Unna's and Miescher's nevi: two different types of intradermal nevus: hypothesis concerning their histogenesis.

In 1991, we tentatively introduced the classification of Ackerman and Magana-García for acquired melanocytic nevi in our laboratory. We soon realized that every acquired intradermal melanocytic nevus might be easily classified into either Unna's or Miescher's patterns and that this classification had both clinical implications and significant histological differences. The decisive discriminative feature between Unna's and Miescher's nevi is that Unna's nevus is an almost purely adventitial lesion confined to expanded papillary dermis and, many times, to the perifollicular dermis too. In Miesch

Exploring the potential of intradermal platelet-rich plasma in treating acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macule (Hori's nevus): A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Hori's nevus is a common and challenging dermatological condition, often complicated by post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation following treatment. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of hyperpigmentation disorders such as melasma and periorbital darkening. Given the benefits and minimally invasive nature of PRP treatments, exploring its application in managing Hori's nevus through further investigation is worthwhile. AIMS: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of intradermal PRP therapy for the treatment of Hori's nevus. METHODS: Ten female pati

Acquired (idiopathic) intradermal nevus with junctional activity presenting as clitoromegaly in a child: report of a case.

Clitoromegaly (macroclitoris) can either be congenital or acquired. Intradermal nevus presenting as clitoromegaly in a child is extremely rare. Extensive Medline search has failed to reveal any published article on this. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first patient with this presentation in a 6-year-old child.

A rare cutis verticis gyrata secondary to cerebriform intradermal nevus: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Cutis verticis gyrate (CVG) is a rare morphologic syndrome that presents with hypertrophy and folding of the scalp. CVG can be classified into three forms: primary essential, primary non-essential, and secondary. Cerebriform intradermal nevus (CIN) is a rare cause of secondary CVG. We are here to report a rare case of CVG with an underlying CIN and discuss the clinical course, treatment options, and critical screening guidelines for these patients. CASE PRESENTATION: A 25 year-old male patient presented with a chief complaint of generalized hair loss in the scalp parietaloccipital

Spastic quadriplegia following intradermal use of hydrogen peroxide in the tardive curettage procedure for the treatment of a giant congenital nevus.

The possible transformation of a giant congenital melanocytic nevi (GCMN) in malignant melanoma estimated from 0.05% to 40% depend on the size of the lesions. Many are the surgical procedures proposed, including: full or partial-thickness excisions, dermabrasion, curettage in the first weeks of life and laser treatment. The curettage technique has been proposed in the literature for the treatment of GCMN in the first few weeks of life and defined as a relatively atraumatic surgery procedure without general complications. The authors report the first case in the literature of embolization due t

Pigmented Epithelioid Melanocytoma (PEM)/Animal Type Melanoma (ATM): Quest for an Origin. Report of One Unusual Case Indicating Follicular Origin and Another Arising in an Intradermal Nevus.

Pigmented epithelioid melanocytoma (PEM) is a tumor encompassing epithelioid blue nevus of Carney complex (EBN of CNC) and was previously termed animal-type melanoma. Histologically PEMs are heavily pigmented spindled and epithelioid dermal melanocytic tumors with infiltrative borders, however, their origin remains unclear. Stem cells for the epidermis and hair follicle are located in the bulge area of the hair follicle with the potential to differentiate into multiple lineages. Multiple cutaneous carcinomas, including follicular cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (FSCC), are thought to arise f

Successful treatment of eyebrow intradermal nevi by shearing combined with electrocautery and curettage: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: An intradermal nevus is a common skin tumour, and the classical method of removal has a risk of recurrence and scarring. It is a challenge for dermatologists to treat eyebrow intradermal nevi quickly and efficiently. This study focused on investigating the efficacy and safety of shearing combined with electrocautery and curettage in the treatment of eyebrow intradermal nevi. CASE SUMMARY: We describe two adult patients with eyebrow intradermal nevi treated by shearing combined with electrocautery and curettage. Both patients were followed up regularly after surgery. At follow-up,

Clinicopathological Analysis of Acquired Melanocytic Nevi and a Preliminary Study on the Possible Origin of Nevus Cells.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of acquired melanocytic nevi (AMN) is still unclear, and the origin of nevus cells has not been clarified. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical features and pathological types of AMN and identify the possible origin of nevus cells. METHODS: A retrospective study of 2929 cases of AMN was conducted, and 96 specimens of intradermal and junctional nevi were selected. Immunohistochemical assays were performed to detect the expression of basement membrane component receptor DDR-1 and the molecular markers on epidermal melanocytes, dermal stem cells (DSCs), and hair folli

A 64-Year-Old Woman With Molluscum Contagiosum Arising in a Melanocytic Nevus: A Case Report of an Unusual Coexistence.

