[Neuroschistosomiasis; an unexpected finding in a Dutch woman].

A 67-year-old Dutch woman presented with neurological symptoms of several months duration. MRI scans of the brain showed intracerebral lesions. Brain biopsy revealed granulomatous inflammation and remnants of worm eggs. Eggs of Schistosoma mansoni were found in the stools and serological tests were positive for Schistosoma. From additional history taking it became clear that the patient contracted schistosomiasis when visiting Brazil several years before. She was treated with praziquantel and corticosteroids. Neuroschistosomiasis is a rare but severe complication of Schistosoma infection. This

Immune response and pathogenesis of neuroschistosomiasis mansoni.

The involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) by schistosomes may or may not determine clinical manifestations. When symptomatic, neuroschistosomiasis (NS) is one of the most severe presentations of schistosome infection. Considering the symptomatic form, Schistosoma mansoni causes almost always spinal cord disease. Cerebral and spinal cord disorders in S. mansoni infections are inflammatory conditions of the CNS that cause mild-moderate impairment of the blood-brain barrier and intrathecal synthesis of antibodies against schistosomal antigens. Little is known about the pathogenesis of N

Neuroschistosomiasis presenting as recurrent seizures: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral pseudotumoral schistosomiasis is an uncommon and underreported condition, posing significant diagnostic challenges due to its ability to mimic other neurological conditions, especially in patients presenting with persistent seizures and imaging findings indicative of an infectious etiology. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 16-year-old male who presented with persistent headaches and recurrent seizures despite adherence to antiseizure medications. Neuroimaging findings suggested an infectious process but were inconclusive in differentiating between a tuberculoma a

Primary Spinal Glioblastoma Mimicking Neuroschistosomiasis: A Case Report.

Primary glioblastoma of the spinal cord (sGB) is a rare and challenging diagnosis. In the diagnostic algorithm, reversible causes should be considered while the diagnosis of sGB is under evaluation. We present a case of cervical sGB mimicking neuroschistosomiasis. A 21-year-old Somali man presented with neck pain, sensory disturbances, and spastic tetraplegia. Cervical spine magnetic resonance imaging with contrast showed a heterogeneously enhancing intramedullary mass spanning from the level of the C1 to T3 vertebrae. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed a lymphocytic predominance and elevated

Acute neuroschistosomiasis: two cases associated with cerebral vasculitis.

Encephalitis and focal neurologic deficits can occur during the acute phase of schistosomiasis. We report two cases in which cerebral imaging showed cerebral vasculitis located in arterial junctional territories. These neurologic complications may be caused by eosinophil-mediated toxicity. Immediate treatment should consist of corticosteroids rather than specific antischistosomal drugs, which may aggravate the disorders.

Neuroschistosomiasis Mimicking Spinal Tuberculosis: A Case Report.

Schistosomiasis is a chronic parasitic disease acquired through freshwater exposure, in which cercariae penetrate the skin and mature into adult worms. Disease manifestations largely result from granulomatous inflammation and fibrosis surrounding retained eggs. A 65-year-old widow presented with six months of lower back pain, weight loss, paraplegia (power 1/5), sphincter dysfunction, a T12 sensory level, and T9-T10 gibbus. She had received empirical antitubercular therapy for two months without improvement. Thoracolumbar MRI demonstrated vertebral and disc collapse at T10-T11 and L1-L2, with

Neuroschistosomiasis: An Unusual Intracranial Space Occupying Lesion.

BACKGROUND: Neuroschistosomiasis is an uncommonly reported disease. CASE CHARACTERISTICS: An adolescent Indian boy residing in Kenya presented with headache, visual symptoms and seizures, with MRI showing space-occupying lesions in the occipital lobe and cerebellum. OBSERVATION: Brain biopsy was diagnostic of neuro-schistosomiasis; complete recovery was seen with praziquantel and corticosteroid therapy. MESSAGE: This case highlights the importance of considering epidemiology in differential diagnosis and establishing definitive diagnosis even if it is by invasive methods.

Medullary neuroschistosomiasis in adolescence: case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Medullary neuroschistosomiasis is a severe complication of gastrointestinal infection by Schistosoma. There are several endemic areas, wherein the only causative species present is Schistosoma mansoni, which is responsible for the clinical manifestations of all cases in those areas. METHODS: We report the case of a 13-year-old female with lumbar pain and progressive lower limb weakness, with a delayed diagnosis of medullary involvement by the parasite. We also reviewed the literature on the disease. CONCLUSIONS: Although it is related to the less severe forms of schistosomiasis

A case report of conus intramedullary mansoni neuroschistosomiasis.

BACKGROUND: Conus schistosomiasis is an extremely rare entity in which patients present with a wide range of neurological symptoms such as low back pain, paresthesia, fever, myalgia, paraparesis, and paraplegia. This neglected tropical parasitic disease causes significant neurological morbidity. The migration of parasitic worms and their eggs into the central nervous system can lead to profound and life-altering disabilities. Early, accurate diagnosis, and treatment can lead to the complete resolution of symptoms. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 5-year-old boy from South Sudan presented with complaints o

Medullary neuroschistosomiasis in a pediatric patient: a case report.

A pediatric patient with neurological deficit was examined using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI]. The images revealed abnormal signal intensity and enhancement of the spinal cord, indicating myelopathy. Identifying the cause of the myelopathy required a differential diagnosis. Images from MRI included a pre-contrast T1 weighted sagittal sequence, which revealed expansion of the distal lumbar spinal cord and conus medullaris from T10-L1. The T2 weighted sagittal sequence revealed patchy areas of hyperintense signal. We did not notice any chronic hemorrhagic products or cysts. Within the field

Pediatric Neuroschistosomiasis: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Neuroschistosomiasis is a rare but severe manifestation of Schistosoma infection. Diagnosis is challenging and surgical biopsy is often required to confirm diagnosis and exclude malignancy. We present a pediatric case of presumed pseudotumoral cerebral schistosomiasis secondary to Schistosoma mansoni with an excellent therapeutic response to empirical praziquantel and corticosteroid treatment.

Characterisation of ocular involvement in an experimental model of neuroschistosomiasis mansoni.

The Global Burden of Disease Study 2010 listed schistosomiasis among the leading 100 causes of death in Brazil, responsible for 3.6% of the estimated total of deaths globally. Eye and adnexa are very rarely affected by schistosomiasis mansoni, with limited documentation of ocular pathology in this setting. This short communication reports ocular histolopathological findings in a murine model of neuroschistosomiasis mansoni. Lesions were found in the bulbar conjunctiva, lacrimal gland, choroid and corneoscleral limbus.

Spinal neuroschistosomiasis caused by Schistoma mansoni: cases reported in two brothers.

BACKGROUND: Spinal neuroschistosomiasis (SN) is one of the most severe clinical presentations of schistosomiasis infection and an ectopic form of the disease caused by any species of Schistosoma. In Brazil, all cases of this clinical manifestation are related to Schistosoma mansoni, the only species present in the country. Although many cases have been reported in various endemic areas in Brazil, this is the first time in the literature that SN is described in two brothers. CASE PRESENTATION: Two cases of SN were accidentally diagnosed during an epidemiological survey in an urban area endemic
