Lichen Planopilaris Developing at the Margins of a Sebaceous Nevus of Jadassohn: Co-existence or Etiologic Association?

Sebaceous nevus (SN), is a skin hamartoma, combining a variety of epidermal, follicular, sebaceous, and apocrine abnormalities. Although usually present at birth, it may become apparent later in life appearing as a yellowish-brown, verrucous plaque with alopecia. SN is implicated with secondary tumors arising on the hairless plaque during the adulthood. Lichen planopilaris is a common, primary lymphocytic scarring alopecia of unknown etiology, characterized by lichenoid/interface perifollicular lymphocytic infiltrate occurring at the level of the infundibulum and the isthmus. Here, we present

Molluscum contagiosum mimicking sebaceous nevus of Jadassohn, ecthyma and giant condylomata acuminata in HIV-infected patients.

We report on three HIV-infected homosexual male patients with atypical manifestations of mollusca contagiosa (MC). Their clinical presentation mimicked sebaceous nevus of Jadassohn, ecthyma and giant condylomata acuminata. HIV-infected patients feature MC with atypical morphology in about two thirds of the cases. The atypical aspects of MC concern the localization, morphology, growth pattern and size of the lesions. MC is a late manifestation of HIV infection and mirrors marked cellular immune deficiency. We conclude that in HIV-infected patients all tumorous lesions should be biopsied because

Primary Cutaneous Apocrine Carcinoma and Basal Cell Carcinoma Arising in a Nevus Sebaceous of Jadassohn: Case Report and Literature Review.

Nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn (NSJ) is a congenital organoid hamartoma composed of epidermal, follicular, sebaceous, and apocrine elements that may give rise to secondary neoplasms later in life. Although most tumors arising in NSJ are benign adnexal proliferations, malignant neoplasms may occasionally develop. We report a case of a 56-year-old female patient with a long-standing lesion on the parietal scalp. Histopathologic examination revealed NSJ associated with 2 distinct malignant neoplasms: primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma and superficial basal cell carcinoma. The diagnosis of apocrin

Rare desmoplastic trichilemmoma associated with sebaceous nevus.

Nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn is a congenital hamartoma that usually affects the scalp and face. Several benign or malignant neoplasias may develop in the lesion and the most common are trichoblastoma, syringocystadenoma papilliferum, and basal cell carcinoma. Trichilemmoma is a benign solid tumor originating from external sheath cells of pilosebaceous follicles. When it is characterized by a central zone of desmoplasia, it is called desmoplastic trichilemmoma. We report a case of a 58-year-old patient who developed a tumor in a sebaceous nevus. We performed a total excision of the lesion. Hist

Ocular malformation in association with ipsilateral facial nevus of Jadassohn.

A 13-year-old boy had ocular malformations and a sebaceous nevus of Jadassohn. The salient features included left frontoparietal alopecia, a pigmented flat nevus anterior to the left tragus, and a left-sided fleshy corneoscleral limbal mass. Histopathologic analysis showed a complex choristoma of lacrimal tissue and cartilage, together with intrascleral cartilage and bone. Deformity of the left sphenoid bone, dilatation of the left lateral ventricle, and localized atrophy of the left cerebral hemisphere were evident, but the patient had no history of seizures, no neurologic deficit, and normal

Linear nevus sebaceous syndrome.

The linear nevus sebaceous syndrome is a rare disorder first described in 1962 in two cases by Feuerstein and Mims. As originally described, it consisted of the triad of the characteristic midline facial linear nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn, seizures, and mental retardation. The authors have followed a patient with this syndrome from birth to age 8 and although he does demonstrate several neurologic and ocular abnormalities, he enjoys normal intelligence and has never suffered seizures. The features of this syndrome and several new ocular findings demonstrated in this case are described. Based

Nevus sebaceous of the eyelid: Unique presentation and literature review.

Nevus sebaceous has been described since 1895 by Jadassohn. It has been described as unctuous yellow nodules with granular-pitted surfaces as a hypertrophic sebaceous gland. It usually appears on the face, scalp, and neck. It has been stated to involve three stages. (1) Being small and yellow in nature and hairless. (2) Enlargement of the glandular part. (3) Malignant transformation. There are a few cases of nevus sebaceous involving the eyelid margin that have been reported in the English literature. We here report a case report of a nevus sebaceous in a child involving the upper and lower li

Basal cell carcinoma within nevus sebaceous of the trunk.

We report the first case of an 82-year-old woman with five basal cell carcinomas within a large nevus sebaceous of the trunk. Nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn is a congenital cutaneous hamartoma affecting 0.3% of newborns. Clinical diagnosis is based on its distinctive hairless, orange-brown appearance. Up to 51% of nevus sebaceous may exhibit secondary neoplasia, and basal cell carcinoma is thought to occur in approximately 1% of lesions. Our patient presented with an asymptomatic, pigmented verrucous plaque on the upper right back that had been present since birth. Histopathology of concerning p

Oral findings in a patient with Sebaceous Nevi - A Case Report.