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) virus is a poxvirus that infects epidermal keratinocytes producing cutaneous nodules with characteristic intracytoplasmic inclusions. Intradermal nevus is a benign lesion that typically presents as clusters of melanocytes within the dermal layer of skin. Although both MC and melanocytic nevus are common lesions, MC arising within a melanocytic nevus is a rare event with only a few cases published in the literature. Herein, we report the case of a 64-year-old immunocompetent woman with an MC emerging within an intradermal nevus of the left nasolabial fold. In addition

Giant Congenital Blue Nevus Presenting as Cutis Verticis Gyrata: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

OBJECTIVES: Cerebriform intradermal nevus and giant congenital blue nevi are rarely reported melanocytic nevi with clinical and histopathologic similarities. Both are known to produce cutis verticis gyrata. We report a significantly large occipital scalp congenital blue nevus with secondary cutis verticis gyrata. The aim of this report is to increase clinical awareness of this entity, highlight histopathologic and mutational features of cerebriform intradermal nevi and giant congenital blue nevi, and stress the importance of clinicopathologic correlation for diagnosis. METHODS: Case report an

Divided or kissing nevus of the penis.

The divided or kissing nevus is an unusual congenital melanocytic nevus. By definition, these nevi appear on skin that separates during embryological development. These lesions have been reported on the eyelids, fingers, and rarely the penis. We describe an 18 year old uncircumcised male who presented with an asymptomatic darkly pigmented patch on the glans penis. He reported that the lesion had appeared recently and was enlarging. Physical examination revealed a second symmetric lesion on the adjacent foreskin. Punch biopsy of the lesion on the glans penis showed abundant intradermal melanocy

Immunohistochemical studies of selected skin diseases and tumors using monoclonal antibodies to neurofilament and myelin proteins.

Several skin diseases and tumors were immunohistochemically studied with the use of monoclonal antibodies against myelin proteins and neurofilament proteins. In prurigo nodularis, many nerve fibers were found embedded in dense inflammatory cell infiltration. Abnormal innervation was observed in piloleiomyoma. The axons were demonstrated within the cytoplasm of granular cells of granular cell schwannoma. In neurofibroma, tumor cells had myelin proteins in their cytoplasms. Many cells and fibers that contained myelin proteins were demonstrated in nevus cell nevus, especially in compound nevus an

Osteonevus of Nanta: a case report in a combined melanocytic nevus.

Secondary osteoma cutis is a phenomenon that may occur in several conditions. When it occurs in a melanocytic nevus it is named osteonevus of Nanta, an event considered uncommon and characterized by the presence of bone formation adjacent or interposed with melanocytic cells. There are reports of its occurrence in various melanocytic lesions, being more frequently associated with intradermal nevus. We report a case of osteonevus of Nanta in combined nevus, possibly the first description of this association.

Lipedematous Scalp with Varied Presentations: A Case Series of Four Patients.

Lipedematous scalp (LS) is a rare cutaneous disorder of unknown etiology, characterized by significant thickening of subcutaneous tissue which results in a thick, boggy, scalp swelling. To the best of our knowledge, less than 50 cases are reported till date. Hereby, we present a total of four cases of LS, that is, two cases of LS and two cases of unusual associations of LS with alopecia areata and intradermal nevus. LS with intradermal nevus and alopecia areata are the first of its kind, not yet reported till date.So far, only two cases of LS had been reported from Indian population. Hence, ou

A case of dysplastic nevus of the external auditory canal presenting with conductive hearing loss.

A nevus which is a benign melanocytic neoplasm rarely occurs within the external auditory canal (EAC). A dysplastic nevus presents atypical features both clinically and histologically, and is important as a potential precursor for melanoma. We present a case of a 33-year-old female patient with a dysplastic nevus in her EAC. Physical examination revealed a protruding mass arising from the posterior wall of the left cartilaginous EAC. The mass showed clinically characteristic findings of a melanocytic nevus. The patient underwent excisional biopsy via a transcanal approach under local anesthesi

Dynamic evolution of a scalp congenital melanocytic nevus with poliosis and cutis verticis gyrata.

Cutis verticis gyrata (CVG), characterized by cerebriform overgrowth of the scalp, is rarely observed in congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN). We describe a 13-year-old male with autism and a large CMN of the scalp with numerous satellite nevi whose scalp nevus exhibited evolution with poliosis and CVG. Given the potential association of CVG (independent of CMN) with seizures, neuropsychiatric, and ophthalmologic disorders, and nevus-associated CVG (cerebriform intradermal nevus) with melanoma, multidisciplinary evaluation of CMN patients with CVG is important to guide management and treatment.

Poliosis overlying a nevus with blue nevus features.

Poliosis is a localized patch of gray or white hair. Because it can be seen with a variety of disorders and drugs, a full history and exam is indicated. Additionally, it can be associated with underlying benign and malignant tumors, necessitating histological identification. We review the lesions that are reported with poliosis. In addition, we will report a case of poliosis overlying an intradermal nevus with congenital as well as blue nevus features. To the best of our knowledge, blue nevus features associated with poliosis have not been previously described.

Melanoma associated with a dysplastic nevus: report of two cases with unusual sebocyte-like melanocytes in the nevus part of the lesion.

We present two cases of melanoma arising in a dysplastic nevus that contained intradermal sebocyte-like melanocytes characterized by a scalloped dark-staining nucleus surrounded by the pale multivacuolated cytoplasm imitating sebaceous differentiation. Both patients were women, aged 49 and 55 years. Location included the back and temporal area. Microscopically, both cases had the following features in common: the melanoma in situ, which was of the superficially spreading type, was associated with a dysplastic compound nevus, in which the sebocyte-like cells were identified in the intradermal n
