Bilateral nevus of Ota series treated with picosecond laser.

BACKGROUND: Nevus of Ota (NO) "oculodermal melanocytosis" is prevalent in Asians. Bilateral nevus of Ota (BNO) is a rare condition and comprises 5% of the cases seen. Picosecond laser (PS) is useful in treating various cutaneous benign pigmentary disorders including NO. We analyzed the clinical data on BNO in Vietnamese patients and evaluated the efficacy of treatment of the 1064 nm Nd:YAG picosecond laser (PSNY). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine Vietnamese patients (ages 2-67 years, mean 23.36 ± 17.5) with BNO received at least 3 treatment sessions with 1064-nm PSNY (4-5 mm spot size; 1.5-2

Melanoma in the setting of nevus of Ota: a review for dermatologists.

Nevus of Ota, also known as oculodermal melanocytosis or nevus fuscoceruleus ophthalmomaxillaris, is a benign dermal melanocytic nevus that most commonly affects Asian women. While the lesion is largely a cosmetic concern, it has the potential to undergo malignant transformation to melanoma. Patients with nevus of Ota often present to a dermatologist at some point for examination or removal with laser therapy. Therefore, it is important for dermatologists to understand the cutaneous and extracutaneous risks these lesions carry and how they may present to further optimize management and appropr

Treatment of nevus of Ota by Q-switched ruby laser.

BACKGROUND: There are few reports on therapy for nevus of Ota. Moreover, traditional treatments are largely palliative or risk permanent pigmentary changes and/or scarring. OBJECTIVE: The efficacy of the Q-switched ruby laser (694 nm, 40 nsec) as a therapy for nevus of Ota was investigated. METHODS: Nine nevi or portions thereof were irradiated up to six times with 4.5 and/or 7.5 J/cm2 at a mean exposure interval of 3 weeks. Sequential skin biopsy specimens were processed for light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy. RESULTS: Cosmetic improvement occurred at both dose

Treatment of nevus of Ota with the Q-switched ruby laser.

BACKGROUND: Nevus of Ota is a benign bluish or gray-brown lesion of the eye and the surrounding skin that has been reported to occur in about 1 in 200 people in Japan. Prior treatments have either been ineffective or caused scarring. The Q-switched ruby laser can produce very short high-energy pulses and can selectively target cells that contain pigment, such as dermal melanocytes. METHODS: We treated the skin lesions of 114 patients (25 male and 89 female) with nevi of Ota with a Q-switched ruby laser set to deliver pulses of 6 J per square centimeter of body-surface area at a wavelength of

Congenital halo nevus associated with vitiligo aggravated by lasers targeting nevus of Ota: a case report.

An 11-year-old Chinese girl had bluish-gray hyperpigmented patches combined with two dark brown papules on her left face since birth, and she developed a hypopigmented patch within the bluish-gray patches after sun exposure at the age of eight. Her previous medical history suggested that the hypopigmented patch was sensitive to the treatment of tacrolimus ointment cream and 308-nm excimer laser, while the hyperpigmented patches were insensitive to the previous initial laser treatment. Based on the clinical manifestations and a positive result of Wood's lamp examination, she was diagnosed with

Unilateral open-angle glaucoma associated with the ipsilateral nevus of ota.

The nevus of Ota also known as "congenital melanosis bulbi" and "oculodermal melanocytosis" is a blue-gray hyperpigmentation that occurs on the face and eyes. The sclera is involved in two-thirds of cases (causing an increased risk of glaucoma). Women are nearly five times more likely to be affected than men. It is rare among Caucasian people. The nevus of Ota is congenital or acquired. Most cases of the nevus of Ota are unilateral (90%), although pigmentation is present bilaterally in 5%-10%. Ocular abnormalities included pigmentation of the sclera, cornea, retina, and optic disc and cavernou

Intracranial meningeal melanocytoma associated with ipsilateral nevus of Ota. Case report.

In this report, the authors review the case of a man with a neurocutaneous syndrome. He presented with an intracerebral melanocytoma associated with a blue nevus of the scalp; its location and its appearance during childhood supported the diagnosis of a nevus of Ota. Meningeal melanocytomas are increasingly being diagnosed, but remain rare. Primary meningeal malignant melanoma is the first differential diagnosis to eliminate. Despite their common embryonic origin. the association of a melanocytoma with a nevus of Ota is rare. A nevus of Ota exhibits the same melanocytic proliferation and affec

Fatal GNAQ-mutated CNS melanoma in an adolescent with nevus of Ota.

Nevus of Ota is an uncommon benign mesodermal melanosis that involves the first and second divisions of the trigeminal nerve. Primary non-cutaneous melanoma often involves distinct genetic mutations compared to cutaneous melanoma. In primary central nervous system (CNS) melanomas associated with nevus of Ota, somatic mutations most commonly occur at the Q209 and R183 residues of GNAQ and likely induce tumorigenesis through upregulation of the MAP kinase pathway. This case underscores the importance of elucidating neurologic symptoms early in patients with nevus of Ota, as a delayed presentatio

Meningeal melanocytoma of Meckel's cave associated with ipsilateral Ota's nevus.

A case of meningeal melanocytoma of the left Meckel's cave associated with ipsilateral Ota's nevus in a 43-year-old woman, was studied by light and electron microscopy. The cells of the tumor were characterized by the presence of dendritic cytoplasmic processes, melanosomes and premelanosomes; hence, they were deemed as neoplastic melanocytes. Moreover, the tumor was lacking in histologic and ultrastructural features of pigmented meningioma, melanotic Schwannoma and primary meningeal melanoma. The prolonged clinical course was different from primary and metastatic malignant melanomas of the me

Meningeal Melanocytoma Associated with Nevus of Ota: Analysis of Twelve Reported Cases.

BACKGROUND: Primary melanocytic neoplasms (PMNs) are rare neoplasms, especially within the central nervous system. Meningeal melanocytomas, a subtype of PMN, are even rarer. Nevus of Ota results from the incomplete migration of melanocytes from the neural crest. Synchronous nevus of Ota and meningeal melanocytoma are infrequently encountered in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and elucidate 12 cases of synchronous meningeal melanocytoma and nevus of Ota, thereby improving the understanding of the relationship between these 2 diseases. METHODS: We reviewed cases and searched the Engl