The presentation herewith as scripted is to describe a case with Nevus sebaceous with oral manifestations. Nevus Sebaceous or Jadassohn's nevus is an epidermal nevus with predominant sebaceous glands seen histologically. Reports of oral involvement have been few ranging from papillomatous growths of the tongue, gingiva, palate to dental abnormalities such as anodontia and dysodontia. The present case describes a nevus sebaceous present on the right half of the face and neck, showing intraoral papillomatous growth on the lateral part of the tongue on the right side. The patient was healthy and

Syringocystadenoma papilliferum with sebaceous differentiation in an intradermal tubular apocrine component. Report of a case.

Syringocystadenoma papilliferum is a benign tumor most commonly located on the scalp or face, and it often arises within a nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn. We describe a 61-year-old man with syringocystadenoma papilliferum developing within a nevus sebaceus with sebaceous differentiation in an intradermal tubular apocrine component of the syringocystadenoma papilliferum. Although some adnexal neoplasms that develop in association with a nevus sebaceus may exhibit conjoint sebaceous, follicular, or apocrine differentiation, reflecting close embryological relations of the folliculosebaceous-apocrine

Development of seven secondary neoplasms in a nevus sebaceous: a case report and literature review.

Nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn is a congenital cutaneous hamartoma with epidermal, sebaceous, follicular, and apocrine structures that usually appears at birth or in early childhood. It has the potential to generate a variety of secondary neoplasms of different lineages, and the risk increases with patient age. Although multiple neoplasms may occasionally arise within the same lesion, the coexistence of more than five secondary tumors is extremely rare. Here we report a case of seven secondary tumors including syringocystadenoma papilliferum, desmoplastic trichilemmoma, sebaceoma, trichoblastoma

Trichoblastoma is the most common neoplasm developed in nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn: a clinicopathologic study of a series of 155 cases.

Nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn is a hamartoma that combines epidermal, follicular, sebaceous, and apocrine gland abnormalities. Classically, several types of cutaneous neoplasms have been associated with this hamartoma, with basal cell carcinoma being the most frequently described malignancy. We studied a series of 155 examples of nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn with clinicopathologic correlation. Several histopathologic changes related to the age of the patients were found. In our series, we could not identify any cases of authentic basal cell carcinoma. In contrast, several examples of primitive fo

Identification of a recurrent mosaic KRAS variant in brain tissue from an individual with nevus sebaceous syndrome.

Nevus sebaceous syndrome (NSS) is a rare, multisystem neurocutaneous disorder, characterized by a congenital nevus, and may include brain malformations such as hemimegalencephaly or focal cortical dysplasia, ocular, and skeletal features. It has been associated with several eponyms including Schimmelpenning and Jadassohn. The isolated skin lesion, nevus sebaceous, is associated with postzygotic variants in HRAS or KRAS in all individuals studied. The RAS proteins encode a family of GTPases that form part of the RAS/MAPK signaling pathway, which is critical for cell cycle regulation and differe

Case Report: Leathery black plaque on the temple and scalp.

BACKGROUND: Epidermal nevus sebaceous, commonly known as the nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn, is a congenital sebaceous hamartoma. It typically manifests as a single yellowish plaque across the head and neck and is composed of sebaceous glands. It commonly occurs during infancy and grows during puberty. Usually, it follows a benign course; however, in a few cases, it can be malignant. This is the case of a 13-year-old child with verrucous plaques on the temple and scalp. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 13-year-old boy with a steadily developing hyperpigmented verrucous plaque on the scalp a

Gustav Schimmelpenning and the syndrome bearing his name.

Gustav Schimmelpenning was born in 1928 in Oldenburg (Germany). From 1971 until 1994 he was head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Kiel. In 1957, while training in neurology and psychiatry, he comprehensively described a case of sebaceous nevus involving the head, with ipsilateral ocular lesions including coloboma of the upper lid, increased density of cranial bones, epileptic seizures and mental retardation. He concluded that this combination of anomalies represented a new 'phacomatosis'. Subsequently this phenotype was reported by other authors under many different names,

Phenotype/genotype correlations in epidermal nevus syndrome as a neurocristopathy.

Epidermal nevus syndrome (ENS) is a term that encompasses several phenotypes defined by the association of an epidermal nevus with one or more congenital systemic anomalies, mainly ocular, osseous and cerebral. The two most frequent, keratinocytic nevus syndrome and linear sebaceous nevus syndrome, also correspond to the neurological phenotypes. They both exhibit overlapping and distinctive features but same etiology: post-zygotic mosaic mutations in RAS genes. Their pathogenesis is due to defective neural crest, further confirming that they are the same basic entity contradicting the concept
