissemination to the lumbar dura and cauda equina. The tumor was composed of "rosetted" neuropil islands displaying immunoreactivity for synaptophysin, whereas the intervening tumor cells were more fibrillar and immunoreactive for GFAP. The tumor cell nuclei immediately surround

Online neuropilates exercise classes for post stroke patients: A randomised feasibility study.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke survivors are often sedentary, with known barriers to exercise including physical disabilities and transport issues. One innovative way to overcome barriers is to provide group exercise programmes via videoconferencing. Neuropilates, a programme of modified Pilates underpinned by neurological rehabilitation principles, may have benefits for stroke survivors but is under-researched. The aim of the study is to examine the feasibility and safety of an online neuropilates programme in stroke survivors. METHODS: The design was a single-blinded randomised feasibility study with

Quantification of Myelinated Nerve Fraction and Degeneration in Spinal Cord Neuropil by SHIFT MRI.

BACKGROUND: Neurodegeneration is a complex cellular process linked to prompt changes in myelin integrity and gradual neuron loss. Current imaging techniques offer estimations of myelin volumes in lesions/remyelinated areas but are limited to detect subtle injury. PURPOSE: To investigate whether measurements detected by a signal hierarchically isolated as a function of time-to-echo (SHIFT) MRI technique can determine changes in myelin integrity and fiber axolemma. STUDY TYPE: Prospective animal model. ANIMAL MODEL: Surgically demyelinated spinal cord (SC) injury model in rodents (n = 6). FI

Disseminated glioneuronal tumor with neuropil-like islands of the spinal cord: a distinctive entity.

BACKGROUND: Glioneuronal tumor with neuropil-like islands (GTNI) was recently added as a novel lesion in the most recent update of the World Health Organization classification of tumors of the central nervous system in 2007. Since this tumor's initial description, approximately 28 cases of GTNI have been published. In this report, we describe the ninth case of a spinal GTNI in the world literature. METHODS: We report a case arising in a 2-year-old female patient who presented with headaches associated with intermittent vomiting due to a tetraventricular hydrocephalus. RESULTS: After ventricu

The effect of neonatal hypoxia-ischemia on striatal cholinergic neuropil: a quantitative morphologic analysis.

Little is known about the alterations in the neurochemical anatomy of the brain in the static encephalopathies of childhood, of which one cause is hypoxia-ischemia. We and others have previously shown in neonatal rodent that experimental hypoxia-ischemia results in an increase in the density of striatal cholinergic neurons (number/mm3). There is a rostrocaudal gradient for this effect within the striatum, with as much as a 50% increase in density caudally. It has not been known what effect this injury has on the distribution of striatal cholinergic neuropil. We have therefore investigated effe

Glioneuronal tumor with neuropil-like islands in the spinal cord: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Glioneuronal tumor with neuropil-like islands (GTNI) is a distinctive neoplasm located in the cerebrum. Moreover, spinal GTNI is extremely rare. Herein, we present a case of spinal GTNI and review the related literature. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 38-year-old Chinese woman presented to our hospital with a 6-month history of neck pain and a 1-month history of dizziness. DIAGNOSES: Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large intramedullary mass spanning the length of the spinal cord from C1 to C4. Microscopic and immunohistochemical examinations of the tumor tissue revealed findings typica

Morphometric investigation of nerve cells, neuropil and senile plaques in senile dementia of the Alzheimer type.

Eight brains from patients with a mean age of 82 years showing clinical and neuropathological manifestations of senile dementia of the Alzheimer type (SDAT) and 6 control brains from individuals with a mean age of 89 years who were mentally normal or who had minimal senile impairment of memory, were selected by a rigorous elimination procedure for final evaluation from a total of 26 brains. Using an optical electronic image-analysis system, stereological measurements were made of the size and number of senile plaques, and of nerve cell area, capillary diameter, capillary length and intercapill

Clinical Features and Neuroimaging Findings of Neuropil Antibody-Positive Idiopathic Sporadic Ataxia of Unknown Etiology.

Idiopathic sporadic ataxia (ISA) is the clinical term for nonfamilial ataxia with adult-onset and a slowly progressive course. However, immune-mediated cerebellar ataxia cannot be completely excluded from ISA. The current study investigated the neuropil antibodies against cell-surface antigens and clarified the clinical features and neuroimaging findings of patients with these antibodies. Using tissue-based immunofluorescence assays (TBAs), we examined antibodies against the cerebellum in serum samples from 67 patients who met the ISA diagnostic criteria, including 30 patients with multiple sy

Reduced GABAergic neuropil and interneuron profiles in schizophrenia: Complementary analysis of disease course-related differences.

BACKGROUND: GABAergic interneuron dysfunction has been implicated in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Expression of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), a key enzyme in GABA synthesis, may also be altered. Here, we have simultaneously evaluated GAD-immunoreactive (GAD-ir) neuropil and cell profiles in schizophrenia-relevant brain regions, and analysed disease-course related differences. METHODS: GAD65/67 immunoreactivity was quantified in specific brain regions for profiles of fibres and cell bodies of interneurons by automated digital image analysis in post-mortem brains of 16 schizophren

Glioneuronal tumor with neuropil-like islands of the spinal cord with diffuse leptomeningeal neuraxis dissemination.

A 54-year-old Caucasian female presented with a 1 year history of intermittent numbness of the left leg progressing to bilateral, lower extremity sensory loss that advanced to include impaired vibration and proprioception. The subsequent thoracic spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed a heterogeneous, avidly enhancing, centrally situated spinal cord mass involving T7 through T10 in association with thick linear enhancement of the anterior and posterior cord surfaces extending both superiorly and inferiorly. Both the cervical and lumbar spine MRI demonstrated diffuse leptomeningea

Use of laser microdissection in the investigation of facial motoneuron and neuropil molecular phenotypes after peripheral axotomy.

The mechanism underlying axotomy-induced motoneuron loss is not fully understood, but appears to involve molecular changes within the injured motoneuron and the surrounding local microenvironment (neuropil). The mouse facial nucleus consists of six subnuclei which respond differentially to facial nerve transection at the stylomastoid foramen. The ventromedial (VM) subnucleus maintains virtually full facial motoneuron (FMN) survival following axotomy, whereas the ventrolateral (VL) subnucleus results in significant FMN loss with the same nerve injury. We hypothesized that distinct molecular phe

Embryonal tumor with abundant neuropil and true rosettes (ETANTR): report of a case with prominent neurocytic differentiation.

We report a case of a 2 year-old boy who initially presented with macrocephaly and severe global developmental delay. Imaging revealed a large left temporo-parietal mass that was lobulated, calcified, focally enhancing and partially cystic. A second surgery was required for tumor recurrence approximately one year later, and tissue from that resection proved to be diagnostic for an embryonal tumor with abundant neuropil and true rosettes (ETANTR). Only 12 cases of this rare pediatric embryonal tumor have been previously documented, and as of 2000, the WHO has not recognized ETANTR as a distinct
