Catatonia and Mutism: Neurotic, Psychotic, or Organic Disorder?

Background. Catatonia is caused by a variety of psychiatric and organic conditions. The onset, clinical profile, and response to treatment may vary depending on the underlying cause. Catatonia is more likely to be associated with neurotic and psychotic disorders, but some psychiatric symptoms are key components in the clinical presentation of other medical conditions. Case Report. We report the case of a woman who started showing paroxysmal recurrent episodes since the age of 57 years, characterized by surrounding disconnection, disorientation, and muscle spasm (myoclonus), followed by a posti

[Prevention of secondary neurotic and other mental disorders in traumatic epilepsy].

A study was made of the effect of risk factors and the clinical picture of the prodromal period in 184 patients with traumatic epilepsy, of the efficacy of nootropic and long-acting psychotropic drugs in combined treatment. The risk factors were brain contusions, open cranial injuries, particularly in frontotemporal areas, comatose states after injury lasting over 6 hours, successive fits in the acute period of injury, episodic disorders of dull consciousness. Administration of nootropic and long-acting drugs brought about a reduction of the cerebral asthenic symptomatology and stabilization o

Predictive validity of neurotic disorders: a 50-year follow-up study.

INTRODUCTION: In 1965, Erling Jacobsen (1919-1988) defended his doctoral thesis on neurosis in which he tested the psychoanalytic theory of eridophobia as an internalising hostility factor with a specific causality for anxiety neurosis. He found no marked difference between anxiety neurosis and obsessive-compulsive neurosis, which, however, both differed from hysterical neurosis. The aim of this follow-up study was to evaluate to which extent anxiety neurosis and obsessive-compulsive neurosis when compared with hysterical neurosis co-existed with depression, both at the level of diagnostic beh

[Symptom check-lists in the diagnosis and epidemiology of neurotic disorders].

Epidemiological studies related to the occurrence of neurotic disorders commonly use symptom check-lists. The results of such studies depend on, amongst others, the construction of the questionnaire and especially on the specification of the value of the questionnaire (GSI) which is determined as the boundary between the "psychophysiological" or organic symptoms and neurotic symptoms. A control study was carried out on the norms of two symptom checklists which have been used for many years in Poland: SCL-"S" (73 symptoms), most often diagnosed in neurotic patients, at the time of constructing

[Neurotic disorders in epilepsy and their treatment by technics of psychotherapy and reflexotherapy].

The paper reports on observations of the onset and development of neurotic states in patients (n = 51) suffering from various forms of epilepsy at different stages of the disease. The clinical features of the principal types of neuroses such as neurasthenia, hysteria or neurosis of obsessive states proceeding in the presence of epilepsy are considered and clinical examples are adduced. Recommendations are given on the treatment of such patients using psychotherapy (including hypnotherapy) and acupuncture combined with basic anticonvulsion treatment. [Disordered partner relations in neurotic diseases and treatment with psychotherapy].

Couples with neurotic partner problems are characterized by considerable psychic and/or psycho-somatic complaints. Men usually judge the relationships with their spouses more satisfactory than women do. Women suffer more from conflicts in partner-relationships than men do responding to such conflicts with psychic and/or psycho-somatic complaints. Men are more disturbed by a conflict mobilizing therapy than women are. The strongest decrease of men's psychic symptoms can be found in the year after their therapy. Women's defence against psychic problems is less strong than men's. Decrease of wome

The outcome of neurotic disorders after out-patient and day hospital care.

New psychiatric out-patients with depressive, phobic, and anxiety neurosis were randomly allocated to out-patient care or to one of two types of day hospital treatment, one specialising in psychotherapy and the other offering all forms of day care. Of 106 patients who entered the study, 78 had assessments of psychiatric symptomatology and social adjustment both before treatment and after 4, 8 and 24 months. There was no significant difference in outcome between depressive, phobic, and anxiety neurosis, and no overall difference in response to treatment between the three types of care. Suicidal

[Reactive neurotic disorders during the clinical course of slowly-progressing hypochondriac schizophrenia].

As a result of structural-dynamic psychopathological analysis of mental states in 42 patients with slow-progressive schizophrenia in which the hypochondriac signs prevaled, the secondary reactive personality neurotic disorders were revealed. These were developed as a response to pronounced psychic traumatizing impact of the schizophrenic neurose-like symptoms: vital fear of death, cranial and cardiac senestoalgias, somato-autonomic disorders in hypochondric raptus and raptoid states.

Manipulation tactics of patients with neurotic disorders in everyday life and during therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Vitiligo is a chronic skin condition characterised by progressive depigmentation. The visibility of skin lesions, their location, and perceived social stigma can exacerbate emotional stress and reduce life satisfaction. For this reason, the condition can significantly affect mental well-being and social functioning. AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between life satisfaction in individuals with vitiligo and the level of social support and degree of acceptance of illness. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 215 individuals diagnosed with vitiligo. The

[Sexual traumatic events and neurotic disorders picture--sexuality-related and sexuality-unrelated symptoms].

INTRODUCTION: There is an ample evidence of the impact of severe traumatic events, such as sexual abuse in childhood, on the formation of disorders--especially the non-psychotic ones: sexual, neurotic and personality. So far, an increase of the risk with the accumulation of traumatic factors has been indicated, but less attention has been paid to adverse events such as lack of sexual education, negative attitudes of the caregivers towards sexuality, etc. AIM: Assessment of the risk of such adverse events in childhood and adolescence, concerning the symptoms from the area of sexuality as well

Prediction of outcome in neurotic disorder: a 5-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: There have been no previous studies of the outcome of different neurotic disorders in which a prospective group with original randomization to treatment have been followed up over a long period. Such studies are important in identifying the factors associated with good and poor outcome. METHODS: A 5-year follow-up assessment was made of a cohort of 210 psychiatric out-patients seen in general practice psychiatric clinics with a DSM-III diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder (71), panic disorder (74) or dysthymic disorder (65) and randomized to drug treatment, cognitive and beha

Burden on key relatives of patients with schizophrenia vs neurotic disorders: a pilot study.

The burden perceived by the key relatives of 27 schizophrenics and 19 patients with neurotic disorders, both with at least a minimal degree of personal/social disability and a current exacerbation of symptoms, was assessed by a self-administered questionnaire. Only modest quantitative and qualitative differences between the two samples of key relatives were found. The burden perceived by the relatives of schizophrenics was more closely related to the patients' personal/social disability than that reported by the relatives of neurotic patients. The psychopathological features of schizophrenic p
